Download or read book European Economists of the Early 20th Century Studies of neglected thinkers of Belgium France The Netherlands and Scandinavia written by Warren J. Samuels and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 1998 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first of two volumes profiling economists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries who contributed to the discipline but whose names and works have been overshadowed by the giants who wrote major works and advised leaders. Of the 17 economists considered here, some worked within the mainstream that is now known as neoclassicism while others practiced economics in very different ways. The commissioned essays deepen the sense of the intellectual milieu from which dominant ideas rose and the paths that the ideas now accepted took to general acceptance, and also suggest directions that were not taken. The coverage extends to the interwar years. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the interrelations between Russian and European economics from the early 19th century to the present. Book excerpt: Business Cycles in Economic Thought underlines how, over the time span of two centuries, economic thought interacted with cycles in a continuous renewal of theories and rethinking of policies, whilst economic actions embedded themselves into past economic thought. This book argues that studying crises and periods of growth in different European countries will help to understand how different national, political and cultural traditions influenced the complex interaction of economic cycles and economic theorizing. The editors of this great volume bring together expert contributors consisting of economists, historians of economic thought and historians of economics, to analyse crises and theories of the nineteenth and the twentieth century. This is alongside a comprehensive outlook on the most relevant advances of economic theory in France, Germany and Italy, as well as coverage of non-European countries, such as the United States. Several of the highly prestigious Villa Vigoni Trilateral Conferences formed the background for the discussions in this book. This volume is of great interest to students and academics who study history of economic thought, political economy and macroeconomics.

Book In the Long Run We re All Dead

Download or read book In the Long Run We re All Dead written by Björn Frank and published by Haus Publishing. This book was released on 2023-08-12 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating and entertaining account of the lives of the most important economists of the past. Until the late nineteenth century, economics couldn’t be studied at the university level; the field was the domain of well-educated figures whose radical curiosity drew them to a discipline that was little understood and often ridiculed. In the Long Run We’re All Dead tells the story of one of those figures in each of its thirteen chapters. Each of these extraordinary lives is worthy of fiction, and the manner of their deaths, oddly, often illuminates their work. Björn Frank shows us how these economists developed the theories for which they became famous and explains those ideas—utilitarianism, social costs, the endowment effect, and others—with reference to the lives of their creators in an engaging, irreverent, even comic style. Frank also takes daring leaps into speculation, considering how the principles of these long-gone economists might be applied to problems of today and of the future.

Book Economists Lives

Download or read book Economists Lives written by E. Roy Weintraub and published by Annual Supplement to History o. This book was released on 2007 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays, a supplement to History of Political Economy, brings together prominent scholars from economics, sociology, literature, and history to examine the role of biography and autobiography in the history of economics. The first of its kind, this volume looks at the relevance of first-person accounts to narrative histories of economics. The essays consider both the potential and the limits of life writing, which has traditionally been used sparingly by historians of economics, and examine types of biographies, the relationship between autobiography and identity, and the writing of biography. Contributors to this collection question whether biography is essential to understanding the history of economic ideas and consider how autobiographical materials should be read and interpreted by historians. Articles consider the treatment of autobiographical materials such as conversations and testimonies, the construction of heroes and villains, the relationship between scientific biography and literary biography, and concerns related to living subjects. Several essays address the role of biography and autobiography in the study of economists such as F. A. Hayek, Harry Johnson, Alfred Marshall, John Maynard Keynes, Oskar Morgenstern, and François Quesnay, concluding with several accounts of the interconnection of the historians' projects with their own autobiographies. All 2007 subscribers to History of Political Economy will receive a copy of "Economists' Lives: Biography and Autobiography in the History of Economics" as part of their subscription. Book The Economic Development of Continental Europe 1780 1870

Download or read book The Economic Development of Continental Europe 1780 1870 written by Alan Milward and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Upon its initial publication in 1973 this was the first textbook to present a unified view and comprehensive treatment of the economic development of Europe from a continental rather than a British perspective. At the same time, it is more than mere textbook: it is an interpretive analysis of a wide range of research on the subject in many countries which explores the objective validity of earlier theories and provides an ideal starting point for further research into economic development and European history. The work deals mainly with Western Europe, but in principally studying both France and Germany up to 1870 the authors by no means neglect the smaller countries. Indeed, the work is unusual in dealing fully with the Scandinavian countries and others, such as Switzerland and Belgium. This is a reissue of the fully revised and corrected second edition of the work, first published in 1979.
