Book excerpt: Excerpt from Europa's Fairy Book But while I have attempted thus to restore the original substance of the European F olk-tales, I have ever had in mind that the particular form in which they are to appear is to attract English speaking children. I have, therefore, utilized the experience I had some years ago in collecting and retelling the Fairy Tales of the English F olk-lore field (english Fairy Tales, More English Fairy Tales), in order to tell these new tales in the way which English-speaking children have abundantly shown they enjoy. In other words, while the plot and incidents are common form throughout Europe, the manner in which I have told the stories is, so far as I have been able to imitate it, that of the English story-teller. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Europa's Fairy Book My Dear Little Peggy: - Many, many, many years ago I wrote a book for your Mummey - when she was my little May - telling the fairy tales which the little boys and girls of England used to hear from their mummeys, who had heard them from their mummeys years and years and years before. My friend Mr. Batten made such pretty pictures for it - but of course you know the book - it has "Tom, Tit, Tot" and "The little old woman that went to market," and all those tales you like. Now I have been making a fairy-tale book for your own self, and here it is. This time I have told again the fairy tales that all the mummeys of Europe have been telling their little Peggys, Oh for ever so many years! They must have liked them because they have spread from Germany to Russia, from Italy to France, from Holland to Scotland, and from England to Norway, and from every country in Europe that you will read about in your geography to every other one. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lilac Fairy Book My part has been that of Adam, according to Mark Twain, in the Garden of Eden. Eve worked, Adam superintended. I also superintend. I find out where the stories are, and advise, and, in short, superintend. I do not write the stories out of my own head. The reputa tion of having written all the fairy books (an European reputation in nurseries and the United States of America) is the burden of an honour unto which I was not born.' It weighs upon and is killing me, as the general fash of being the wife of the Lord of Bur leigh, Burleigh House by Stamford Town, was too much for the village maiden espoused by that peer. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Crimson Fairy Book Each Fairy Book demands a preface from the Editor, and these introductions are inevitably both monotonous and unavailing. A sense of literary honesty compels the Editor to keep repeating that he is the Editor, and not the author of the Fairy Tales, just as a distinguished man Of science is only the editor, not the Author Of Nature. Like nature, popular tales are too vast to be the 'creation Of a single modern mind. The Editor's business is to hunt for collections Of these stories told by peasant Or savage grandmothers in many climes, from New Caledonia to Zululand; from the frozen snows of the Polar regions to Greece, or Spain, or Italy, or far Lochaber. When the tales are found they are adapted to the needs Of British children by various hands, the Editor doing little beyond guarding the interests of propriety, and toning down to mild reproofs the tortures inflicted on Wicked stepmothers, and other naughty characters. Book The Swedish Fairy Book Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Swedish Fairy Book Classic Reprint written by Clara Stroebe and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Swedish Fairy Book The following volume of Swedish fairy-tales represents a careful choice, after the best original sources, of those examples of their kind which not only appeared most colorful and entertaining, but also most racially Swedish in their flavor. For the fairy-tales of each of the three Scandinavian countries, Sweden, Denmark and Norway, have a distinct local color of their own. The wealth of material available has made it possible to give due representation to most types of fairy-tales, from the stories of older origin, the tales of giant, troll, and werewolf, to such delightful tales as "Lasse, My Thrall," and "The Princess and the Glass Mountain," colored with the rich and ornate stylistic garb of medieval chivalric poesy. There has been no attempt to "rewrite" these charming folk- and fairy-tales in the translation. They have been faithfully narrated in the simple, naive manner which their traditional rendering demands. And this is one reason, perhaps, why they should appeal to young American readers - for young America by instinct takes kindly to that which is straightforward and sincere, in the realm of fairy-tale as in life itself. Book EUROPA S FAIRY BOOK 25 Illustrated Popular European Fairy Tales

This book was released on 2018-10-04 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Herein you will find 25 of Europe’s finest and most popular fairy tales. This was the sixth and last time that the famous folklorist Joseph Jacobs teamed up with the equally famous illustrator John D. Batten to produce yet another volume of exquisite fairy tales. Not only exquisitely told, but also exquisitely illustrated with 48 BnW illustrations. Created especially for his granddaughter, Peggy, here you will find the tales like: Snowhite, Beauty and the Beast, The Cinder-Maid, All Change, The King Of The Fishes, Scissors, Reynard And Bruin, The Dancing Water, The Singing Apple And The Speaking Bird, The Earl Of Cattenborough, The Unseen Bridegroom, The Master-Maid and many more. In this volume Jacobs brought together these well-known Folk-Tales of Europe, retold in such a way as to bring out the original form from which all the variants were derived. So if the tales herein seem a little different to the tales you remember, it’s because these have been retranslated with more of the original has been retained, with regional and national variations being kept to an absolute minimum. This may lead to children crying out "That was not the way you told us before." That’s because these tales are closer to the originals than previously published. In explanation, Jacobs has included sixty eight pages of explanatory notes detailing his methodology and the differences. YESTERDAY'S BOOKS FOR TODAY'S CHARITIES 10% of the profit from the sale of this book will be donated to charities.

Book Jane Eyre s Fairytale Legacy at Home and Abroad

Download or read book Jane Eyre s Fairytale Legacy at Home and Abroad written by Abigail Heiniger and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-02 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring the literary microcosm inspired by Brontë's debut novel, Jane Eyre's Fairytale Legacy at Home and Abroad focuses on the nationalistic stakes of the mythic and fairytale paradigms that were incorporated into the heroic female bildungsroman tradition. Jane Eyre, Abigail Heiniger argues, is a heroic changeling indebted to the regional, pre-Victorian fairy lore Charlotte Brontë heard and read in Haworth, an influence that Brontë repudiates in her last novel, Villette. While this heroic figure inspired a range of female writers on both sides of the Atlantic, Heiniger suggests that the regional aspects of the changeling were especially attractive to North American writers such as Susan Warner and L.M. Montgomery who responded to Jane Eyre as part of the Cinderella tradition. Heiniger contrasts the reactions of these white women writers with that of Hannah Crafts, whose Jane Eyre-influenced The Bondwoman's Narrative rejects the Cinderella model. Instead, Heiniger shows, Crafts creates a heroic female bildungsroman that critiques fairytale narratives from the viewpoint of the obscure, oppressed workers who remain forever outside the tales of wonder produced for middle-class consumption. Heiniger concludes by demonstrating how Brontë's middle-class American readers projected the self-rise ethic onto Jane Eyre, miring the novel in nineteenth-century narratives of American identity formation.

Book Bogowie A Study of Eastern Europe s Ancient Gods

Download or read book Bogowie A Study of Eastern Europe s Ancient Gods written by T.D. Kokoszka and published by John Hunt Publishing. This book was released on 2023-08-25 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: T.D. Kokoszka grew up in Texas with a Jewish mother and a Polish-American father. While he was aware of roots going back to Eastern Europe from both families, he found it hard to learn very much about them. He knew that Polish people would whack one another with palm leaves around Easter, and he knew that his great-grandmother purportedly believed in forest spirits known as borowy. However, it wasn't until he was in his teens that he became vaguely aware of an ancient people known as the Slavs who gave rise to the Polish, Ukrainian, Russian, Serbian, Bulgarian, Slovakian, Slovene, and Czech languages. It quickly became clear to him that this was a family of cultures currently under-represented in popular culture, and even in western scholarship. Not simply a regurgitation of scholarship from the Soviet period - and presenting new analyses by using previously neglected resources - Bogowie: A Study of Eastern Europe's Ancient Gods offers one of the most painstaking scholarly reconstructions of Slavic paganism. These new resources include not only an overview of folklore from many different Slavic countries but also comparisons with Ossetian culture and Mordvin culture, as well as a series of Slavic folktales that Kokoszka analyzes in depth, often making the case that the narratives involved are mythological and shockingly ancient. Readers will recognize many European folktale types and possibly learn to look at these folktales differently after reading this book.
