Book Breaking Up Is Hard To Do Britain and Europe s Dysfunctional Relationship

Download or read book Breaking Up Is Hard To Do Britain and Europe s Dysfunctional Relationship written by Martin Howe and published by London Publishing Partnership. This book was released on 2016-03-07 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the noise of the debate about the EU, it is rare for fundamental questions to be asked. For example, for what purposes should we have international institutions at all? Does the EU meet those purposes and, if not, is reform possible? This book considers these questions. An international team of renowned authors looks at each area of economic policy in which the EU has an interest, as well as at the governing structures of the EU, and asks what, if anything, the EU should be doing. In most cases, this is then compared with the status quo and against the possibility of Brexit in order to help the reader make a judgement, in each policy area, about which would be the best direction for Britain to take. As well as providing a fine contribution to the Brexit debate, the authors of this book provide a framework for evaluating the results of renegotiation together with a long-term programme for reform. The usefulness of this timely book will long outlive the referendum debate. The book asks – and answers – the fundamental questions that are rarely considered by the political classes.

Book Fixing the EU Intelligence Crisis

Download or read book Fixing the EU Intelligence Crisis written by Mūsá K̲h̲ān Jalālzaʼī and published by Algora Publishing. This book was released on 2016 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The epidemic of wars and military clashes from Syria to Yemen, the rising powers of China and Russia, and the turbulence in Pakistan, Central Asia and North Africa all underscore the urgent need for a highly professional intelligence agency within the European Union and between the EU and the UK in particular. However, the author shows that although the European Union introduced its common security policy more than two decades ago, EU member states mistrust each other and have failed to develop and fully integrate professional measures for intelligence-sharing to reduce security risks and the challenges of domestic radicalization and extremism. This book is a critical analysis of the poor state of intelligence sharing in the West. At the law enforcement level, and intelligence surveillance cooperation of PRISM, TEMPORA, UPSTREAM, ECHELON, NSA and Five-Eye intelligence alliance with the EU member states. Most of the current intelligence problems within the European Union, whether they relate to predicting surprise attacks, the politicization of intelligence, or questions of ethics and privacy are old conundrums. It is hard to escape the feeling that closer attention to obvious lessons from the past would have assisted European Union intelligence sharing in avoiding the recent attacks in Paris and Brussels.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A quiet revolution has been occurring in post-World War II Europe. A world power has emerged across the Atlantic that is recrafting the rules for how a modern society should provide economic security, environmental sustainability, and global stability. In Europe's Promise, Steven Hill explains Europe's bold new vision. For a decade Hill traveled widely to understand this uniquely European way of life. He shatters myths and shows how Europe's leadership manifests in five major areas: economic strength, with Europe now the world's wealthiest trading bloc, nearly as large as the U.S. and China combined; the best health care and other workfare supports for families and individuals; widespread use of renewable energy technologies and conservation; the world's most advanced democracies; and regional networks of trade, foreign aid, and investment that link one-third of the world to the European Union. Europe's Promise masterfully conveys how Europe has taken the lead in this make-or-break century challenged by a worldwide economic crisis and global warming.

Download or read book European Society written by William Outhwaite and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-05-02 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does it make sense to speak of a European society, above and beyond its component states and regions? In this major new book William Outhwaite argues that it does. He goes beyond the study of individual states and specific regions of Europe to examine the changing contours of the continent as a whole, at a time when Europe is beginning to look and act more like a single entity. In what we have come to call Europe there developed distinctive forms of political, economic, and more broadly social organisation – many of course building on elements drawn from more advanced civilisations elsewhere in the world. During the centuries of European dominance these forms were often exported to other world regions, where the export versions often surpassed the original ones. In the present century many features of European life remain distinctive: the European welfare or social model, a substantially secularised culture, and particular forms of democratic politics and of the relations between politics and the economy. This book provides a concise overview and analysis of these features which continue to make Europe a relatively distinctive region of global modernity. The book will become a key text for students taking courses on contemporary Europe, whether these are in departments of politics, sociology, literature or European Studies. It will also be of great interest to anyone living in, or concerned with, Europe today.

Book European Competition Law Annual 1998

Download or read book European Competition Law Annual 1998 written by Claus-Dieter Ehlermann and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2000-07-30 with total page 852 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1998 Volume on the regulation of communications markets is the third in a successful series of European Competition Law Annuals, founded upon open dialogue between technical experts, market analysts and legal practitioners. Gathering together academic papers and edited transcripts of expert discussions, it offers readers a lively and informed insight into the topical debate of whether governments, or the European Union, should intervene to prevent powerful firms from abusing their control of critical 'gateways' between consumers and communication information services. The Volume examines the technical and market evolutions that have allowed the development of single communications networks, which offer consumers a variety of telephone, audio-visual and computer data services. In an era of market liberalisation, the editors and contributors ask how private ownership of such communications networks may be reconciled with the need to ensure consumers easy access to the services that underpin our, so-called, 'information society'.
