Book excerpt: John Castagno's Artists' Signatures and Monograms have become the standard reference source for galleries, museums, libraries, and collectors around the world. Whether used to identify, authenticate, or verify signatures and works of both well-known and little-known artists, Castagno's work has no equal. In the first volume of European Artists Signatures and Monograms, 1800-1990 (Scarecrow, 1990), Castagno provided identification for more than 4,800 artists' signatures, along with biographical information and reference sources. The second volume, published by Scarecrow in 2007, identified an additional 2,100 artists and featured 3,000 signature examples. This third volume features an additional 2,800 artists and signatures. In addition to the standard signature entries, the book features sections for monograms and initials, common surname signatures, alternative surname signatures, and illegible signatures. Less than five percent of the entries in this volume are listed in the original volumes--and these are included to provide additional information about the artists. The use of European Artists III: Signatures and Monograms From 1800, A Directory provides the researcher a reference tool not duplicated elsewhere--one that will save many hours of research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents and analyzes artistic interactions both within the Soviet bloc and with the West between 1945 and 1989. During the Cold War the exchange of artistic ideas and products united Europe?s avant-garde in a most remarkable way. Despite the Iron Curtain and national and political borders there existed a constant flow of artists, artworks, artistic ideas and practices. The geographic borders of these exchanges have yet to be clearly defined. How were networks, centers, peripheries (local, national and international), scales, and distances constructed? How did (neo)avant-garde tendencies relate with officially sanctioned socialist realism? The literature on the art of Eastern Europe provides a great deal of factual knowledge about a vast cultural space, but mostly through the prism of stereotypes and national preoccupations. By discussing artworks, studying the writings on art, observing artistic evolution and artists? strategies, as well as the influence of political authorities, art dealers and art critics, the essays in Art beyond Borders compose a transnational history of arts in the Soviet satellite countries in the post war period. ÿ

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After first studying in Cologne, Hans von Aachen moved to Italy in 1574 to further his studies. He toured Rome and Florence, eventually settling in Venice. Combining Flemish traditions and Italian innovation he developed a style of his own. Returning to Germany, he lived in Cologne and Munich as a painter of the nobility. In 1592 he was appointed official painter of Rudolph II, Holy Roman Emperor in Prague, finally moving to Prague in 1601, where he painted commissions from Emperor Rudolph II and his successor, Matthias I. The elegance, humour, and sensuality of his mythological and allegoric paintings continue to be a fascination. His religious presentations are symbolic of the constant change in a turbulent world. The Los Angeles Museum of Art (LACMA) numbers paintings from Hans von Aachen among its collection.

Book Asia in the Making of Europe Volume II

Download or read book Asia in the Making of Europe Volume II written by Donald F. Lach and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2010-01-15 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second volume in a series that traces, century by century, the role of Asia in the making of Europe. The rise to world dominance of the Western nations in modern times and the rapid industrial growth of the West, which outpaced the East in technical and military achievements, have led to a historical eclipse of the ancient and brilliant cultures of Asia. Historican Donald F. Lach, in his influential scholarly work, Asia in the Making of Europe, points out that an eclipse is never permanent, that this one was never total, and that there was a period in early modern times when Asia and Europe were close rivals in brilliance and mutual influence.

Book The Art of the Multitude

Download or read book The Art of the Multitude written by Jonathan Vickery and published by Campus Verlag. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Art and culture are marginalised from mainstream debates on democracy and society, particularly with the current turbulence in Europe and the global significance of a coherent European identity and sense of cultural unity. This book explores the power of participation in art works for the formation of public memory, for the commemoration of historical events, and for an urban landscape that articulates cultural identity and recognition. The public works of German conceptual artist Jochen Gerz are a fulcrum of our exploration, but the framework is more broadly the European experience of war, conflict, peace and reconciliation, with many other relevant works from the last 25 years in Europe under discussion. The common characteristic of art works under discussion is that people of different backgrounds are invited to participate, regardless of nationality, language, religion, political affiliation or class."

Book Globalizing East European Art Histories

Download or read book Globalizing East European Art Histories written by Beáta Hock and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-30 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection reassesses East-Central European art by offering transnational perspectives on its regional or national histories, while also inserting the region into contemporary discussions of global issues. Both in popular imagination and, to some degree, scholarly literature, East-Central Europe is persistently imagined as a hermetically isolated cultural landscape. This book restores the diverse ways in which East-Central European art has always been entangled with actors and institutions in the wider world. The contributors engage with empirically anchored and theoretically argued case studies from historical periods representing notable junctures of globalization: the early modern period, the age of Empires, the time of socialist rule and the global Cold War, and the most recent decades of postsocialism understood as a global condition.

Book The Total Work of Art in European Modernism

Download or read book The Total Work of Art in European Modernism written by David Roberts and published by Cornell University Press and Cornell University Library. This book was released on 2011-11-15 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking book David Roberts sets out to demonstrate the centrality of the total work of art to European modernism since the French Revolution. The total work of art is usually understood as the intention to reunite the arts into the one integrated whole, but it is also tied from the beginning to the desire to recover and renew the public function of art. The synthesis of the arts in the service of social and cultural regeneration was a particularly German dream, which made Wagner and Nietzsche the other center of aesthetic modernism alongside Baudelaire and Mallarmé. The history and theory of the total work of art pose a whole series of questions not only to aesthetic modernism and its utopias but also to the whole epoch from the French Revolution to the totalitarian revolutions of the twentieth century. The total work of art indicates the need to revisit key assumptions of modernism, such as the foregrounding of the autonomy and separation of the arts at the expense of the countertendencies to the reunion of the arts, and cuts across the neat equation of avant-gardism with progress and deconstructs the familiar left-right divide between revolution and reaction, the modern and the antimodern. Situated at the interface between art, religion, and politics, the total work of art invites us to rethink the relationship between art and religion and art and politics in European modernism. In a major departure from the existing literature David Roberts argues for twin lineages of the total work, a French revolutionary and a German aesthetic, which interrelate across the whole epoch of European modernism, culminating in the aesthetic and political radicalism of the avant-garde movements in response to the crisis of autonomous art and the accelerating political crisis of European societies from the 1890s forward.

Book Unified Patent Protection in Europe

Download or read book Unified Patent Protection in Europe written by Winfried Tilmann and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-07-04 with total page 3041 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The creation of the Unified Patent Court (UPC) is the most prominent change in the European legal landscape for the last four decades. This book explains how the new system works in practice and how to make the best use of its provisions. It offers readers an in-depth and comprehensive commentary on the legal mechanisms of the upcoming ratified European Patent Law, and advice on potential problems that users of the forthcoming regulations may face. The book first describes the creation of the Unified European Patent Law and how its four new legislative texts interact. The new legislative texts are then explained and commented on in detail, rule by rule, with diverse approaches and perspectives from a practitioner team comprising patent litigators, European patent attorneys, law professors and patent judges. The Commentary takes into account the practical needs of users of the new system on both the prosecution and enforcement sides, addressing substantive and procedural problems. This book is the most authoritative text on the Unitary Patent and Unified Patents Court, and an invaluable tool for practitioners in this rapidly developing area of law.
