Book European Financial Linkages

Download or read book European Financial Linkages written by International Monetary Fund and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We document external investment positions among European Union countries at the start of the financial crisis through the creation of a new database comprising bilateral external financial asset and liabilities, excluding reserve assets and derivatives. While there are some gaps in the data, the overall coverage of reported bilateral net international investment positions (IIPs) appears satisfactory. The dataset provides a richer picture of financial linkages, enabling us to map the financing of Euro area imbalances. Creditor and debtor positions vis-à-vis the rest of the EU have tended to increase between 2000 and 2008, with capital flowing largely from wealthier to catching-up economies. This has in particular resulted in an increased interdependency among Euro Area economies.

Book Financial Linkages and Sectoral Business Cycle Synchronization

Download or read book Financial Linkages and Sectoral Business Cycle Synchronization written by Hannes Boehm and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We analyze whether financial integration between countries leads to converging or diverging business cycles using a dynamic spatial model. Our model allows for contemporaneous spillovers of shocks to GDP growth between countries that are financially integrated and delivers a scalar measure of the spillover intensity at each point in time. For a financial network of ten European countries from 1996-2017, we find that the spillover effects are positive on average but much larger during periods of financial stress, pointing towards stronger business cycle synchronization. Dismantling GDP growth into value added growth of ten major industries, we observe that some sectors are strongly affected by positive spillovers (wholesale & retail trade, industrial production), others only to a weaker degree (agriculture, construction, finance), while more nationally influenced industries show no evidence for significant spillover effects (public administration, arts & entertainment, real estate).

Book Bilateral Financial Linkages and Global Imbalances

Download or read book Bilateral Financial Linkages and Global Imbalances written by Mr.Francesco Strobbe and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present a novel and comprehensive dataset of bilateral gross and net external positions in various financial instruments for the main advanced and emerging economies and regions, designed to improve our understanding of cross-border financial linkages. The data show no strong correspondence between country or region pairs with the largest gross versus net external positions, and the importance of international financial centers, including offshore centers, in intermediating financial flows. We also highlight some important data gaps in completing a network of cross-border holdings, related to the limited available information on the size and geographical pattern of external claims and liabilities of offshore centers, oil exporters, and other mostly emerging markets.

Book Linkages of Financial Groups in the European Union

Download or read book Linkages of Financial Groups in the European Union written by Ingrid Ulst and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2005-05-10 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Financial services industry has shown trends of increased consolidation across different types of financial institutions. This book focuses on the conglomeration of banking and insurance activities among financial institutions of the 15 old members of the European Union, and addresses the development and impact of conglomeration linkages between these fifteen and the ten new member states. Most of the large groups combining banking and insurance activities groups among the former member states of the European Union are often linked to the largest such institutions in the new member states, having created the linkages mainly through Merger & Acquisition Activities; with greater accent on the banking sector and lesser connections on insurance side. Financial conglomeration linkages between the EU-15 and the new member states highlight investment attractiveness of the new members, with the appeal of new markets that allow the presence of more participants. Both institution-specific and country-specific factors play role in conglomeration across the new member states.

Book Modeling with Macro Financial Linkages

Download or read book Modeling with Macro Financial Linkages written by Ms.Inci Ötker and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2009-06-01 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper develops a stylized, small, open economy macro model that incorporates an explicit and non-trivial role for financial intermediation. It illustrates how such a model could be used for policy analysis in an emerging market economy where policymakers are concerned about risks associated with rapid credit growth, financial dollarization, and foreign borrowing, while lacking traditional tools to effect monetary policy transmission, and hence could resort to more direct instruments, such as foreign exchange market intervention and regulatory and administrative measures. Calibrating the model to a stylized emerging European economy, the paper simulates real and financial sector implications of various external and policy-related shocks that could be used as input for monetary policy making.

Book Regional Financial Interlinkages and Financial Contagion Within Europe

Download or read book Regional Financial Interlinkages and Financial Contagion Within Europe written by Zsófia Árvai and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2009 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper focuses on financial interlinkages within Europe and potential contagion channeled through these interlinkages. It discusses the increased role of external financing as a source of funding for credit growth; analyzes potential channels of contagion through financial linkages; and assesses the magnitude of cross-border exposures between emerging and western European countries. Based on the stylized facts on these exposures, the paper provides simple indices of exposure to regional contagion that could help identify the likely pressure points and capture potential spillover effects and propagation channels of a regional shock originating from a given country.

Book Mapping Cross Border Financial Linkages A Supporting Case for Global Financial Safety Nets

Download or read book Mapping Cross Border Financial Linkages A Supporting Case for Global Financial Safety Nets written by International Monetary Fund and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2011-01-06 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper maps cross-border financial linkages and identifies factors that drive them, contributing to the discussion on the appropriate design of a global financial safety net (GFSN). It builds on previous staff work and complements the findings of the companion paper on the Analytics of Systemic Crises and the Role of Global Financial Safety Nets. This paper notes the growing roles of financial linkages and complexity in injecting latent instability into the global financial system, underscoring the value of a GFSN design that is effective in forestalling the risk that a localized liquidity shock propagates through the global financial network turning into a large-scale systemic crisis.

Book Europe and Global Imbalances

Download or read book Europe and Global Imbalances written by Philip R. Lane and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2007-06 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Europe in the aggregate is a not a major contributor to global current account imbalances, its trade and financial linkages with the rest of the world mean that it will still be affected by a shift in the current configuration of external deficits and surpluses. We assess the macroeconomic impact on Europe of global current account adjustment under alternative scenarios, emphasizing both trade and financial channels. Finally, we consider heterogeneous exposure across individual European economies to external adjustment shocks.

Book Financial Integration and Macrofinancial Linkages in Asia

Download or read book Financial Integration and Macrofinancial Linkages in Asia written by Asian Development Bank and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2020-10-01 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Asian financial landscape has grown more interconnected over the past 2 decades. Previous financial crises have shown how financial volatility can transmit rapidly across an interconnected financial network. Empirical analyses have shown, moreover, how financial volatility can reverberate across the macroeconomy. This report summarizes the lessons from past crises, reviews the evidence of the macrofinancial linkages and feedback effects of financial distress, and proposes policy considerations and coordinated responses to enhance financial stability and resilience.

Book Macrofinancial Linkages

Download or read book Macrofinancial Linkages written by Mr.Christopher W. Crowe and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2010-08-25 with total page 617 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Macrofinancial linkages have long been at the core of the IMF's mandate to oversee the stability of the global financial system. With the advent of the economic crisis, the Fund has drawn on this research in order to contribute to critical debates on the nature of appropriate policy responses at both the national and multilateral levels. The current juncture offers a good opportunity to take stock of this body of research by IMF staff and to share it with a wider audience, particularly since few collections have been published in this area. This volume brings together some of the best writing by IMF economists on macrofinancial issues, and highlights the issues and approaches that have guided IMF thinking in an area that makes up an increasingly important component of the IMF's overall remit. The chapters in the volume fit into three broad themes: financial crises and boom-bust cycles; financial integration, financial liberalization, and economic performance; and policy issues relating to macroeconomic policy and the corporate and financial sectors-including domestic and external financial liberalization.

Book Financial Shocks and the Macroeconomy

Download or read book Financial Shocks and the Macroeconomy written by Kirstin Hubrich and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper analyses the transmission of financial shocks to the macroeconomy. The role of macro-financial linkages is investigated from an empirical perspective for the euro area as a whole, for individual euro area member countries and for other EU and OECD countries. The following key economic questions are addressed: 1) Which financial shocks have the largest impact on output over the full sample on average? 2) Are financial developments leading real activity? 3) Is there heterogeneity or a common pattern in macro-financial linkages across the euro area and do these linkages vary over time? 4) Do cross-country spillovers matter? 5) Is the transmission of financial shocks different during episodes of high stress than it is in normal times, i.e. is there evidence of non-linearities? In summary, it is found that real asset prices are significant leading indicators of real activity whereas the latter leads loan developments. Furthermore, evidence is presented that macro-financial linkages are heterogeneous across countries - despite persistent commonalities - and time-varying. Moreover, they differ between euro area and other countries. Results also indicate that cross-country spillovers matter. Finally, important non-linearities in the transmission of financial shocks are documented, as the evidence suggests that the transmission differs in episodes of high stress compared with normal times.
