Book excerpt: The book combines the account of a journey that at times was difficult and tortuous but overall fantastical and life changing experience. The team made the approximately 20,000 kilometres return journey from India through the port of Kuwait, the vast Arabian Desert, then into Eastern Europe, through the soaring majestic Alps and into Central Europe by road, on motorbikes, in a 100 days, on a shoestring budget of $5 a day per person. The book is written in a conversational style which makes it readable for a wide audience. It reads like fiction, but it is a factual representation of events that the team experienced. The book has few unique features. Each chapter begins with a parable from a Gospel. These stories generate subtle answers to life's questions; build faith and generate purpose in life. Through these parables, the author shares some significant life lessons like humility, love, conflict management, etc., and successfully connects them with the theme. Each chapter has relevant leadership traits that such challenges and experiences in life bring forth in us. To conclude, for every single individual who dreams to travel but does not dare-here is the book that offers encouragement and empowers readers to embrace their passion and follow their dreams.

Book excerpt: For fifty-six days, four women left their ‘regular lives’, homes, families and comfort, to ride their motorbikes through scenic landscapes, inhospitable terrain and diverse regions. In this process, they covered 17,000 kilometres through six countries. What inspired them to follow this dangerous, and at times maddening, adventure trail? In Road to Mekong, Piya Bahadur recounts her once-in-a-lifetime journey through Southeast Asia. With little prior experience in expeditions of this nature, the group successfully planned and executed an exhilarating trip from Hyderabad, through the east Indian coast and the northeast of India, weaving through Myanmar, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam, along the river Mekong, and finally to Cambodia. By the time they returned, the lives of these audacious women had changed forever. Piya takes the reader along on her travels through places rarely visited by the itinerant Indian and shares the new world that unfolds as she journeys from being a working mother constrained by her own inhibitions to a confident traveller accepting of whatever adventures life has to offer. ‘The inspirational and adventurous journey of these four women across nations and through thousands of kilometres makes for an exhilarating read. The book should lead many more people to explore India and it’s scenic places’ MEENAKSHI SHARMA, Director General for Tourism, Incredible India

Book Demonstrating Responsible Business

Download or read book Demonstrating Responsible Business written by Vineeta Dutta Roy and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-07-10 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The attitude of sharing global problems and being part of its solution in one's own capacity and competence is, in essence, Social Responsibility today. Businesses are no exceptions, in fact, they are, more than any other time in history, expected to take larger responsibilities of their actions and impacts along their own supply chains and contribute their bit to alleviating some of the worst challenges the planet and its people are facing. The emphasis is on demonstrable differences they make. In India, the revisions done to the Companies Act, especially pertaining to the CSR done by Indian companies echo this sentiment. While stipulating definitive themes of developmental and social areas where companies can do CSR related work, a great emphasis is laid on concrete plans and tangible results, making CSR in the country a significant tool in national development and a strategy to contribute to global goals. The book, in its writing, has attempted to bring these renewed perspectives to the reader with real-world insights into related company practices.

Book excerpt: Riding Towards Me is the epic adventure story of Jay Kannaiyan who dropped everything he had in the US to ride his motorcycle back home to India by the longest possible route. The journey took him three years and three months as he rode through Latin America, Europe and Africa, finally reaching New Delhi in 2013. Jay and his motorcycle, sanDRina, encountered mechanical meltdowns, remote Mayan villages, weeks of high altitude desert isolation, Caribbean and Atlantic voyages, humility, friendship, and landscapes that almost destroyed the bike and Jay's spirit. His go-with-the-flow attitude and engineering background deliver a story of global trails and an adventuring insight that brought him fame amongst the off-road motorcycling fraternity before his journey was even complete.

Book Sovereignty and Diversity

Download or read book Sovereignty and Diversity written by Miodrag Jovanović and published by Eleven International Publishing. This book was released on 2008 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disputes about sovereignty mainly arise in those cases where fundamental rights are infringed, or democratic participation denied, on account of the citizens' membership in certain ethno-cultural minority groups. Moreover, the fact that serious challenges to sovereignty can be detected even in ethno-culturally diverse polities, which by all standards qualify as fairly just liberal-democracies, can only mean that the complex relationship between sovereignty and the diversity challenge is in need of serious consideration and analysis. By observing sovereignty and diversity through the lens of a broader liberal-democratic doctrine, this book sets out plausible strategies to cope with the problems that evolve from this issue. Sovereignty and Diversity is divided into three parts. In Part I, various normative theories of secession are evaluated both in relation to philosophy and to political science. Furthermore, the value and possible role of the uti possidetis principle is discussed. Part II addresses the value of various other methods to accommodate population diversity as means to solve disputes over sovereignty - namely multiculturalism, federalism, and decentralization, as well as minority rights. Finally, Part III groups together three case studies - the first two dealing with the secession and partition theme, while the last one shows the potential of other, less controversial means to address tensions about sovereignty. This volume is a collection of updated papers presented at the University of Belgrade in July 2005, at the international conference "Legal and Political Solution to Disputes over Sovereignty - From Kosovo to Quebec."

Book excerpt: "The share auto I squeeze into next seems unusually vulnerable after a night in the truck - too compact, too low down. Perhaps, these are the usual side effects of prolonged riding with the king of the road, I think to myself. But it is only when I fill in ‘truck’ as my mode of transportation in the hotel ledger at Udaipur does the utter ludicrousness of my endeavour truly hit home" Think truck drivers, and movie scenes of them drunkenly crushing inconvenient people to their gravelly deaths come to mind. But what are their lives on the road actually like? In Truck De India!, journalist Rajat Ubhaykar embarks on a 10,000 km-long, 100% unplanned trip, hitchhiking with truckers all across India. On the way, he makes unexpected friendships; listens to highway ghost stories; discovers the near-fatal consequences of overloading trucks; documents the fascinating tradition of truck art in Punjab; travels alongside nomadic shepherds in Kashmir; encounters endemic corruption repeatedly; survives NH39, the insurgent-ridden highway through Nagaland and Manipur; and is unfailingly greeted by the unconditional kindness of perfect strangers. Imbued with humour, empathy, and a keen sense of history, Truck De India! is a travelogue like no other you've read. It is the story of India, and Indians, on the road.
