Book The Defence Industry in East Central Europe

Download or read book The Defence Industry in East Central Europe written by Judit Kiss and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1989-90 the collapse of state socialism and the end of the Cold War brought dramatic changes for the defence industries of East-Central Europe. Initially it seemed that the resources devoted to the Cold War confrontation might become available for investment in non-military economic and social progress. However, by 1994 this optimism had given way to recognition that the transformation would involve significant costs and could not be accomplished quickly. The Defence Industry in East-Central Europe charts the development of the industries of the Visegrad countries - Czechoslovakia and its successor states, the Czech Republic and Slovakia; Poland; and Hungary. In the first part, national case studies underline the different approaches to reform adopted in the individual countries. The second part uses unique information derived from extensive interviews at enterprises in each of the four countries to examine the transformation of industry from a producer perspective.

Book The Transatlantic Defense Industrial Base

Download or read book The Transatlantic Defense Industrial Base written by Terrence R. Guay and published by Strategic Studies Institute. This book was released on 2005 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph compares the post-Cold War restructuring of the defense industries in the United States and Europe with the aim of understanding the implications for the transatlantic industrial base. We argue that different processes of industrial restructuring and consolidation present obstacles to transatlantic initiatives, and that government policies and conflicting political visions exacerbate the opportunities for collaboration between the United States and Europe. We assess the extent to which the restructuring of the U.S. and European defense industrial bases has uprooted national champions and, assisted by global competition, provided an industrial foundation for more extensive transatlantic cooperation. We conclude by suggesting factors that will shape further restructuring and consolidation in the short- and medium term and making recommendations for assisting the development of a transatlantic, rather than bipolar, defense industrial base.

Book excerpt: The author examines the extent to which the European Union and its policies influence Europe's defence industry. He suggests that the end of the Cold War and economic globalization are major factors pushing defence industrial issues to the regional level. The book describes institutional struggles between the European Commission, Council and Parliament in this policy area. The interdisciplinary approach addresses political economy, institution building, European security and defence, transatlantic relations, industrial restructuring, and the influence of defence sector interest groups.

Book The European Union and National Defence Policy

Download or read book The European Union and National Defence Policy written by Jolyon Howorth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-08-18 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Filling a surprising gap in existing studies, this book addresses many of the unanswered questions surrounding the role of european integration in shaping national defence policy. The impressive array of contributors consider the pressures on state policy emanating from the process of integration. The book is divided into three distinct parts: * an outline of the tortuous history of attempts to link defence with European integration * a study of the four larger member states - France, Germany, Italy and the UK as well as a chapter on The Netherlands; * an analysis of the effects of the nuclear weapons and arms procurement policies. This, the second book in The State and the European Union series, sheds light on an increasingly important and topical aspect of contemporary European security and will be essential reading for those studying European Politics, Public Policy and International Relations.

Download or read book The Future of the Defence Industries in Central and Eastern Europe written by Ian Anthony and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1994 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report examines the defence industries in Central and Eastern Europe as they attempt to restructure in the wake of changes brought about by the end of the cold war and downward trends in both military expenditure and arms exports. Separate chapters examine the developing military doctrines in Central and Eastern Europe, the trend in military expenditure, the nature of the efforts to restructure the defence industries, the international dimensions of industrial restructuring and the role of arms exports. Finally, the book attempts to relate the on-going process of defence industrial restructuring into the context of an overall economic structural adjustment that is now underway in the countries under study.
