This book was released on 2012-01-06 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: scholarly journal European Polygraph, which henceforth will be published quarterly. The original version of the journal is the paper edition. The home of the polygraph is the United States; it was there that the first polygraph was built and first used in practice. A substantial portion of the scientific studies fundamental to polygraph research was also conducted in the United States and the results have been published in American scientific and specialist journals. Finally, the United States host the largest organisation in the world for persons involved in various aspects of polygraph examinations – the American Polygraph Association. Asia is without a doubt the second continent – after America – in which the polygraph has entered into permanent practise and is the subject of scientific research. Scientific and experimental research on the polygraph, analysis of its practical applications, and the widespread use of polygraph examinations in Israel and Japan are well-known. The polygraph is popular in many other Asian countries, such as Singapore, Malaysia, and Taiwan. The use of polygraph examinations in Latin America is also known. In Europe, the polygraph has been used relatively the least, or at any rate information on it has been the least well-known. Further, European scientific work on polygraph examinations seems disproportionately meagre compared to European scientific potential. Traditionally, Western Europe has not been favourably disposed in general toward polygraph examinations. Further, the work on polygraph examinations conducted in Central and Eastern Europe – apart perhaps from Poland and the former Yugoslavia – was also not widely known around the world. After the unification of Europe – made possible with the fall of communism and the end of Soviet domination in the region that took place several years ago – it is possible to speak once again about a single European science. As it turns out, many Central and Eastern European countries have their own – though not widely known – body of scientific work and practical experience with polygraph examinations. The attitude toward polygraph examinations is changing in Western countries as well, as evidenced by the increasingly wider use of the polygraph by the Belgian police or the change in attitudes toward the polygraph noted in Germany. Our journal was conceived as an international forum upon which to present the achievements and scientific research in polygraph examinations. The forum will also serve as a means by which to exchange practical experience from many countries and publish book reviews of works devoted to the subject. The issue of polygraph examinations includes basic research in myriad fields such as psychology, psychiatry, psychophysiology, criminology, forensic sciences – and in the near future – certainly also neurophysiology and others. The journal will also deal with approaches and research conducted as part of criminal justice, jurisprudence (criminal procedure), human rights, labour law, and others. It will also contain philosophical and strictly ethical reflections on polygraph examinations. Our objective is to publish works on polygraph examinations from this broad spectrum of sciences. We will publish both the results of experimental research, as well as analyses of practises, case studies, works on the history of polygraph examinations, legal considerations on polygraph examinations and their admissibility in investigations and court cases, as well as pre-employment and control examinations such as those used in the civil service and in business. We will also publish training materials based on practical experience, book reviews of works on polygraph examinations, and proceedings from conferences and seminars devoted to the subject. We invite all of you to co-operate in this endeavour. Prof. Jan Widacki LL.D. Editor-in-Chief

Book Handbook of Public Protection

Download or read book Handbook of Public Protection written by Mike Nash and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-09-27 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public protection has become an increasingly central theme in the work of the criminal justice agencies in many parts of the world in recent years. Its high public profile and consequent political sensitivity means that growing numbers of criminal justice professionals find their daily work load dominated by the assessment and management of high risk of harm offenders. Developments such as sex offender registers and (in the UK) Multi Agency Public Protection Arrangements (Mappa) have made this issue not only a core activity for police, probation and prison services, but to a range of other organizations as well, in particular social work and the health services. Partnership has become central to the concept of public protection. At the same time the concept of public protection has occasioned increased political debate. Protecting the public from high risk or dangerous offenders has become an international issue and has increasingly shaped criminal justice policy. This text brings together leading authorities in the field, providing authoritative coverage of the theory and practice of public protection, both in the UK and internationally. It provides a critical review of contemporary public protection practice as well as up-to-date research and thinking in the field.

Book Internet Child Abuse Current Research and Policy

Download or read book Internet Child Abuse Current Research and Policy written by Julia Davidson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-09-13 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Internet Child Abuse: Current Research and Policy provides a timely overview of international policy, legislation and offender management and treatment practice in the area of Internet child abuse. Internet use has grown considerably over the last five years, and information technology now forms a core part of the formal education system in many countries. There is however, increasing evidence that the Internet is used by some adults to access children and young people in order to ‘groom’ them for the purposes of sexual abuse; as well as to produce and distribute indecent illegal images of children. This book presents and assesses the most recent and current research on internet child abuse, addressing: its nature, the behaviour and treatment of its perpetrators, international policy, legislation and protection, and policing. It will be required reading for an international audience of academics, researchers, policy-makers and criminal justice practitioners with interests in this area.

  • Pages : 369 pages

Download or read book Without History written by Jose Rabasa and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2010-06 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rabasa offers new interpretations of the meaning of history from indigenous perspectives and develops the concept of a communal temporality that is not limited by time, but rather exists within the individual, community, and culture as a living knowledge that links both past and present. Rabasa recalls the works of Marx, Lenin, and Gramsci, and contemporary south Asian subalternists Ranajit Guha and Dipesh Chakrabarty, among others. He incorporates their conceptions of communality, insurgency, resistance to hegemonic governments, and the creation of autonomous spaces as strategies employed by indigenous groups around the globe, but goes further in defining these strategies as millennial and deeply rooted in Mesoamerican antiquity.

Book Legal Developments During 30 Years of Lithuanian Independence

Download or read book Legal Developments During 30 Years of Lithuanian Independence written by Gintaras Švedas and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-17 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides an overview of selected major areas of legal and institutional development in Lithuania since the Restoration of Independence in 1990. The respective chapters discuss changes in fields varying from the constitutional framework to criminal law and procedure. The content highlights four major aspects of the fundamental changes that have affected the entire legal system: the Post-Soviet country’s complex historical heritage; socio-political and other conditions in the process of adopting new (rule of law) standards; international legal influences on the national legal order over the past 30 years; and finally, the search for entirely new national legal models. Over a period of 30 years since gaining its independence from the Soviet Union, Lithuania has undergone unique social changes. The state restarted its independent journey burdened by the complicated heritage of the Soviet legal system. Some major reforms have taken place swiftly, while others have required years of thorough analysis of societal needs and the search for optimal examples in other states. The legal system is now substantially different, with some elements being entirely new, and others adapted to present needs.
