Book Economic Growth in the Regions of Europe

Download or read book Economic Growth in the Regions of Europe written by Sascha Sardadvar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-01-12 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although interest in spatial growth regressions has been growing in recent years, formal theoretical approaches that acknowledge the role of space in economic growth have been sparse. In particular in a regional context, the assumption of independent, non-interacting closed economies can lead to misinterpretations. This book fills the void by discussing neoclassical growth theory in a spatial context, in order to examine growth both theoretically and empirically in a system of N regional economies. A formal model is presented that allows for interregional fixed capital relocations, which are in turn determined by the economies’ relative locations in space. It is shown how initial endowments with human capital play a decisive role regarding the evolution of output, and how both convergence and divergence processes may occur. Using a spatial econometric model specification, the theoretical model is tested empirically for 255 European regions.

Book R D in Europe Expenditures across Sectors Regions and Firm Sizes

Download or read book R D in Europe Expenditures across Sectors Regions and Firm Sizes written by Kristian Uppenberg and published by CEPS. This book was released on 2009 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Europe’s growth outlook has weakened notably in the wake of the global financial crisis, and policy-makers are understandably preoccupied with achieving a near-term rebound. But sustained growth can only be achieved by also addressing the structural causes of low growth. One such element is Europe’s relatively low spending on research and development (R&D), which hampers innovation and productivity growth. This study sheds light on this shortfall by decomposing R&D spending along different dimensions. It shows that Europe’s underinvestment in R&D is unevenly distributed across countries, regions and sectors. Strong economic forces underpinning this differentiation imply that misdirected R&D policies could be highly wasteful. Another key finding is that, by its sheer size, the services sector accounts for a substantial portion of Europe’s lag vis-à-vis the United States in terms of both R&D spending and productivity growth. This points to a continuing need to foster competition and deregulation in this protected segment of the economy, if higher economic growth is to be achieved.
