Ryanair operates 300 Boeing 737-800 aircraft on over 1,100 routes across Europe and Morocco from 45 bases. The airline has been characterised by rapid expansion, a result of the deregulation of the aviation industry in Europe in 1997 and the success of its low-cost business model. Ryanair has grown since its establishment in 1985 from a small airline flying a short hop from Waterford to London into one of Europe's largest carriers. After the rapidly growing airline was taken public in 1997, the money raised was used to expand the airline into a pan-European carrier. Revenues have risen from 231 million in 1998, to 1843 million in 2003 and 3013 million in 2010. Similarly net profits have increased from 48 million to 339 million over the same period. Ryanair was founded in 1985 by Christopher Ryan, Liam Lonergan (owner of Irish travel agent Club Travel) and Irish businessman Tony Ryan (after whom the company is named), founder of Guinness Peat Aviation and father of Cathal Ryan and Declan. The airline began with a 14-seat Embraer Bandeirante turboprop aircraft, flying between Waterford and London Gatwick Airport with the aim of breaking the duopoly on London-Republic of Ireland flights at that time, held by British Airways and Aer Lingus. Book excerpt: When starting new airlines in response to government deregulation, entrepreneurs in the U.S. and Europe reduced some traditional service qualities (to reduce costs), concentrated on non-stop services between city pairs not already so connected, improved on-time performance, and offered low fares to win leisure travelers from the incumbents and to encourage more travel. In recent developments, some of the new airlines have offered optional extras (at higher fares) to attract business travelers and entered major routes alongside the legacy carriers. Within both the U.S. and Europe, deregulation removed most geographical barriers to expansion by short-haul airlines. Later, limited deregulation spread to other world regions, where many short-haul routes connect city pairs in different countries, and where governments have retained traditional two-country mechanisms restricting who may fly. To gain access to domestic routes in other countries, some new airlines are setting up affiliate companies in neighboring countries, with each company legally controlled in the country of domicile. With air travel growing strongly, especially in Asia, a common result is intense, but potentially short-lived, competition on major routes. The recent developments give clear signposts to likely mid-term outcomes, and make this an opportune time to report on the new-airline scene. The Airline Revolution will provide valuable economic analysis of this climate to students, airline professionals advancing to senior positions, public servants and others who provide advice to governments.

Moreover the transport industry can be a major beneficiary of tourism because of the additional passenger demand that may be generated. Aviation is an increasingly important mode of transport for tourism markets. Whilst geography has meant that, in modern times, air travel has always been the dominant mode for long distance travel and much international tourism, moves towards deregulation, and in particular the emergence of the low cost carrier sector, have also increased aviation's significance for short and medium haul tourism trips. Thus developments in aviation can have very major implications for many leisure and business tourism markets. However the characteristics and needs of leisure travellers are generally so very different from business travellers that this necessitates a separate consideration of these markets if a detailed understanding of the relationship with aviation is to be gained. In spite of the obvious closeness between the aviation and tourism industries, there are very few specialist texts on this subject. Most tourism focused books consider aviation as just one component of the tourism industry which needs to be discussed, whereas aviation specialist texts rarely concentrate on just leisure travel. In addition there is very little literature that gives a detailed appreciation of the complexities and potential conflicts associated with the development of coherent and effective aviation and tourism policies. Therefore it is the aim of this book to fill this important gap which exists with a comprehensive, in-depth study of the relationship between aviation and leisure travel. This increasing importance of the service sector will continue. It is predicted that a positive balance of additional employment in the next years will only be reached in the service sector. One practical example for the growing importance of services is the European aviation industry. Formerly exclusively dominated by a small number of state-aided airlines, the liberalisation of the industry during the 1990s’ was the starting point for a new era in the aviation industry. The airlines had to face competition and an innovative new sector developed itself to meet the customer needs by offering flights for affordable prices. In 2010 it is expected that the share of low fare air traffic in Europe will reach over 40%. The no-frills-concept of low fare airlines also generated new demand. In 2002 59% of the passengers of low fare airlines would not have travelled by air if the cheap tickets would not have been available. Goals of this study and Approach This study will describe the special characteristics of services and the requirements for marketing activities in the service sector compared to other areas. Thereby, special attention will be paid to low fare airlines, which have contributed to the increasing importance of the service sector in general and the aviation service sector in particular due to the reasons already mentioned. Firstly, the required terms in the context of service marketing will be described and different theoretical approaches will be presented. Several possibilities to define the main terms in the context of this case study will be given. Secondly, the special requirements of service marketing will be shown and compared to the marketing of products. Thirdly, the history and current situation of the low fare airline business will be shown and explained. Afterwards, the special challenges in the marketing of low fare airlines will be discussed. Solutions and possible approaches for a successful marketing of low fare airlines will be presented. The main focus will be on the expansion of the classical marketing mix, i.e. the 3 P people, physical facilities and process management. Finally, a brief outlook will be given which describes possible future developments and highlights several important fields, to which companies should pay attention.

Book excerpt: This report examines draft proposals from the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) to change the rules that govern how many hours a pilot can fly. The Transport Committee warns that working hours and conditions for pilots and cabin crew must be improved or safety could be at risk. Currently, the UK implements stricter flight time regulations than some other European countries, but under the new rules proposed by the European Aviation Safety Agency, the UK would not be able to have its own regime and the UK's current standards would be lowered. Fatigue is already an issue in aviation: 43% of pilots have reported falling asleep involuntarily at some point whilst on duty under the UK's current regulatory framework. The Committee recognises that flight time limitations are complex regulations, but the report highlights several issues where there is clear scope for improvement. The proposed 11 hour duty period at night for pilots flies in the face of scientific evidence and should be reduced to a 10 hour maximum. There is added concern that a pilot could land a plane after 22 hours awake. The Civil Aviation Authority must do more to monitor pilot hours so that long duty periods are the exception not the rule, and must address a culture of under-reporting of pilot fatigue. MPs accept that common European flight time limitations could improve aviation safety for UK passengers travelling on non-UK airlines. However, for these benefits to be realised the European standards must be uniformly high.
