Book Renewable Energy Communities and the Low Carbon Energy Transition in Europe

Download or read book Renewable Energy Communities and the Low Carbon Energy Transition in Europe written by Frans H. J. M. Coenen and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-03 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume addresses renewable energy communities, and in particular renewable energy cooperatives (REScoops), in the context of the revised EU Renewables Directive. It provides a comprehensive account of the history and development of the renewable energy community movement in over six different countries of continental Europe. It addresses their visions, strategy, organisation, agency, and more particularly the challenges they encounter. This is of particular importance to gain more understanding into how renewable energy communities fare in domestic energy markets where they are confronted with regime institutions, structures and incumbents’ agency that tend to favour maintaining of the status quo while blocking attempts to empower and institutionalise renewable energy communities as market entrants having a disruptive, radical green and localist agenda. This volume will be an invaluable reference for academics and practitioners with an interest in social innovation in sustainable transitions, the role of community energy in energy markets, their agency, as well as an outlook to the impact that the EU Renewables Directive may have to change national legislation and policy frameworks to create a level playing field that is essentially more fair and beneficial to renewable energy communities.

Book Towards a Sustainable Northern European Housing Stock

Download or read book Towards a Sustainable Northern European Housing Stock written by L. Itard and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2009-04-15 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Never were energy use and security of energy supply as high on the international political agendas as they are now. There seems to be a consensus that energy savings and sustainable energy production must have a high priority. Because the energy use in the residential and non-residential sectors account for a large part of the total energy use, new programs are being developed in order to limit the consumption of energy in these sectors and a lot of attention is put into increasing the energy efficiency of the existing building stock. Towards a Sustainable Northern European Housing Stock is based on a search and inventory of data on the existing Northern-European building stock and related policy developments. In this book, the authors try to give a realistic image of what is really known about the current quality of the building stock, the type of renovation activities that are undertaken and the policies being currently implemented. Recommendations are also made on how to improve the present situation.

Book The EU s Target for Renewable Energy

Download or read book The EU s Target for Renewable Energy written by Great Britain. Parliament. House of Lords. European Union Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2008 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the 27th report from the European Union Committee (HLP 175-I, ISBN 9780104013656) and examines the European Union target for renewable energy. Known as the 20/20 package, the European Commission wishes to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20%, as well as increasing the proportion of final energy consumption from renewable sources to 20%, both by 2020. Each Member State will be given a national target based on their existing renewable generation, their GDP and a flat-increase for all. The Committee believes that achieving the 20% increase of energy via renewable resources will be extremely challenging, and states that further research is required in this area. Further, the Commission's objective of creating a standardised Guarantee of Origin (GoO), where Member States could meet part of their targets by counting energy generated in another country for which they have bought a GoO certificate, is seen by the Committee as potentially undermining efforts to increase renewable generation domestically. The starting point for the Government is a reduction of the absolute level of final energy consumption through energy efficiency and saving measures. Further the Government needs to commit more fully to increasing the level of renewable heat in the UK and should increase grants for microgeneration along with support to bring emerging technologies, such as wind power to a commercially viable state. The Committee also highlights the barriers of meeting its targets in respect of the access given to renewable generators to the electricity grid, and believes the generators should be allowed to connect ahead of grid capacity upgrades. The Committee believes that the 20/20 targets are unachievable unless the Government take quick and decisive action on all fronts, including large -scale generation, microgeneration and energy efficiency. Meeting the target will increase energy costs for consumers, but offers a way forward in moving away from the use of fossil fuels in the future.

Download or read book Energy Justice written by Darren McCauley and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-21 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book re-conceptualizes energy justice as a unifying agenda for scholars and practitioners working on the issues faced in the trilemna of energy security, poverty and climate change. McCauley argues that justice should be central to the rebalancing of the global energy system and also provides an assessment of the key injustices in our global energy systems of production and consumption. Energy Justice develops a new innovative analytical framework underpinned by principles of justice designed for investigating unfairness and inequalities in energy availability, accessibility and sustainability. It applies this framework to fossil fuel and alternative low carbon energy systems with reference to multiple case studies throughout the world. McCauley also presents an energy justice roadmap that inspires new solutions to the energy trilemna. This includes how we redistribute the benefits and burdens of energy developments, how to engage the new energy ‘prosumer’ and how to recognise the unrepresented. This book will appeal to academics and students interested in issues of security and justice within global energy decision-making.

Download or read book Solar Energy Applications to Dwellings written by Willeke Palz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objectives of the Modelling Sub-Group are to unify European research in the field of computer models, to provide the best simplified models in the Passive Solar Working Group's extensive European Passive Solar Handbook and to ensure that these simple models are easy to use for design purposes. It has defined the needs of the research program for a large model and has chosen the Scottish program ESP as a large simulation model to be used as a reference for the analysis of the simplified ones. Each participant has commissioned the chosen model on his own computer and run a very simple exercise, just to verify that the program works similarily on the different machines. The analysis of the large model is being brought on its different sections, such as : input, output, heat transfer, passive solar systems, etc. The group will run ESP using the same passive solar bulding data as inputted to simplified models to assess the sensitivity of the latter ones. It will report on the work needed for the next 4 year CEC research program.
