Book Euripides and Mr Bernard Shaw Classic Reprint

Download or read book Euripides and Mr Bernard Shaw Classic Reprint written by Gilbert Norwood and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Euripides and Mr. Bernard Shaw It is notoriously hard or impossible for any man to describe, perhaps even to understand, the history and spirit of his own generation. To observe a landscape one must ascend a hill; to comprehend a historical period one must be withdrawn from it in time. A man in a forest cannot see the wood for the trees; the principle and conditions which govern our contemporaries and ourselves are apt to be hidden from us by their very pervasiveness and proximity. But the present epoch fortunately can be understood by those who live in it better than many with the help of a strong con trast, precisely the contrast which it is my present business to indicate. Our history for the last hundred years hardly presents that continuity, that gradual harmonious progress, for which we have been taught to look in the march of human affairs. There is a real gulf between us and the middle of the nineteenth century. In England, at any rate, the march of affairs broke into a kind of hand-gallop, ending. With a leap over a chasm which can hardly be defined into a morass from which we have not yet found our way. Book George Bernard Shaw

Download or read book George Bernard Shaw written by Henry L. Mencken and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from George Bernard Shaw: His Plays The Origin of Species the fight against orthodoxy, custom, and authority was perennially and necessarily a losing one. On the side of the defense were ignorance, antiquity, piety, organization, and respectability - twelve inch, wire-wound, rapid-fire guns, all of them. In the hands of the scattered, half-hearted, unorganized at tacking parties there were but two weapons - the blow pipe of impious doubt and the bludgeon of sacrilege. Neither, unsupported, was very effective. Voltaire, who tried both, scared the defenders a bit and for a while there was a great pother and scurrying about, but when the smoke cleared away the walls were just as strong as before and the drawbridge was still up. One had to believe or be damned. There was no compromise and no middle ground. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Euripides Our Contemporary

Download or read book Euripides Our Contemporary written by J. Michael Walton and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2009-08-20 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'In this masterful reevaluation of Euripides, Michael Walton recasts the playwright in light of his resonance for today's translators and directors. Springing from the rehearsal room rather than the page, Walton shows us not only why we are ready for Euripides, but why we so desperately need him.' Mary Louise Hart, Associate Curator of Antiquities, J. Paul Getty Museum 'A useful, reader-friendly introduction aimed at non-specialists, [it] offers detailed summaries of Euripides' plays, along with keen observations on their relevance for today's theater.' Rush Rehm, author of Radical Theatre Euripides Our Contemporary is a major new study of the work of the great classical tragedian that illuminates his work and demonstrates both its vitality and how it continues to speak to us today. Taking a thematic approach to Euripides' plays it provides the reader with a wide-ranging and thorough appreciation of the writer's entire canon. For students, teachers and practitioners this is the best single-volume treatment of the writer's work, considering the plays for their accessibility and for their focus on issues and concerns which are as significant as ever in the modern world. Divided into three sections, the book first examines 'Domesticating Tragedy', the manner in which Euripides gave the world of myth an application to ordinary life. The second section tackles the 'Grand Passions': characters under extraordinary pressure and the extent to which personal responsibility can be absolved through various aspects of circumstance. The third looks at the nature of Euripides' theatre and his acknowledgment of it, the great roles and the playwrights of the last hundred years whose craft seems most influenced by his work. An Appendix at the end of the book provides a short summary of the plots of all nineteen plays.

Book excerpt: Exclusive to Penguin Classics: the definitive text of Shaw’s volume of “unpleasant” plays, Widowers’ Houses, The Philanderer, and Mrs. Warren’s Profession—part of the official Bernard Shaw Library A Penguin Classic With Plays Unpleasant, Shaw issued a radical challenge to his audiences’ complacency and exposed social evils through his dramatization of the moral conflicts between youthful idealism and economic reality, promiscuity and marriage, and the duties of women to others and to themselves. His first play, Widowers’ Houses, depicts Harry Trench’s dilemma on learning that the inheritance of his fiancée comes from her father’s income as a slum landlord. In The Philanderer, charismatic Leonard Charteris proposes marriage to Grace, while he is still involved with the beautiful Julia Craven—who is not inclined to give him up so easily. And in Mrs. Warren's Profession, Vivie Warren is forced to reconsider her own future when she discovers that her mother's immoral earnings funded her genteel upbringing. This is the definitive text under the editorial supervision of Dan H. Laurence. This volume includes Shaw’s prefaces, cast lists from the first productions of the plays, and a list of his principal works.
