Book Restructuring of Arms Production in Western Europe

Download or read book Restructuring of Arms Production in Western Europe written by Stockholm International Peace Research Institute and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1992 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Profound changes are occurring in the structure of arms production in Western Europe. Concentration is increasing at a fast pace. Small producers are disappearing and even large ones are opting out of the market. The various national arms industries, long operating in protective environments, are rapidly internationalizing. Three factors combine to bring about this change: East-West detente, the creation of the Single European Market, and the constant pressure of increasingly complex technology. In this book experts describe how the framework for producing arms in Western Europe is altered, and how various actors--firms, governments, and trade unions--are adapting to the new situation. The book presents detailed analyses of all the arms-producing countries in Western Europe. In addition to describing recent changes, the authors speculate on the implications of these for the balance of power in Western Europe, the relations between Western Europe and the United States, arms exports to the Third World, and problems of converting from military to civilian production. The appendices include the SIPRI list of the 50 largest arms-producing companies in Western Europe; data on mergers and acquisitions, procurement expenditure, and exports of major weapons; selections from treaties and other official documents relevant to current and future regulation of West European arms production; and a select bibliography.

Book European Union Trade Politics and Development

Download or read book European Union Trade Politics and Development written by Gerrit Faber and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-05-07 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ‘Everything But Arms’ (EBA) regulation of the European Union (EU) has been hailed as a groundbreaking initiative for developing countries. Since 2001 EBA grants almost completely liberalized access to the European market for products from the least-developed countries (LDCs). It quickly became the most symbolic European trade initiative towards the Third World since the first Lomé Convention in the 1970s. Given its central position in EU discourse and its continuing relevance for the European and international trade agenda, this book attempts to present a thorough analysis of EBA. ‘European Union Trade Politics and Development’ contains contributions from a diverse range of scholars who collectively present a comprehensive picture of EBA. This volume also contains a broader analysis of EU trade politics towards the South, focusing on agricultural policy reform, Europe’s evolving relationship with ACP countries (ex-colonies from Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific), it links EBA with Europe’s negotiating position within the World Trade Organization. Contributions to this volume also consider the continuing negotiation leverage of EBA within the Doha Development Agenda, make comparisons with United States trade policy vis-à-vis the LDCs, and focus on the economic effectiveness of EBA in terms of its stated objectives as well as on the institutional skirmishing within the EU.

Download or read book Importing the European Army written by David B. Ralston and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1996-06 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a study that extends well beyond military history, David B. Ralston documents the ways in which five different countries—Russia, the Ottoman Empire, Egypt, China, and Japan—refashioned their armed forces along European lines during the three centuries after 1600. The appropriation of Western military institutions in countries outside of Europe was, Ralston argues, the major force driving these countries to adopt European administrative, economic, and cultural modes. Following the same format in his discussion of each country, Ralston makes this central theme in world history easily accessible to students while offering scholars a sophisticated understanding of the exact nature of the changes brought about by Europeanizing military reforms. David B. Ralston, associate professor of history at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, is the author of The Army of the Republic.

Book At Arms Length

  • Author : Terrence R. Guay
  • Publisher : Palgrave Macmillan
  • Release : 1998
  • ISBN : 9780312213183
  • Pages : 219 pages

Download or read book At Arms Length written by Terrence R. Guay and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 1998 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Members of the European Union are reluctant to cede their sovereignty over the production and trade of arms, yet there are several factors suggesting that defense industrial restructuring and related government policies must move from the national to the regional level. These factors include the post-Cold War political environment, international competition in the armaments industry (particularly from American companies), lobbying efforts by some European defense firms and interest groups, attempts by the European commission and Parliament to broaden the EU's policy-making agenda, and the integrative forces unleashed by the Single European Act and Maastricht Treaty. This book explains the evolution of the Arm's length relationship between the EU and Europe's relationship between the EU and Europe's defense industry by describing the development of the institution's powers in this area and the forces facilitating and impeding their expansion.
