Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from European Life and Manners, Vol. 2 of 2: In Familiar Letters to Friends My Dear S : I am told, by an old friend, that you never looked better. He, I think, has grown old, but I did not perceive that his optical or mental perceptions were at all dimmed, and, therefore, I still imagine you as bright and gay, and intelligent and cheerful as ever. But you have not grown any better, that is certain, or you would not have suffered him to have come without so much as one line to your old friend. Very old, indeed, I am; an age I little expected I ever should reach; and when persons return and tell you, at home, how well I look, it only means that I am not, perhaps, quite so weather-beaten, and decayed, and moss-covered, as they expected to see me in the interval during which I have been out of their sight. I am told you had a strong desire that your husband should come out here, and bring his wife with him. You never proposed a wiser thing. I cannot say how happy it would make me, to meet you here. Why cannot you do it now? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Being American in Europe 1750 1860

Download or read book Being American in Europe 1750 1860 written by Daniel Kilbride and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2013-05-15 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Americans made their Grand Tour of Europe, what did they learn about themselves? While visiting Europe In 1844, Harry McCall of Philadelphia wrote to his cousin back home of his disappointment. He didn’t mind Paris, but he preferred the company of Americans to Parisians. Furthermore, he vowed to be “an American, heart and soul” wherever he traveled, but “particularly in England.” Why was he in Europe if he found it so distasteful? After all, travel in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries was expensive, time consuming, and frequently uncomfortable. Being American in Europe, 1750–1860 tracks the adventures of American travelers while exploring large questions about how these experiences affected national identity. Daniel Kilbride searched the diaries, letters, published accounts, and guidebooks written between the late colonial period and the Civil War. His sources are written by people who, while prominent in their own time, are largely obscure today, making this account fresh and unusual. Exposure to the Old World generated varied and contradictory concepts of American nationality. Travelers often had diverse perspectives because of their region of origin, race, gender, and class. Americans in Europe struggled with the tension between defining the United States as a distinct civilization and situating it within a wider world. Kilbride describes how these travelers defined themselves while they observed the politics, economy, morals, manners, and customs of Europeans. He locates an increasingly articulate and refined sense of simplicity and virtue among these visitors and a gradual disappearance of their feelings of awe and inferiority.

Book Europe s 21st Century Challenge

Download or read book Europe s 21st Century Challenge written by Didier Bigo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-22 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the final results of the CHALLENGE research project (The Changing Landscape of European Liberty and Security) - a five-year project funded by the Sixth Framework Programme of DG Research of the European Commission. The book critically appraises the liberties of citizens and others within the EU, and the different ways in which they are affected by the proliferation of discourses, practices and norms of insecurity enacted in the name of collective and individual safety. It analyses from an interdisciplinary perspective the impacts of new techniques of surveillance and control on the liberty and security of the citizen. The book studies illiberal practices of liberal regimes in the field of security, and the relationship between the internal and external effects of these practices in an increasingly interconnected world, as well as the effects in relation to the place of the EU in world politics.

Book Living with Disfigurement in Early Medieval Europe

Download or read book Living with Disfigurement in Early Medieval Europe written by Patricia Skinner and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-12-21 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is open access under a CC-BY 4.0 license. This book examines social and medical responses to the disfigured face in early medieval Europe, arguing that the study of head and facial injuries can offer a new contribution to the history of early medieval medicine and culture, as well as exploring the language of violence and social interactions. Despite the prevalence of warfare and conflict in early medieval society, and a veritable industry of medieval historians studying it, there has in fact been very little attention paid to the subject of head wounds and facial damage in the course of war and/or punitive justice. The impact of acquired disfigurement —for the individual, and for her or his family and community—is barely registered, and only recently has there been any attempt to explore the question of how damaged tissue and bone might be treated medically or surgically. In the wake of new work on disability and the emotions in the medieval period, this study documents how acquired disfigurement is recorded across different geographical and chronological contexts in the period.
