Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Electra and Other Plays we have a collection of five of the classical dramatist Euripides' best plays. In the title work Electra, before the events of this play, the Greek general Agamemnon sacrificed a daughter to appease the gods and gain permission to sail for Troy. His wife Clytemnestra never forgave him, and upon his return she and her lover murder him. Euripides picks up the story with the children of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra, the young Electra, who has been sent to live on a farm, and her brother Orestes, who was sent to grow up abroad. Though they are more or less exiled to quench their desire to avenge their father's death, both are still quite determined to do so. Electra is fixated by dreams of revenge, and she eagerly awaits the return of Orestes, who will aid her in vengeance. Also included in this work are the following additional plays: Andromache, Hecuba, The Suppliants, and The Trojan Women.

Book excerpt: Sophocles’ innovative plays transformed Greek myths into dramas featuring complex human characters, through which he explored profound moral issues. Electra portrays the grief of a young woman for her father Agamemnon, who has been killed by her mother’s lover. Aeschylus and Euripides also dramatized this story, but the objectivity and humanity of Sophocles’ version provides a new perspective. Depicting the fall of a great hero, Ajax examines the enigma of power and weakness combined in one being, while the Women of Trachis portrays the tragic love and error of Heracles’ deserted wife Deianeira, and Philoctetes deals with the conflict between physical force and moral strength.

Book excerpt: Euripides, along was Sophocles, and Aeschylus, is largely responsible for the rise of Greek tragedy. It was in the 5th Century BC, during the height of Greece's cultural bloom, that Euripides lived and worked. Of his roughly ninety-two plays, only seventeen tragedies survive. Both ridiculed and lauded during his life, Euripides now stands as an innovator of the Greek drama. Collected here are six of Euripides' tragedies in prose translation by Edward P. Coleridge: "Medea", "Hippolytus", "Hecuba", "Electra", "Heracles", and "Helen". The first play in this collection, "Medea", tells the horrific tale of a woman who seeks revenge on her husband by killing her children. "Hippolytus" relates the tragedy of its titular character, son of Theseus, and his tragic fall at the hands of Phaedra. "Hecuba" is the tale of a fallen Queen, the grief she feels for the death of her daughter, and the revenge she takes for the murder of her son. In "Electra" we find the daughter of a slain king plotting her revenge. In "Heracles" we find a hero racing to save his family from a death sentence. Lastly, "Helen" presents an alternate tale regarding Helen of Troy than that which sparked the Trojan War. For the lover of drama and the ancient world, this collection is not to be missed--Euripides is seen here in all of his valor and brilliance. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper.
