Book The Food Industries of Europe in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries

Download or read book The Food Industries of Europe in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries written by Professor Alain Drouard and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-08-28 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The industrialization of food preservation and processing has been a dramatic development across Europe during modern times. This book sets out its story from the beginning of the nineteenth century when preservation of food from one harvest to another was essential to prevent hunger and even famine. Population growth and urbanization depended upon a break out from the ‘biological ancien regime’ in which hunger was an ever-present threat. The application of mass production techniques by the food industries was essential to the modernization of Europe. From the mid-nineteenth century the development of food industries followed a marked regional pattern. After an initial growth in north-west Europe, the spread towards south-east Europe was slowed by social, cultural and political constraints. This was notable in the post-Second World War era. The picture of change in this volume is presented by case studies of countries ranging from the United Kingdom in the west to Romania in the east. All illustrate the role of food industries in creating new products that expanded the traditional cereal-based diet of pre-industrial Europe. Industrially preserved and processed foods provided new flavours and appetizing novelties which led to brand names recognized by consumers everywhere. Product marketing and advertising became fundamental to modern food retailing so that Europe’s largest food producers, Danone, Nestlé and Unilever, are numbered amongst the world’s biggest companies.

This volume presents an important step forward in that it brings together eight internationally known social historians from Europe and Israel, each of whom offer an overview of some key themes in European history during the last two centuries. While dealing with the great changes of this period, the authors reveal the commonalities that link European societies together but also important differences at a national level.

Book European Imperialism in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries

Download or read book European Imperialism in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries written by Woodruff D. Smith and published by Chicago : Nelson-Hall. This book was released on 1982 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a small book on a very large subject. It is written for the general reader and for students who want an overview of modern European imperialism and an indication of some of the major issues with which historians of imperialism are currently concerned. Obviously, such a book cannot go into detail on any aspect of the subject. I have attempted wherever possible to use particular cases of imperialism to represent larger phenomena that occurred in many different places and at different times. I have also included references to important works on the subjects discussed in each section of the book; preference has been given to recently published studies and to those in English which are most likely to be available to the reader. Although the book is not purely a narrative and is organized around a number of theses, the presentation of the theses is necessarily abbreviated and the support for them incomplete. They should be considered as means of structuring the material; fuller exposition must awaith future publications. - Preface.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A core introductory textbook that provides students with an overview of the key issues in Europe's 'long nineteenth century', from the French Revolution in 1789 until the outbreak of the First World War in 1914. Telling the story of how Europeans entered politics in the fiery trials of revolution and industrialization, the text opens with the French Revolution, passes through the crucible of the 1848 Revolutions and ends with the emergence of mass movements - socialist, revolutionary, nationalist and authoritarian - which anticipated those of the twentieth century. This is an ideal text for modules on Modern European History or Nineteenth-Century Europe which may be offered at all levels of an undergraduate History or European Studies degree. In addition it is a crucial resource for students who may be studying nineteenth-century Europe for the first time as part of a taught postgraduate degree in Modern History or European Studies.
