Book Sketch based Interfaces and Modeling

Download or read book Sketch based Interfaces and Modeling written by Joaquim Jorge and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-12-15 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of sketch-based interfaces and modeling (SBIM) is concerned with developing methods and techniques to enable users to interact with a computer through sketching - a simple, yet highly expressive medium. SBIM blends concepts from computer graphics, human-computer interaction, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. Recent improvements in hardware, coupled with new machine learning techniques for more accurate recognition, and more robust depth inferencing techniques for sketch-based modeling, have resulted in an explosion of both sketch-based interfaces and pen-based computing devices. Presenting the first coherent, unified overview of SBIM, this unique text/reference bridges the two complementary research areas of user interaction (sketch-based interfaces), and graphical modeling and construction (sketch-based modeling). The book discusses the state of the art of this rapidly evolving field, with contributions from an international selection of experts. Also covered are sketch-based systems that allow the user to manipulate and edit existing data - from text, images, 3D shapes, and video - as opposed to modeling from scratch. Topics and features: reviews pen/stylus interfaces to graphical applications that avoid reliance on user interface modes; describes systems for diagrammatic sketch recognition, mathematical sketching, and sketch-based retrieval of vector drawings; examines pen-based user interfaces for engineering and educational applications; presents a set of techniques for sketch recognition that rely strictly on spatial information; introduces the Teddy system; a pioneering sketching interface for designing free-form 3D models; investigates a range of advanced sketch-based systems for modeling and designing 3D objects, including complex contours, clothing, and hair-styles; explores methods for modeling from just a single sketch or using only a few strokes. This text is an essential resource for researchers, practitioners and graduate students involved in human-factors and user interfaces, interactive computer graphics, and intelligent user interfaces and AI.

Book Rendering Techniques 98

Download or read book Rendering Techniques 98 written by George Drettakis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some of the best current research on realistic rendering is included in this volume. It emphasizes the current "hot topics” in this field: image based rendering, and efficient local and global-illumination calculations. In the first of these areas, there are several contributions on real-world model acquisition and display, on using image-based techniques for illumination and on efficient ways to parameterize and compress images or light fields, as well as on clever uses of texture and compositing hardware to achieve image warping and 3D surface textures. In global and local illumination, there are contributions on extending the techniques beyond diffuse reflections, to include specular and more general angle dependent reflection functions, on efficiently representing and approximating these reflection functions, on representing light sources and on approximating visibility and shadows. Finally, there are two contributions on how to use knowledge about human perception to concentrate the work of accurate rendering only where it will be noticed, and a survey of computer graphics techniques used in the production of a feature length computer-animated film with full 3D characters.

Book Sketch Based Interfaces and Modeling 2007

Download or read book Sketch Based Interfaces and Modeling 2007 written by Michiel van de Panne and published by A K Peters/CRC Press. This book was released on 2007-11-10 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most computer user interfaces continue to be based on the keyboard and mouse. These are good for typing and pointing, but they lack the naturalness, transparency, and ease-of-use of basic low-tech pencil and paper. Modern pen computing hardware, in principle, enables fluid drawing, sketching, and direct manipulation of both text and graphics. To realize this potential requires effective user interface designs and underlying algorithms to support them. This collection brings together the most recent research presented at the Fourth Eurographics Workshop on Sketch-Based Interfaces and Modeling that took place August 2-3, 2007 in Riverside, CA, and was held in cooperation with Eurographics and the American Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI). The included papers explore techniques and technologies needed to enable sketch-based interfaces. The focus is on methods for recognition of hand-drawn shapes and interpretation of diagrams and sketches, and on applications of sketch-based interfaces to a variety of domains such as 2D/3D graphics, CAD, diagram editing, and note-taking.

Download or read book Geospatial Thinking written by Marco Painho and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-07-20 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the fourth consecutive year, the Association of Geographic Infor- tion Laboratories for Europe (AGILE) promoted the edition of a book with the collection of the scientific papers that were submitted as full-papers to the AGILE annual international conference. Those papers went through a th competitive review process. The 13 AGILE conference call for fu- papers of original and unpublished fundamental scientific research resulted in 54 submissions, of which 21 were accepted for publication in this - lume (acceptance rate of 39%). Published in the Springer Lecture Notes in Geoinformation and Car- th graphy, this book is associated to the 13 AGILE Conference on G- graphic Information Science, held in 2010 in Guimarães, Portugal, under the title “Geospatial Thinking”. The efficient use of geospatial information and related technologies assumes the knowledge of concepts that are fundamental components of Geospatial Thinking, which is built on reasoning processes, spatial conc- tualizations, and representation methods. Geospatial Thinking is associated with a set of cognitive skills consisting of several forms of knowledge and cognitive operators used to transform, combine or, in any other way, act on that same knowledge. The scientific papers published in this volume cover an important set of topics within Geoinformation Science, including: Representation and Visualisation of Geographic Phenomena; Spatiotemporal Data Analysis; Geo-Collaboration, Participation, and Decision Support; Semantics of Geoinformation and Knowledge Discovery; Spatiotemporal Modelling and Reasoning; and Web Services, Geospatial Systems and Real-time Appli- tions.
