Download or read book European Polygraph 19 2012 1 written by Jan Widacki and published by Oficyna Wydawnicza AFM Krakowskie Towarzystwo Edukacyjne Sp. z o.o.. This book was released on 2012-01-06 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: scholarly journal European Polygraph, which henceforth will be published quarterly. The original version of the journal is the paper edition. The home of the polygraph is the United States; it was there that the first polygraph was built and first used in practice. A substantial portion of the scientific studies fundamental to polygraph research was also conducted in the United States and the results have been published in American scientific and specialist journals. Finally, the United States host the largest organisation in the world for persons involved in various aspects of polygraph examinations – the American Polygraph Association. Asia is without a doubt the second continent – after America – in which the polygraph has entered into permanent practise and is the subject of scientific research. Scientific and experimental research on the polygraph, analysis of its practical applications, and the widespread use of polygraph examinations in Israel and Japan are well-known. The polygraph is popular in many other Asian countries, such as Singapore, Malaysia, and Taiwan. The use of polygraph examinations in Latin America is also known. In Europe, the polygraph has been used relatively the least, or at any rate information on it has been the least well-known. Further, European scientific work on polygraph examinations seems disproportionately meagre compared to European scientific potential. Traditionally, Western Europe has not been favourably disposed in general toward polygraph examinations. Further, the work on polygraph examinations conducted in Central and Eastern Europe – apart perhaps from Poland and the former Yugoslavia – was also not widely known around the world. After the unification of Europe – made possible with the fall of communism and the end of Soviet domination in the region that took place several years ago – it is possible to speak once again about a single European science. As it turns out, many Central and Eastern European countries have their own – though not widely known – body of scientific work and practical experience with polygraph examinations. The attitude toward polygraph examinations is changing in Western countries as well, as evidenced by the increasingly wider use of the polygraph by the Belgian police or the change in attitudes toward the polygraph noted in Germany. Our journal was conceived as an international forum upon which to present the achievements and scientific research in polygraph examinations. The forum will also serve as a means by which to exchange practical experience from many countries and publish book reviews of works devoted to the subject. The issue of polygraph examinations includes basic research in myriad fields such as psychology, psychiatry, psychophysiology, criminology, forensic sciences – and in the near future – certainly also neurophysiology and others. The journal will also deal with approaches and research conducted as part of criminal justice, jurisprudence (criminal procedure), human rights, labour law, and others. It will also contain philosophical and strictly ethical reflections on polygraph examinations. Our objective is to publish works on polygraph examinations from this broad spectrum of sciences. We will publish both the results of experimental research, as well as analyses of practises, case studies, works on the history of polygraph examinations, legal considerations on polygraph examinations and their admissibility in investigations and court cases, as well as pre-employment and control examinations such as those used in the civil service and in business. We will also publish training materials based on practical experience, book reviews of works on polygraph examinations, and proceedings from conferences and seminars devoted to the subject. We invite all of you to co-operate in this endeavour. Prof. Jan Widacki LL.D. Editor-in-Chief

Book South Africa Can Work

Download or read book South Africa Can Work written by Frans Rautenbach and published by Penguin Random House South Africa. This book was released on 2017-08-18 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What will it take to turn South Africa around? In this insightful and provocative book, Frans Rautenbach proposes a complete overhaul of policy thinking, and provides fresh arguments that effectively address South Africa’s unemployment, race problems and lack of education. Rautenbach examines the fundamental problem of rent-seeking, to which he proposes two antidotes: the free market and decentralisation of government. Along the way he tackles holy cows such as affirmative action, trade unions, labour law and welfare payments. He also addresses contentious topics such as racism, white privilege, political correctness, state funding of higher education and mounting evidence that trade unions substantially suppress employment growth. Written by a labour lawyer with a proven track record in a range of policy issues, South Africa Can Work speaks effectively to a cross-section of readers of all disciplines, and brings sorely needed good news.

Book Migrant Resistance in Contemporary Europe

Download or read book Migrant Resistance in Contemporary Europe written by Maurice Stierl and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-31 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past few years, increased ‘unauthorised’ migrations into the territories of Europe have resulted in one of the most severe crises in the history of the European Union. Stierl explores migration and border struggles in contemporary Europe and the ways in which they animate, problematise, and transform the region and its political formation. This volume follows public protests of migrant activists, less visible attempts of those on the move to ‘irregularly’ subvert borders, as well as new solidarities and communities that emerge in interwoven struggles for the freedom of movement. Stierl offers a conceptualisation of migrant resistances as forces of animation through which European forms of border governance can be productively explored. As catalysts that set socio-political processes into frictional motion, they are developed as modes of critical investigation, indeed, as method. By ethnographically following and being implicated in different migration struggles that contest the ways in which Europe decides over and enacts who does, and does not, belong, the author probes what they reveal about the condition of Europe in the contemporary moment. This work will be of great interest to students and scholars of Migration, Border, Security and Citizenship Studies, as well as the Political Sciences more generally.

Book Russian Conflict Management and European Security Governance

Download or read book Russian Conflict Management and European Security Governance written by Lance Davies and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-09-23 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Russia’s controversial annexation of Crimea in 2014 and its involvement in the conflict in Ukraine have left international audiences stunned. Russia now occupies a central place on the Western security agenda and has been recast as an important area of scholarly inquiry. The conflict has raised important questions about Russia’s understanding of conflict management and its approach to contemporary European security. This book provides a timely and contextual exploration of Russia’s post-Soviet legacy of conflict management in the backdrop of its interaction with Europe’s system of security governance. By exploring Russia’s approach from the early 1990s to the present day, the book offers a comprehensive exploration into the evolution of Russian behavior, investigating whether Russia’s approach has developed in accordance with the policies and practices of security governance that have emerged in the European experience of conflict management. Together with extensive documentary analysis and elite interviews, it employs the framework of security governance to examine Moscow’s behavior across a set of case studies situated in the European political and security environment. It offers a timely contribution to our understanding of Russia’s response to intrastate conflict and Russia’s broader engagement with its contemporary security environment.

Book Anthropocene or Capitalocene

Download or read book Anthropocene or Capitalocene written by Jason W. Moore and published by PM Press. This book was released on 2016-06-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Earth has reached a tipping point. Runaway climate change, the sixth great extinction of planetary life, the acidification of the oceans—all point toward an era of unprecedented turbulence in humanity’s relationship within the web of life. But just what is that relationship, and how do we make sense of this extraordinary transition? Anthropocene or Capitalocene? offers answers to these questions from a dynamic group of leading critical scholars. They challenge the theory and history offered by the most significant environmental concept of our times: the Anthropocene. But are we living in the Anthropocene, literally the “Age of Man”? Is a different response more compelling, and better suited to the strange—and often terrifying—times in which we live? The contributors to this book diagnose the problems of Anthropocene thinking and propose an alternative: the global crises of the twenty-first century are rooted in the Capitalocene, the Age of Capital. Anthropocene or Capitalocene? offers a series of provocative essays on nature and power, humanity, and capitalism. Including both well-established voices and younger scholars, the book challenges the conventional practice of dividing historical change and contemporary reality into “Nature” and “Society,” demonstrating the possibilities offered by a more nuanced and connective view of human environment-making, joined at every step with and within the biosphere. In distinct registers, the authors frame their discussions within a politics of hope that signal the possibilities for transcending capitalism, broadly understood as a “world-ecology” that joins nature, capital, and power as a historically evolving whole. Contributors include Jason W. Moore, Eileen Crist, Donna J. Haraway, Justin McBrien, Elmar Altvater, Daniel Hartley, and Christian Parenti.

Book Under the Literary Microscope

Download or read book Under the Literary Microscope written by Sina Farzin and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2021-05-03 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Science in fiction,” “geek novels,” “lab-lit”—whatever one calls them, a new generation of science novels has opened a space in which the reading public can experience and think about the powers of science to illuminate nature as well as to generate and mitigate social change and risks. Under the Literary Microscope examines the implications of the discourse taking place in and around this creative space. Exploring works by authors as disparate as Barbara Kingsolver, Richard Powers, Ian McEwan, Ann Patchett, Margaret Atwood, and Michael Crichton, these essays address the economization of scientific institutions; ethics, risk, and gender disparity in scientific work; the reshaping of old stereotypes of scientists; science in an evolving sci-fi genre; and reader reception and potential contributions of the novels to public understandings of science. Under the Literary Microscope illuminates the new ways in which fiction has been grappling with scientific issues—from climate change and pandemics to artificial intelligence and genomics—and makes a valuable addition to both contemporary literature and science studies courses. In addition to the editors, the contributors include Anna Auguscik, Jay Clayton, Carol Colatrella, Sonja Fücker, Raymond Haynes, Luz María Hernández Nieto, Emanuel Herold, Karin Hoepker, Anton Kirchhofer, Antje Kley, Natalie Roxburgh, Uwe Schimank, Sherryl Vint, and Peter Weingart.

Book Teacher Education as an Ongoing Professional Trajectory

Download or read book Teacher Education as an Ongoing Professional Trajectory written by Denise Mifsud and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-04-26 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited book provides a critical re-reading of the concept of teacher education, in addition to a re-thinking of the sole focus on Initial Teacher Education (ITE), with implications for education policy, theory, and practice. This book presents new investigations that explore the concept of teacher education from ITE to retirement and how this is being enacted within the various distinct European and international education contexts. It demonstrates teaching and teacher education as a deeply contested field within European education and within the different national contexts of Europe. Contributions in this book expose teacher education as a continuum of teacher learning that is set off from the beginning of the teachers’ own schooling and continues throughout their entire teaching career. The chapters deal with various issues, namely teacher induction and mentoring; teacher agency; teachers as researchers; the role of the head teacher; schools as learning communities; and distinct ITE practices. It is intended for postgraduate students and researchers with an interest in teaching and teacher education, educational policies and politics, and educational philosophy, as well as practitioners.

  • Release : 2023-06-12
  • ISBN : 9403531665

Download or read book Privacy work written by Frank Hendrickx and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2023-06-12 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The right to privacy is a fundamental right. Along with the related right to personal data protection, it has come to take a central place in contemporary employment relations and shows significant relevance for the future of work. This thoroughly researched volume, which offers insightful essays by leading European academics and policymakers in labour and employment law, is the first to present a thoroughly up-to-date Europe-wide survey and analysis of the intensive and growing interaction of workplace relations systems with developments in privacy law. With abundant reference to the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation, the case law of the European Court of Human Rights, and the work of the International Labour Organisation, the book proceeds as a series of country chapters, each by a recognised expert in a specific jurisdiction. Legal comparison is based on a questionnaire circulated to the contributors in advance. Each country chapter addresses the national legal weight of such issues and topics as the following: interaction of privacy and data protection law; legitimacy, purpose limitation, and data minimisation; transparency; role of consent; artificial intelligence and automated decision-making; health-related data, including biometrics and psychological testing; monitoring and surveillance; and use of social media. A detailed introductory overview begins the volume. The research for this book is based on a dynamic methodology, founded in scientific desk research and expert networking. Recognising that the need for further guidance for privacy at work has been demonstrated by various European and international bodies, this book delivers a signal contribution to the field for social partners, practitioners, policymakers, scholars, and all other stakeholders working at the crossroads of privacy, data protection, and labour law.
