This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order for the European Union to achieve the ambitious targets it has set for the energy and digital transitions and its defence and space agenda, it needs undisrupted access to critical raw materials and to many products which contain them. This foresight study presents a systematic and detailed analysis of the complete supply chains, from raw and processed materials to components, assemblies, super-assemblies and systems, for 15 key technologies across the five strategic sectors (renewable energy, electromobility, energy-intensive industry, digital, and aerospace/defence) responsible for the delivery of these targets. The study assesses supply chain dependencies and forecasts materials demand until 2050 in the EU, other economic regions and the world. It also assesses the EU's materials needs and vulnerabilities now and in the future. As such, it provides a forward-looking basis to help identify strategic raw materials for key technologies and applications, to identify bottlenecks and to pinpoint the segments of supply chains which need strengthening and how. This study contributes scientific evidence to underpin the Critical Raw Materials Act, in tandem with which it is published.

Book excerpt: The European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) and the Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3) have jointly developed Trade-SCAN v2 (Trade Supply Chain Analysis), a user-friendly tool for global value chains analysis, in support of the European Commission's Directorate General for Trade's (DG TRADE) policymaking. As in many policy and academic areas, international trade is at the core of Trade-SCAN v2. Exports (encompassing both intermediate and final product exports) and final demand constitute the object of analysis of this tool. Both exports and the demand for final products generate a series of effects across all industries and countries participating upstream and downstream of the supply chains. Recent research into global value chains, together with the availability of global multiregional input-output databases, has made it possible to trace the origin of the value added incorporated in traded goods depending on their use and destination. Trade-SCAN v2 implements a novel mathematical framework for the decomposition of bilateral gross exports developed by Arto et al. (2019). The approach is based on the foundations of input-output economics and matrix algebra. This framework allows the decomposition of a country's bilateral gross exports, measured at the border, into a single expression. Trade-SCAN v2 provides a full decomposition of bilateral gross trade (from a country perspective) into foreign, domestic and double-counting components, facilitating the calculation of bilateral gross exports in value added terms as well as the employment and CO2 emissions embodied in the bilateral gross exports of countries. Furthermore, it includes the calculation of the foreign/domestic factor contents of the final demand of countries and regions: value added components, employment and CO2 emissions, by sector, skill, gender, age group, etc. For value added, for instance, Trade-SCAN v2 allows the identification of the country and industry where the value added is generated, the exporting country and industry, the importing country and industry, the country and industry producing the final goods and the country whose final demand is ultimately driving the exports. Trade-SCAN v2 allows the possibility to choose between three different global multiregional input-output tables: the OECD 2018 Inter-Country Input-Output Tables (oe.cd/icio), the European Commission-funded World Input-Output Database (www.wiod.org), and EXIOBASE3.4 (www.exiobase.eu). The Eurostat-FIGARO (https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/web/experimental-statistics/figaro) database will be added in 2021. The design of this tool facilitates global value chain analysis. Therefore, the intended audience of Trade-SCAN v2 tool is mainly policy-makers, but it can also be useful for academic, educational or informational purposes. This document shows how to use the three modules of Trade-SCAN, the ad-hoc queries, the pocketbook and the dashboard. It also demonstrates the potential of the ad-hoc queries module with a series of examples extracted from five reports published by the JRC and DG TRADE (Arto et al., 2018a, 2018b, 2020a, 2020b, 2020c).

Book Reassessing the Decline of EU Manufacturing er

Download or read book Reassessing the Decline of EU Manufacturing er written by and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The declining contribution of EU manufacturing to total GDP and the simultaneous fall of its share in global manufacturing have led to concerns about an overall loss of EU competitiveness, in particular vis-à-vis China. We analyse the empirical evidence underpinning these concerns by applying a newly developed decomposition technique to global input-output data spanning the years 2000 to 2014. In this, we consider both the sectoral and final demand (or value chain) definition of manufacturing. We find, first, that manufacturing's lower share in EU total value added has generally been exaggerated due to the use of nominal measures, noting that higher-tech manufacturing actually grew in real terms. Second, the decomposition analysis reveals that lower economic growth in the EU relative to the world had the strongest negative impact on the contribution of its manufacturing sector, while shifts in demand patterns exerted a negative (positive) impact for activities with lower (higher) technological content. And third, the observed loss of market shares confirms a downturn of EU manufacturing competitiveness, especially in textiles and electronics, with pharmaceuticals as the only industry showing resilience under external competition.

Book Supply Chain System

Download or read book Supply Chain System written by Peter M. Barczak and published by Piotr Barczak. This book was released on 2021 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Different management strategies and diversification of business entities make the concept of "supply chain" dynamic and evolve in the theory and practice of business. The semantic concept of the words "supply chain" is questionable. A literature review identifies three main perceptions of supply chain. Supply chain management is a decision-making process related to the synchronization of the physical, information and financial flows of demand and supply flowing between its participants in order to achieve their competitive advantage, create added value and value for the customer, for the benefit of all its links, including suppliers, recipients and other stakeholders. The book is a concise and in-depth analysis of the materials used for my doctoral dissertation in economics in the field of management. I also included material that I have presented in scientific studies and books. It presents a new perspective on supply chains, which according to this concept are divided with regard to the acting forces of synergy. Synergy contradicts the idea of 2 + 2 =5. While analyzing the groups, I conducted experiments which showed that a synergistic group aims to maintain its shared energy at a certain level. Therefore, I formulated an innovative rule supported by the formula E1 + E2 + E3 = constant to explain the formation of small social groups. This book provides the first explanation of group consciousness.

Book Understanding Value Chains

Download or read book Understanding Value Chains written by Sarah Faust and published by . This book was released on 2020-04-23 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding Value Chains first examines the process of the institutionalization of the main theoretical foundations of the global value chain since its conception in the academic field and, subsequently, in international organizations. The authors analyse the evolution of Mode 5 services jobs and salaries in the EU, assessing whether there are signs of functional upgrading and how it affects female jobs and the gender pay gap. The coffee global value chain is broken down into five segments: primary production, processing, trade, roasting, and marketing. An investigation of 34 Indonesian provinces was conducted in an effort to reformulate the policies relating to circular sustainable reverse logistics. Four new components: vision, mission, and managerial orientation; infrastructure capabilities; human resource and organizational commitment; and regulation are used to assess the readiness of each level of government. The authors discuss how, as the UK had no trade agreement with the African, Caribbean, and Pacific countries immediately after the referendum vote, this transition period presents an excellent opportunity to negotiate a new trade agreement. Value chain analysis is used to help understand how Guyana participates in the gold value chain, and to help develop appropriate policies to address its supply-side limitations. Guinéa-Bissau's position in the cashew value chain is assessed, and recommendations to address challenges are proposed. This compilation presents the agricultural value chain framework, introducing the main ideas of the system dynamics methodology and demonstrating the application of system dynamics modeling to a real-world case.

Book Building Competitiveness in Africa s Agriculture

Download or read book Building Competitiveness in Africa s Agriculture written by C. Martin Webber and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2009-12-16 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Value chain based approaches offer tremendous scope for market-based improvements in production, productivity, rural economy diversification, and household incomes, but are often covered by literature that is too conceptual or heavily focused on analysis. This has created a gap in the information available to planners, practitioners, and value chain participants. Furthermore, few references are available on how these approaches can be applied specifically to developing agriculture in Africa. 'Building Competitiveness in Africa s Agriculture: A Guide to Value Chain Concepts and Applications' describes practical implementation approaches and illustrates them with scores of real African agribusiness case studies. Using these examples, the 'Guide' presents a range of concepts, analytical tools, and methodologies centered on the value chain that can be used to design, implement, and evaluate agricultural and agribusiness development initiatives. It stresses principles of market focus, collaboration, information sharing, and innovation. The 'Guide' begins by examining core concepts and issues related to value chains. A brief literature review then focuses on five topics of particular relevance to African agricultural value chains. These topics address challenges faced by value chain participants and practitioners that resonate through the many cases described in the book. The core of the book presents methodological tools and approaches that blend important value chain concepts with the topics and with sound business principles. The tools and case studies have been selected for their usefulness in supporting market-driven, private-sector initiatives to improve value chains. The 'Guide' offers 13 implementation approaches, presented within the implementation cycle of a value chain program, followed by descriptions of actual cases. Roughly 60 percent of the examples are from Africa, while the rest come from Europe, Latin America, and Asia. The 'Guide' offers useful guidance to businesspeople, policy makers, representatives of farmer or trade organizations, and others who are engaged in agro-enterprise and agribusiness development. These readers will learn how to use value chain approaches in ways that can contribute to sound operational decisions, improved market linkage, and better results for enterprise and industry development.

Book Developing Sustainable Food Value Chains

Download or read book Developing Sustainable Food Value Chains written by David Neven and published by Food & Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO). This book was released on 2014 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using sustainable food value chain development (SFVCD) approaches to reduce poverty presents both great opportunities and daunting challenges. SFVCD requires a systems approach to identifying root problems, innovative thinking to find effective solutions and broad-based partnerships to implement programmes that have an impact at scale. In practice, however, a misunderstanding of its fundamental nature can easily result in value-chain projects having limited or non-sustainable impact. Furthermore, development practitioners around the world are learning valuable lessons from both failures and successes, but many of these are not well disseminated. This new set of handbooks aims to address these gaps by providing practical guidance on SFVCD to a target audience of policy-makers, project designers and field practitioners. This first handbook provides a solid conceptual foundation on which to build the subsequent handbooks. It (1) clearly defines the concept of a sustainable food value chain; (2) presents and discusses a development paradigm that integrates the multidimensional concepts of sustainability and value added; (3) presents, discusses and illustrates ten principles that underlie SFVCD; and (4) discusses the potential and limitations of using the value-chain concept in food-systems development. By doing so, the handbook makes a strong case for placing SFVCD at the heart of any strategy aimed at reducing poverty and hunger in the long run.

Book Sustainable Initiatives and Due Diligence in the EU Supply Chain

Download or read book Sustainable Initiatives and Due Diligence in the EU Supply Chain written by Kristian Prior and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2022-08-24 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2022 in the subject Business economics - Supply, Production, Logistics, grade: A, Copenhagen Business School, language: English, abstract: Using primary data gathered from both virtual semi-structured interviews and a quantitative survey, a triangular approach was used to investigate how firms work with different initiatives regarding sustainability in supply chains - both in terms of environmental and social sustainability. Furthermore, reactions to recently enacted and upcoming supply chain legislation was documented. The quantitative data was mainly used to supplement findings from the qualitative interviews. Selected respondents were featured through mini-cases that highlighted firm sustainability initiatives pertaining to supply chain management. From the analyzed data, four distinct propositions-each with circumstantial sub-propositions- were developed that highlight four interlinked themes concerning sustainability and supply chain management: leverage, information exchange, visibility, and supplier upgrading. The propositions can be used by business managers as a source of direction while designing, implementing, and managing sustainability initiatives in their respective supply chains in response to increasing due diligence requirements. Furthermore, legislators may review respondent concerns as well as the developed propositions to address externalities stemming from global value chains and update the legislation accordingly. Numerous government bodies have begun enacting increased due diligence requirements on business supply chains to curb harmful externalities that affect global sustainability initiatives. At the international level, the EU has recently proposed mandatory human rights due diligence (MHRDD) for global value chains, which is a mandated form of corporate social responsibility (CSR). Traditionally, due diligence and CSR have been voluntary tools to appease stakeholders. However, these voluntary approaches have been unsuccessful at curbing unsustainable business practices. Research combining sustainability and supply chain management has been increasing in recent years, as well as evolving to include themes found outside management research. Furthermore, the research environment has identified tools that explain how to manage global value chains in a sustainable way, but hasn't specifically addressed the changing legal environment, nor how to manage greater due diligence requirements. Overall, our findings contribute to the growing field of sustainable supply chain management and may easily be tested and expanded upon by future research.
