Book excerpt: Quality management systems are essential and should be maintained with the intent to continuously improve effectiveness and efficiency, enabling nuclear medicine to achieve the expectations of its quality policy, satisfy its customers and improve professionalism. The quality management (QM) audit methodology in nuclear medicine practice, introduced in this publication, is designed to be applied to a variety of economic circumstances. A key outcome is a culture of reviewing all processes of the clinical service for continuous improvement in nuclear medicine practice. Regular quality audits and assessments are vital for modern nuclear medicine services. More importantly, the entire QM and audit process has to be systematic, patient oriented and outcome based. The management of services should also take into account the diversity of nuclear medicine services around the world and multidisciplinary contributions. The latter include clinical, technical, radiopharmaceutical, medical physics and radiation safety procedures.

Book excerpt: QuADRANT is a European project on clinical audit of medical radiological procedures as mandated in the BSSD. QuADRANT has specific objectives - to provide an overview of European clinical audit implementation; identify good practices and resources; provide guidance and recommendations to improve clinical audit uptake; and, identify potential for European action on quality and safety in the three project disciplines, radiology, radiotherapy, nuclear medicine. Developments in infrastructure are required: national clinical audit bodies, overseeing audit participation, are recommended. National professional societies have a pivotal role by providing clinical expertise and access to professional networks. Resource allocation and increased national prioritisation of clinical audit is required. Other barriers to implementation include lack of staff time and expertise. Incentives for clinical audit participation are underutilised. Accreditation and certification systems can play an important role and should include assessment of clinical audit participation. Clinical audit should be embedded in healthcare professionals' education programmes. A more active role for patients in clinical audit practice and policy is recommended. Awareness of the BSSD requirements for clinical audit is variable. Work is needed to ensure regulatory inspections incorporate an assessment of clinical audit, which should extend to all clinics and specialties involved in patient exposure to ionising radiation.
