Book Maritime Clusters and the Ocean Economy

Download or read book Maritime Clusters and the Ocean Economy written by Peter B. Myles and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-07 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last decade the concept of clustering has become a central idea for analyzing the competitiveness of nations, industries and firms. This book shows how the cluster concept can be usefully applied to the study of maritime activities. Such activities, including shipping, shipbuilding and port and maritime services, are clearly geographically concentrated in a number of maritime clusters. However, as the author shows, these are having to compete with other uses of the coasts and oceans including capture fisheries, marine aquaculture, offshore energy and tourism. Sound governance and planning is therefore required to manage the competing claims for ocean space. The book shows how competing industries and other stakeholders can cooperate and benefit from an integrated approach to the development of maritime clusters. The contribution of approaches such as integrated coastal zone management and innovations such as ocean business councils, as well as coordinated networks of maritime clusters are reviewed. Case studies are included from around the world, including detailed examples of the development of the Nelson Mandela Bay Maritime Cluster in South Africa and from Poland in the Baltic Sea.

Book International Maritime Business Comparison of the German and the Greek maritime clusters

Download or read book International Maritime Business Comparison of the German and the Greek maritime clusters written by Hans-Christian Stockfisch and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2014-12-30 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 2,3, Hamburg School of Business Administration gGmbH (Maritime School), language: English, abstract: The purpose of this paper is to analyze the differences and similarities among shipping firms in the German and the Greek maritime clusters. In this context, market, financial, organizational, human resources and management related issues are identified and discussed. The two major European players in the global shipping market, namely the German and the Greek shipping firms, are currently facing several enormous challenges. The impact of global economic downturn, the crisis in the main shipping sectors and the changes in the pattern of world trade all profoundly affect the maritime transport industry (De Monie, Rodrigue und Notteboom 2011). However the Greek shipping companies seem to manage their businesses in the crisis more successfully than their German competitors. Therefore a report on the differences and similarities among shipping firms in the German and the Greek maritime clusters is of high interest. Even though both players focus on different segments in the maritime markets, that have different rules and conditions, the main parameters and aspects of their businesses will be compared. The focus of this report lies on market, financial, organizational, management and human resources related issues. Since these issues mainly touch strategic management decisions, this report will not go to deeply into the operational aspects of the businesses such as using Key Performance Indicators (KPI ́s) or other methods and applications that would serve these types of issues. The use of KPI ́s would also demand the same source of their collection to have an objective analysis, but since both players operate on different markets, only a small proportion of their KPI ́s would be comparable. Furthermore this paper will focus purely on companies that operate ships. Hence, ports, hinterland-logistics, education- or administration-facilities belonging to the maritime cluster will not be taken into account. After the German and Greek shipping firms have been compared, the report will highlight aspects that differentiate the particular maritime clusters and conclude with similar short prospects both players likely will face in the future.

Book The Maritime Cluster in the Baltic Sea Region and Beyond

Download or read book The Maritime Cluster in the Baltic Sea Region and Beyond written by Kari Liuhto and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the introduction: The countries surrounding the Baltic Sea differ from each other so much geographically, culturally and politically that if the sea did not connect them we would hardly refer to them as the Baltic Sea region. It is also unlikely that, without the Baltic Sea, the European Union would have drafted a regional strategy for this area. Another body of water - the Danube, which is almost 3,000 km long - links up the second macro-region in the EU. However, seas and rivers do not automatically unite nations. A look at a map of Europe will show that, in addition to mountains, bodies of water are the most common natural boundaries between countries. Seas, rivers and other bodies of water serve as connecting routes only to those who are able to use them. As a functional maritime cluster enables people to use bodies of water for transportation, the maritime cluster is in the epicentre for European integration and globalisation.

Book Building Industries at Sea Blue Growth and the New Maritime Economy

Download or read book Building Industries at Sea Blue Growth and the New Maritime Economy written by Kate Johnson and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2022-09-01 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the world there is evidence of mounting interest in marine resources and new maritime industries to create jobs, economic growth and to help in the provision of energy and food security. Expanding populations, insecurity of traditional sources of supply and the effects of climate change add urgency to a perceived need to address and overcome the serious challenges of working in the maritime environment. Four promising areas of activity for ‘Blue Growth’ have been identified at European Union policy level including Aquaculture; Renewable Energy (offshore wind, wave and tide); Seabed Mining; and Blue Biotechnology. Work has started to raise the technological and investment readiness levels (TRLs and IRLs) of these prospective industries drawing on the experience of established maritime industries such as Offshore Oil and Gas; Shipping; Fisheries and Tourism. An accord has to be struck between policy makers and regulators on the one hand, anxious to direct research and business incentives in effective and efficient directions, and developers, investors and businesses on the other, anxious to reduce the risks of such potentially profitable but innovative investments. The EU H2020 MARIBE (Marine Investment for the Blue Economy) funded project was designed to identify the key technical and non-technical challenges facing maritime industries and to place them into the social and economic context of the coastal and ocean economy. MARIBE went on to examine with companies, real projects for the combination of marine industry sectors into multi-use platforms (MUPs). The purpose of this book is to publish the detailed analysis of each prospective and established maritime business sector. Sector experts working to a common template explain what these industries are, how they work, their prospects to create wealth and employment, and where they currently stand in terms of innovation, trends and their lifecycle. The book goes on to describe progress with the changing regulatory and planning regimes in the European Sea Basins including the Caribbean where there are significant European interests. The book includes:• Experienced chapter authors from a truly multidisciplinary team of sector specialisms• First extensive study to compare and contrast traditional Blue Economy with Blue Growth• Complementary to EU and National policies for multi-use of maritime space

Book Sustainable Port Clusters and Economic Development

Download or read book Sustainable Port Clusters and Economic Development written by Elvira Haezendonck and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-03-18 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book belongs to the Port Economics and Global Supply Chain Management strand of the Palgrave Studies in Maritime Economics book series, commissioned by Hercules Haralambides. This book addresses the strategic alignment between port authorities and their supply chain partners, with a focus on governance challenges. Many port (authority) managers are engaged in efforts to improve their strategic alignment with business partners in their proximate geographic region, yet the economic objectives pursued can vary widely. These objectives can include improvements in port competitiveness and stability of traffic flows, as well as better access to scarce resources such as land and capital, or simply more control over the logistics chain. Using various Benelux seaports as case studies, the authors of this volume show that improving strategic alignment can involve a wide variety of different governance choices, ranging from top-down to bottom-up alliance formation, from project-driven to multi-activity collaboration, and from long-term contracting to full-fledged mergers. This book with state-of-the-art insight on modern port governance will be of interest to port managers around the globe, as well as to lecturers and students in maritime educational programs. Download or read book Ocean Governance written by Yen-Chiang Chang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-11-15 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ocean—a source of life, has been overused and heavily polluted. While the traditional approaches might not be able to solve the complexity of the ocean governance issues, there is a need to adopt a new way of thinking in order to deal with the current problems. This book emphasises the importance of law and policy while generating ocean governance initiatives. “Good Ocean Governance” as a new way of thinking, needs to be supported by legislation and decision makers. It is, therefore, necessary to examine whether the idea of good ocean governance exists within the international legal system and is subsequently subject to transfer into the domestic law. During this transaction process, a number of examples provided from the United States, Canada and Australia help to demonstrate the broad picture. Also included are discussions on the governance of marine resources, ship recycling and marine pollution, the impact of maritime clusters as well as social and culture impact of ports. The ultimate aim of this book is to tease out more new ideas and discussions on ocean governance issues.

Book Regional Research Driven Marine Clusters

Download or read book Regional Research Driven Marine Clusters written by Ana Hadžic and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The competitive advantage of the European Union in the maritime industry sector has to be sustained and depends mainly on the sector's performance, its flexibility and continuation of competitiveness. In this regard, shipbuilding is an important and strategic industry in a number of European Union member states and for the European Community as a whole. Research and development investment for boosting the sector is needed and has to focus on the development of critical and dynamic technologies both for products and production processes, helping the maritime industry compete successfully in global markets and benefit from the exploitation of the so called "motorways of the sea."The STARNETregio (FP7) project has been conceived to increase the overall capacity of regional players in the regions Friuli Venezia Giulia (Italy), Slovenia and the County of Rijeka (Croatia) to invest in research and development and carry out research activities concerning the marine industry, in specific the shipbuilding and port equipments, intended to strengthen and develop the sector's scientific and technological basis and ultimately the economic growth of the regions. This paper researches the results of the first phase of the project: establishment of the cluster framework, mapping of regional development plans and R&D key actors.
