Book Private Equity Investments in Emerging Markets

Download or read book Private Equity Investments in Emerging Markets written by Benjamin Heckmann and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2009-08-31 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: 2,0, University of Münster (International Management), course: Seminar International Finance, language: English, abstract: The paper deals with Private Equity Investments in Emerging Markets. This asset class is associated with attractive opportunities and appropriate risk-adjusted returns. The Private Equity industry in Emerging Markets showed strong growth over the last few years – after a period of disappointment and unmet expectations. Private Equity is a primary source of equity for small and medium sized companies. It is associated with higher default risk but offers the opportunity to receive higher returns. One special characteristic is the provision of ‘smart money’, the integration of investment banking and management consultancy. The environment of Emerging Markets is challenging. The term refers to capital markets in developing countries with outstanding growth opportunities. 35 countries from Latin America, Central and Eastern Europe, Asia, Middle East and Africa belong to the group of Emerging Markets. These markets are characterised by weak legal institutions, political and economic risk, dysfunctional capital markets and a low standard of corpo-rate governance. The combination of the high risk asset class Private Equity with the high risk environment of Emerging Markets results in high risk investments. But the superior return op-portunities attract more and more investors. After a period of disappointment and setbacks – due to an inappropriate approach – at the beginning of the 21st century this asset class took off. Fundraising figures from 2003 to 2006 are increasing strongly and the investors expect the growth to continue. The macroeconomic environment, the legal framework and the quality of capital markets are the main determinants for Emerging Markets Private Equity. The introduction of good corporate governance is essential for the provision of a hospitable investment climate. If the legal framework is weak, efficient governance structures can serve as a substitute. Intensive due diligence, monitoring, involvement, networks, diversification and exiting are the key success factors for Private Equity firms engaging in Emerging Markets. With an appropriate adjustment of the strategy, risk can be mitigated and the investment is likely to be successful. Emerging Markets Private Equity can be beneficial for both the investors and the entrepreneurs. Especially small and medium sized enterprises and family-owned companies in Emerging Markets benefit from this source of equity while investors receive potential extraordinary returns and diversify their portfolio.

Book Study on Equity Investments in Europe

Download or read book Study on Equity Investments in Europe written by Sigurd Næss-Schmidt and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having a well-functioning risk capital market is crucial for innovation, economic growth and investments. However, the need for external risk capital very much depends on the concrete business model. Credit plus retained earnings will be sufficient to address the investment needs of many SMEs and small mid-caps. This secures the creditor a predictable repayment profile and return, whereas the borrower gets to keep the entire upside from the investment. With equity finance on the other hand, the investors are not guaranteed any return, but instead they buy into the potential future earnings of the company. As such, equity finance is well-suited for the few high-risk, high-return profile companies, which are ineligible for credit. This typically characterises innovative companies where high scale-up is possible. Such companies are often found within ICT, life science and technology sectors. Equity finance is more than just funding. Along with the capital investment often comes extensive coaching and value-added support from the equity investors whether they be business angels, or the investment teams and sector experts employed by the General Partners (GPs) in VC and PE constructions. The incentive here is obvious they own part of the company and thus have a clear motivation to accelerate its development and boost its growth potential. It requires knowledgeable external partners and investors that are actively involved in an entrepreneurial eco-system, ultimately helping to bring innovative companies to the market.

Book Raising Venture Capital Finance in Europe

Download or read book Raising Venture Capital Finance in Europe written by Keith Arundale and published by Kogan Page Publishers. This book was released on 2007-04-03 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: European private equity investment reached €47 billion in 2005, up 27% from 2004. Funds raised for private equity were €72 billion, up 250% on the previous year, both figures being all time highs. Raising Venture Capital Finance in Europe provides business owners, entrepreneurs and investors alike with a step-by-step approach to exploiting this market and funding new projects effectively. Written by Keith Arundale, an advisor and commentator on the European and US VC and private equity industry for over 20 years, the guide blends business experience with practical approaches to enable the reader to maximize the opportunities available. The book includes a series of real-life case studies from venture capitalists and entrepreneurs from around Europe, each with practical tips for successful venture capital finance raising. With forewords from Sir Paul Judge (Chairman, Enterprise Education Trust) and Patrick Sheehan (Chairman, Venture Capital Committee, European Private Equity and Venture Capital Association) the book begins with a brief introduction to the field, including an analysis of current trends and issues in the industry, and goes on to provide a detailed framework for an objective assessment of each business opportunity. The book looks at sources of finance and private equity, shows how to write a successful business plan, details the entire investment process, and considers the tax and legal issues involved. A particular feature of the book is that it looks at the topic from both sides - showing what the venture capitalist is looking for as well as detailing how an entrepreneur or business owner can make proposals attractive to those investors This means that the reader will be able to minimize time wasted on unnecessary activities and therefore develop investment approaches which are succinct, relevant, and give every chance of success.

Book Investment Styles in the European Equity Market

Download or read book Investment Styles in the European Equity Market written by Monica Billio and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Equity investment styles have been in use for many years in American financial markets. They have proven to be important reference points used in the creation of asset allocation strategies for mutual funds and to coordinate the monthly strategy with the daily stock selection. The formation of a large European stock market affords institutional investors the opportunity to introduce these strategies. In this paper, equity styles have been shown to exist in the European market and to have a significant contrasting tendency in terms of cumulative returns. In addition, many of the equity investment strategies based on portfolio re-balancing towards a determined style (short long overlay strategies) have been shown to have positive returns. To illustrate these results, portfolio styles have been firstly determined. This has been accomplished through the classification of the 561 stocks comprising the MSCI into 5 portfolios (quintiles) based on several fundamental indicators (Price to Book Value, Price to Earnings, Price to Cash Flow, Dividend Yield, Earnings Growth, Beta, Size and ROE). We have then calculated the return and turnover rate for each quintile andthe percentage of positive movements for each portfolio and for each style strategy.Another interesting aspect of this paper is the analysis of each portfolio style's return in relation to the principal macroeconomic and European macromarket variables. For each portfolio, estimates of the sensitivity coefficients (betas) have been calculated with respect to each economic variable. A significant contrast of figures has been revealed between the quot;valuequot; portfolio style (low P/E, low P/B, low P/CF, high DY) and the quot;growthquot; portfolio style (high ROE). The economic analysis of the portfolio has been preceded by a correlation analysis on all the economic variables considered significant for the European economy. Then, following recent literature, a multi-factor APT model with variable parameters has been estimated for each portfolio. Both the state space and the ECM forms have been utilized with GARCH disturbances in order to study the existing economic relationship between equity style and macroeconomic and macro-market variables.

This book was released on 2004-06-24 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wissenschaftliche Studie aus dem Jahr 2004 im Fachbereich BWL - Investition und Finanzierung, Note: keine, Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien (VWL (Doktoratsprogramm)), Veranstaltung: Intent Conference 2004 in Napoli, Italy, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: The specific aim of this paper is to offer suggestions and guidance on improving the effectiveness between the private and public sector to boost risk capital investment in R&D activities, presenting a series of recommendations in the chapter “Challenges facing the European Risk Capital Industry”, based on the latest report of policy makers in the EU (report of the European Commission) in 2003. The immediate background of the report was the dramatic change in the economic environment for private providers of risk capital, combined with rising concern for insufficient public risk capital measures in the European Union. This paper starts with the description of the important link between Risk Capital and R&D, followed by the analysis how private and public risk capital investments affect the business activity of SMEs and Entrepreneurs in Europe. After reviewing the important use of private risk capital instruments, the author summarizes major findings and explains which lessons have been learnt from the past to tackle the current risk capital funding gaps.

Book Value Creation of Private Equity

Download or read book Value Creation of Private Equity written by Kevin Elsäßer and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2018-01-11 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: 1,0, European Business School - International University Schloß Reichartshausen Oestrich-Winkel, language: English, abstract: Private equity companies are seen as high risk investment funds, trying to gain high returns on their investments in a period of around three to seven years. Even if the private equity industry has played an important role in growth or as an external financing source of established companies as well as newly-established companies, private equity investors are not seen as sustainable value creators. In various occasions, private equity funds are even declared as a greedy instrument to earn fast money. In order to analyse whether private equity companies create value in a sustainable way, this study compares the performance of private equity backed initial public offerings (IPOs) with non-private equity backed IPOs. Moreover, it analyses whether private equity backed IPOs outperform the market. This study evaluates the performance of private equity backed IPOs by performing two separate empirical analyses: one focusing on the UK private equity market - the largest private equity market in Europe - and one focusing on the entire European market. The research conducts a quantitative analysis of secondary data, more specifically by using stock prices of private equity backed firms, non-private equity backed firms and applicable benchmark market indices. Such data was obtained from multiple sources, such as the London Stock Exchange, Bloomberg and Yahoo Finance. In general, the study compares the performance of private equity backed IPOs with non-sponsor IPOs with regard to their price development and abnormal returns. The analysis is based on multiple independent analyses of each IPO. In order to provide a general understanding of this issue and to be able to interpret the research results, the paper discusses the theoretical framework and the findings of other authors. In recent decades, several authors have demonstrated their research on private equity based IPOs as well as the value creation of private equity firms. Based upon these, hypotheses are formulated, which are then subsequently tested using multiple research methods. In general, the study indicates that the majority of private equity firms do not create sustainable value. More than 50% of the analyzed private equity backed companies were not able to outperform the market benchmark indices. On average, private equity backed firms were able to significantly outperform the market in the UK. However, they were unable to perform equally well on a European level.

Book The Future of Investing

Download or read book The Future of Investing written by Chris Skinner and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2007-06-29 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID) is the biggest change programme Europe’s capital markets have ever attempted. It takes all the protection away from Europe’s Stock Exchanges and forces investment banks, brokers and dealers to guarantee best execution. The organisational, process and technology changes demanded by the MiFID are massive. In order to understand these challenges, industry commentator Chris Skinner has gathered the views of Europe’s leading figures in the MiFID community to discuss its implications. From an introduction from the European Business School and European Commission, through the views of leaders in the key constituencies of MiFID Connect and the MiFID Joint Working Group, through to organisations supporting the markets such as Reuters and SWIFT, this book provides a 360-degree perspective of the world of investing in Europe’s markets after the MiFID implementation. Anyone who has anything to do with dealing, trading and investing in European equities and instruments will find this book an essential guide to the markets now and into the future. With this book as their guide, readers will understand: • The key MiFID business issues • How to implement the directive • How it will affect the markets once it comes into force
