Book UK Success Stories in Industrial Mathematics

Download or read book UK Success Stories in Industrial Mathematics written by Philip J. Aston and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-02-04 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication showcases the work of UK mathematicians and statisticians by describing industrial problems that have been successfully solved, together with a summary of the financial and/or societal impact that arose from the work. The articles are grouped by sector, and include contributions to climate modelling, engineering and health. The articles are based on Impact Case Studies that were submitted to the Research Excellence Framework (REF2014), a UK government sponsored exercise that assessed the research quality within UK universities. There are many publications in the realm of ‘popular mathematics’ as well as a vast research literature that underpins this. This work is aimed at a middle ground between these two. Articles contain some mathematical detail, but the emphasis is on telling the story of a successful collaboration between academia and industry and on the results obtained. UK Success Stories in Industrial Mathematics is therefore accessible to a wide readership with interest in the applications of mathematics and statistics to problems of industrial importance and to those interested in how mathematics and statistics research affects our everyday lives and leads to economic and societal benefits.

Book Progress in Industrial Mathematics at ECMI 2000

Download or read book Progress in Industrial Mathematics at ECMI 2000 written by Angelo M. Anile and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 667 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Realizing the need of interaction between universities and research groups in industry, the European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry (ECMI) was founded in 1986 by mathematicians from ten European universities. Since then it has been continuously extending and now it involves about all Euro pean countries. The aims of ECMI are • To promote the use of mathematical models in industry. • To educate industrial mathematicians to meet the growing demand for such experts. • To operate on a European Scale. Mathematics, as the language of the sciences, has always played an im portant role in technology, and now is applied also to a variety of problems in commerce and the environment. European industry is increasingly becoming dependent on high technology and the need for mathematical expertise in both research and development can only grow. These new demands on mathematics have stimulated academic interest in Industrial Mathematics and many mathematical groups world-wide are committed to interaction with industry as part of their research activities. ECMI was founded with the intention of offering its collective knowledge and expertise to European Industry. The experience of ECMI members is that similar technical problems are encountered by different companies in different countries. It is also true that the same mathematical expertise may often be used in differing industrial applications.

Book Applications Practical Conceptualization Mathematics fruitful Innovation

Download or read book Applications Practical Conceptualization Mathematics fruitful Innovation written by Robert S. Anderssen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-11 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of papers presented at the conference “Forum Math-for-Industry 2014” for which the unifying theme was “Applications + Practical Conceptualization + Mathematics = fruitful Innovation” in October 2014. This epigram encapsulates the dynamics of the process that takes an application through to an innovation. Industrial mathematics can be viewed as the causal engine that implements the epigram by taking an Application such as input and convolving it with a mixture of Practical Conceptualization and Mathematics to generate a fruitful Innovation as output. The book illustrates various aspects of the two-way interaction between applications and their association highlighting how practical conceptualization assists with the linking of the question that encapsulates the current application to the relevant mathematics. The contents of this volume address productive and successful interaction between industry and mathematicians, as well as the cross-fertilization and collaboration that result when mathematics is involved with the advancement of science and technology.

Book The Invisible Power of Mathematics

Download or read book The Invisible Power of Mathematics written by Giovanni Samaey and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-03-15 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does homebanking work? How are board games developed? How reliable can wind energy get? How do we discover forged paintings? Do smart girls stay single? How dangerous can a bioterrorist get? In all these questions (and many others), mathematics plays a crucial role in the search for an answer. This book tells the story behind twenty of these questions. This is explicitly not a mathematics book, but a book about the crucial role that mathematics plays in devising the creative solutions the world needs. The questions are divided into three categories: home, garden and kitchen mathematics; mathematics for the workplace; and mathematics for tomorrow's society. The themes illustrate not only the incredibly broad applicability of mathematics in the world around us, but also the great diversity of useful mathematical techniques.

Book Progress in Industrial Mathematics at ECMI 2008

This book was released on 2010-07-23 with total page 1060 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 15th European Conference on Mathematics for Industry was held in the agreeable surroundings of University College London, just 5 minutes walk from the British Museum in the heart of London, over the ?ve warm, sunny days from 30 June to 4 July 2008. Participants from all over the world met with the commonaimofreinforcingthe roleofmathematics asanoverarching resource for industry and business. The conference attracted over 300 participants from 30 countries, most of them participating with either a contributed talk, a minisymposium pres- tation or a plenary lecture. ‘Mathematics in Industry’ was interpreted in its widest sense as can be seen from the range of applications and techniques described in this volume. We mention just two examples. The Alan Tayler Lecture was given by Mario Primicerio on a problem arising from moving oil through pipelines when temperature variations a?ect the shearing properties of wax and thus modify the ?ow. The Wacker Prize winner, Master’s student Lauri Harhanen from the Helsinki University of Technology, showed how a novel piece of mathematics allowed new software to capture real-time images of teeth from the data supplied by present day dental machinery (see ECMI Newsletter 44). The meeting was attended by leading ?gures from government, bu- ness and science who all shared the same aim – to promote the application of innovative mathematics to industry, and identify industrial sectors that o?er the most exciting opportunities for mathematicians to provide new insight and new ideas.

Book Numerical Algebra Matrix Theory Differential Algebraic Equations and Control Theory

Download or read book Numerical Algebra Matrix Theory Differential Algebraic Equations and Control Theory written by Peter Benner and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-05-09 with total page 635 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume highlights the scientific contributions of Volker Mehrmann, a leading expert in the area of numerical (linear) algebra, matrix theory, differential-algebraic equations and control theory. These mathematical research areas are strongly related and often occur in the same real-world applications. The main areas where such applications emerge are computational engineering and sciences, but increasingly also social sciences and economics. This book also reflects some of Volker Mehrmann's major career stages. Starting out working in the areas of numerical linear algebra (his first full professorship at TU Chemnitz was in "Numerical Algebra," hence the title of the book) and matrix theory, Volker Mehrmann has made significant contributions to these areas ever since. The highlights of these are discussed in Parts I and II of the present book. Often the development of new algorithms in numerical linear algebra is motivated by problems in system and control theory. These and his later major work on differential-algebraic equations, to which he together with Peter Kunkel made many groundbreaking contributions, are the topic of the chapters in Part III. Besides providing a scientific discussion of Volker Mehrmann's work and its impact on the development of several areas of applied mathematics, the individual chapters stand on their own as reference works for selected topics in the fields of numerical (linear) algebra, matrix theory, differential-algebraic equations and control theory.
