Book Anti liberal Europe

    Book Details:
  • Author : Dieter Gosewinkel
  • Publisher : Berghahn Books
  • Release : 2015
  • ISBN : 1782384251
  • Pages : 210 pages

Download or read book Anti liberal Europe written by Dieter Gosewinkel and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2015 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of modern Europe is often presented with the hindsight of present-day European integration, which was a genuinely liberal project based on political and economic freedom. Many other visions for Europe developed in the 20th century, however, were based on an idea of community rooted in pre-modern religious ideas, cultural or ethnic homogeneity, or even in coercion and violence. They frequently rejected the idea of modernity or reinterpreted it in an antiliberal manner. Anti-liberal Europe examines these visions, including those of anti-modernist Catholics, conservatives, extreme rightists as well as communists, arguing that antiliberal concepts in 20th-century Europe were not the counterpart to, but instead part of the process of European integration.

Book Ethnicity Nationalism and the European Cold War

Download or read book Ethnicity Nationalism and the European Cold War written by Robert Knight and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-04-26 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book questions the prevalent assumption that ethnicity and nationalist politics had nothing to do with the Cold War and that, far from being 'frozen' until the fall of communism, they remained central to the conflict in Europe. Leading scholars bring their understanding of particular regions to bear on the wider issue of why ethnic explanations were written out of the discourse and whether this was a failure on the part of Western observers. This in turn has led to an overly simple understanding of power flowing downwards, from superpower to nation state and from state to society. Engaging with key thinkers such as Gaddis, Moynihan and Adam Roberts this collection ultimately allows such speculation to be replaced by historical research and bridges the gap between 'high politics' and ethnic concerns.

Book Hidden Minorities

Download or read book Hidden Minorities written by Christian Promitzer and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2009 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book asks why several ethnic and linguistic groups in Central Europe and the Balkans have not yet been legally recognized as national minorities. Some of these hidden minorities have not developed an intellectual elite that can visibly present their identity and claims to the majority population. Other groups are deliberately concealing their existence and language for reasons of self-protection. The chapters in this volume address the everyday mechanisms of hiding and being hidden in the transition zone of these two European regions.

Book Mandating Identity

    Book Details:
  • Author : Eniko Horvath
  • Publisher : Kluwer Law International B.V.
  • Release : 2008-02-29
  • ISBN : 9041130748
  • Pages : 414 pages

Download or read book Mandating Identity written by Eniko Horvath and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2008-02-29 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this original and insightful analysis, Enikő Horváth focuses on three processes of legal evolution in Europe that affect the meaning of membership and individual identity: • the increasing salience of supranational ‘culture’ and rights; • ‘kinship’ legislation privileging non-nationals with linguistic, cultural, and ethnic ties to a given state; and • the emergence of plural nationality as an acceptable (and even welcome) phenomenon. The author’s treatment is notable for its informed appreciation of both the content of relevant European and national laws and the ways in which these laws are embedded in particular social and political frameworks. In addition to extending the legal theory on citizenship and nationality, the analysis draws on sociology, social psychology, and political theory to anchor its insights and recommendations. After two in-depth chapters introducing the complexities of the subject matter, three distinct but interwoven chapters show how each of the three processes has unfolded in a given context, offer detailed explanations and suggestions as to why each development has occurred in the manner that it has, and discuss the legal, political, and sociological issues raised by the particular development. A comprehensive reference section with extensive lists of laws, cases, and scholarship concludes the volume.

Book The EU The Liberal Empire

Download or read book The EU The Liberal Empire written by Harry Cottam and published by ShieldCrest. This book was released on 2020-04-23 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guy Verhofstadt, a leading Belgian MEP and enthusiast for the EU, has described it as a “liberal empire.” In his book, Harry asks whether, and to what extent this is true, and, if it is an empire, of what and for whom? With any organisation, however big and altruistic its stated principles and intentions might be, the author believes there is always someone running it behind the scenes and and he has concluded that one country, Germany, is using the EU as a fig-leaf to hide and legitimise its domination of the rest of Europe. In his book, Harry Cottam examines whether or not the EU is a liberal empire or designed to be controlled by the few and sets out his research which formed his belief and explains in detail how it has been achieved.

Book In the footsteps of the Rusyns in Europe Ukraine Slovakia Serbia Poland and Hungary

Download or read book In the footsteps of the Rusyns in Europe Ukraine Slovakia Serbia Poland and Hungary written by Petr Kokaisl, Andrea Štolfová, Pavla Fajfrlíková, Veronika Němcová, Jana Zychová, Irena Cejpová et al. and published by NOSTALGIE Praha. This book was released on 2023-01-11 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this monograph is to present the current situation of Rusyns in those European countries where, according to official or estimated statistics, their number is the highest - Ukraine, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary and Serbia. In presenting the situation of the Rusyn population in these countries, an attempt has been made to indicate the number of Rusyns in the countries under study and at the same time to point out the problems of obtaining accurate data on Rusyns. Another aim of the research was to find out what the main elements of Rusyn ethnic identity are - here, regardless of geographical differences, religious affiliation or Byzantine rite (Catholic or Orthodox) stood out in the first place. The research also focused on the use of the Rusyn language and changes in its status, the possibilities of teaching the Rusyn language and the interest in teaching it among the Rusyns themselves. In addition to these two main aspects of Rusyn identity, other key elements of Rusyn material and non-material culture were also investigated. Emphasis was placed on the use of primarily qualitative methods to refine the available quantitative data. The results presented in this publication are based on both field research and research with Rusyn respondents conducted remotely via electronic communication in 2014-2019. Although this is a five-year period, it is possible to compare the individual Rusyn communities in the five countries studied, at least in part, synchronically (i.e. here and now).
