Book A History of Indo European Verb Morphology

Download or read book A History of Indo European Verb Morphology written by Kenneth Shields and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1992-07-27 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the origin and evolution of important grammatical categories of the Indo-European verb, including the markers of person, tense, number, aspect, and mood. Its central thesis is that many of these markers can be traced to original deictic particles which were incorporated into verbal structures in order to indicate the 'hic and nunc' and various degrees of remoteness from the 'hic and nunc'. The alterations to which these deictic elements were subject are viewed here in the context of an Indo-European language very different from Brugmannian Indo-European, many features of which, it is argued, appeared only in the period of dialectal development. This book challenges numerous traditional proposals about the Indo-European verb; all reconstructions contained in it are firmly based on extant data and are consonant with established principles of linguistic change.

Book The Acquisition of Derivational Morphology

Download or read book The Acquisition of Derivational Morphology written by Veronika Mattes and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers the first systematic study of the early phases in the acquisition of derivational morphology from a cross-linguistic and typological perspective. It presents ten empirical longitudinal studies in genealogically and typologically diverse languages (Indo-European, Finno-Ugric, Altaic) with different degrees of derivational complexity. Data collection, analysis and systematic comparison between child speech and parental child-directed speech are strictly parallel across the chapters. In order to identify the productivity of a derivational pattern, signalling the crucial developmental stage in its acquisition, the concept of the mini-paradigm criterion was applied. Similar developmental processes can be observed in all children, independent of the language they acquire, but the children’s courses of development also show obvious typological differences. This points towards an important impact of the structural properties of the specific language on emergence, use and the early course of development of derivational patterns.

Book Atlas of the Morphology of the Human Cerebral Cortex on the Average MNI Brain

Download or read book Atlas of the Morphology of the Human Cerebral Cortex on the Average MNI Brain written by Michael Petrides and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2018-12-13 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atlas of the Morphology of the Human Cerebral Cortex on the Average MNI Brain provides a comprehensive identification of the sulci and gyri of the human brain on a series of coronal sections of the average MNI brain and identifies the likely location of the cytoarchitectonic areas of the cerebral cortex. Presentation in MNI Stereotaxic Space enables the atlas to serve as a useful working tool for structural/functional neuroimagers attempting to identify the sulcus or gyrus and the likely cytoarchitectonic area within which a functional activation or a structural change has occurred. A brief introductory section discusses the history and current state of studies of the sulcal and gyral morphology and cytoarchitecture of the human cerebral cortex. - Identifies all sulci and gyri of both hemispheres of the average MNI brain (rather than those of a single brain with its individual peculiarities) so that the average surface morphology of the human cerebral cortex is clearly revealed - Presents the likely location of architectonic areas on the average MNI brain so that researchers can report their findings in a manner that is readily translatable from laboratory to laboratory - Offers succinct commentary on the relation of sulci and gyri to architectonic areas, which will be useful to those looking to identify the cortical area within which functional or structural changes occurred - Offers succinct commentaries on the diversity of names often used to refer to the exact same area that will be useful to those struggling to navigate the often confusing cerebral cortex nomenclature

Book Vertebrate Sound Production and Acoustic Communication

Download or read book Vertebrate Sound Production and Acoustic Communication written by Roderick A. Suthers and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-27 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the fundamental principles of vocal production are well-understood, and are being increasingly applied by specialists to specific animal taxa, they stem originally from engineering research on the human voice. These origins create a double barrier to entry for biologists interested in understanding acoustic communication in their study species. The proposed volume aims to fill this gap, providing easy-to-understand overviews of the various relevant theories and techniques, and showing how these principles can be implemented in the study of all main vertebrate groups. The volume will have eleven chapters assembled from the world's leading researchers, at a level intelligible to a wide audience of biologists with no background in engineering or human voice science. Some will cover sound production in a particular vertebrate group; others will address a particular issue, such as vocal learning, across vertebrate taxa. The book will highlight what is known and how to implement useful techniques and methodologies, but will also summarize current gaps in the knowledge. It will serve both as a tutorial introduction for newcomers and a springboard for further research for all scientists interested in understanding animal acoustic signals.

Book Genetic and Dental Profiles of Orang Asli of Peninsular Malaysia Penerbit USM

Download or read book Genetic and Dental Profiles of Orang Asli of Peninsular Malaysia Penerbit USM written by Zafarina Zainuddin and published by Penerbit USM. This book was released on with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last few decades have witnessed extensive research on the Orang Asli population. However, until recently, there has been no proper compilation of scientific data on the Orang Asli, especially on their genetic and dental profiles. The Orang Asli of Peninsular Malaysia is among the oldest populations in the world and therefore knowledge on their genotype and phenotype is extremely precious, especially in providing insight into their evolutionary process and in helping mitigate potential challenges that they may face in the future. Research by various groups as compiled in this book suggests that the Orang Asli is indeed facing significant challenges for their survival - effects that resulted from changes in their lifestyle, environmental and socio-economical pressures, as well as inbreeding. These negative 'pressures' therefore need to be effectively addressed to ensure their survival. This book contains important information on the genetic and dental profiles of the Orang Asli that will be useful as background data for future research as well as to assist the relevant authorities to design and implement meaningful policies for the Orang Asli.
