Book excerpt: Published in 1963: The three essays bound together in ths book are based upon lectures given by the author as a Univesity Lecturer in Modern History at Oxford. The Lectures were not intended as a substitute for the excellent textbooks of modern European history published in recent years. The choice of subject and more of treatment were determined by the questions of students and others attempting to find in this history of modern Europe something more than a chronicale of events, a list of dates and names, a catalogue of political and consititutional changes.

Book An Outline of Recent European History 1815 1916 Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Outline of Recent European History 1815 1916 Classic Reprint written by Clarence Perkins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-06-28 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of Recent European History, 1815-1916 This outline with the accompanying references is a revision and enlargement of An Outline for the History of Europe Since 1815 prepared in 1913 for the use of students at the Ohio State University. Like its predecessor it contains much fuller references on the period since 1870 than on the earlier years. Both Hazen's Europe Since 1915 and the second volume of Hayes's Political and Social History of Mod ern Europe have been followed in preparing the outline; and references to both these excellent books have been appended to most of the topics. Students should read one or both of these and at least one of the Additional References under each special topic. The purpose of the outline is not to provide a brief summary of the facts, predigested mental pabulum, as it were; but to provide a scheme of organization, to suggest to the student what he is to look for as he reads, and to teach liim to distinguish between essentials and non essentials. Hence the facts are not usually stated, but the student is left to work them out from his reference readings both in Hazen and Hayes and the Additional References. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of Recent European History, 1815-1916 This outline with the accompanying references is a revision and enlargement of previous editions of "An Outline of Recent European History" prepared in 1916 and 1918 for the use of students at the Ohio State University. Like its predecessors it contains much fuller references to the period since 1870 than the earlier years. Hazen, Europe Since 1815, Schapiro, Modern and Contemporary European History, and the second volume of Hayes, Political and Social History of Modern Europe have been followed in preparing the outline; and references to all these excellent books have been appended to most of the topics. Book The Age of Reform 1815 1870

Download or read book The Age of Reform 1815 1870 written by Ernest Llewellyn Woodward and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1962 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between Waterloo and Gladstone's first ministry, Britain underwent a series of rapid and complex changes. At home, repression gave way to reform of the franchise, local government, education, poor relief, and the factory and legal systems. Further agitation arose in the 1840s over the CornLaws, the People's Charter, and the Irish Question. By the 1860s, Britain was able to bask in the glow of the mid-Victorian supremacy forged by its economic might and the foreign policy pursued by Castlereagh, Canning, and Palmerston, which maintained the balance of power and extended the colonialempire. Authoritative and incisive, this newly paperbacked volume in the Oxford History of England is a classic study of Britain in the ascendant.

Book Europe in the Nineteenth Century

Download or read book Europe in the Nineteenth Century written by Ephraim Lipson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-16 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Europe in the Nineteenth Century: An Outline History This book was written in order to provide students and general readers with a short survey of the History of Europe in the Nineteenth Century. The plan on which the book was based has given rise to some discussion as to the best way of writing European History. Professor Hearnshaw, in his M win Currents of European History, after quoting the preface to the first edition, concluded in favour Of the more usual method, which he has himself followed in his own work, but most Of the reviewers of this book expressed their agree ment with the method here adopted. Experience Of teach ing the subject for several years has convinced me that the student is most likely to Obtain an intelligent grasp of European History when each country is treated, as far as possible, as a separate entity, although due recognition must be paid to the working of forces which have affected the destinies of all. I recognize, however, that there is ample room for both methods, nor is there any necessity for adopting one to the exclusion Of the other. Book Political History of Europe

Download or read book Political History of Europe written by B. H. Carroll and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Political History of Europe: From 1815 to 1848 Progress and Poverty, Dives and Lazarus have not yet made History. Neither the struggle, nor the outcome of the struggle, between Russia and Japan will be due to the fact that one lives on millet cakes and the other on rice. Lamprecht and the Leipziger school take a very narrow view of history when they attempt to view it from the corner of a cabbage patch. Sauer kraut is great in its effects, but not as a maker of history. It seems to be very enticing to some Americans to try to explain all things by some simple standard of measure ment like the annual output of potatoes.
