This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sextant Conference (also known as the Cairo Conference) was held in Cairo, Egypt, from November 22 to 26, 1943. The three main participants were President Franklin D. Roosevelt, British prime minister Winston S. Churchill, and Chinese leader Chiang Kai-shek. The primary topic under consideration for the Allies was planning for the defeat of Japan. The Eureka Conference (also called the Tehran Conference) met from November 28 to December 1, 1943, in Tehran, Iran. This conference marked the first time that the Big Three—Roosevelt, Churchill, and Soviet premier Joseph Stalin—had assembled. The main focus of their discussions was the Allied invasion of northern France (Operation Overlord) to open a second front in Europe in the late spring or early summer of 1944. The Second Cairo Conference, also held in Egypt, lasted from December 2 to 7. In addition the CCS, Churchill and Roosevelt were joined by Turkish president Ismet Inönü for several of the sessions. Operation Overlord again dominated the discussions. For the Pacific campaign, operations in Southeast Asia were a key topic at this conference. The Sextant, Eureka, and Second Cairo Conferences were three in a series of high-level conferences held by the US and British leaders in Washington, DC; Casablanca; Quebec; Cairo; Tehran; Malta; Yalta; and Potsdam to formulate the Allied grand strategy. At the Tehran, Yalta, and Potsdam conferences, the Soviet leader Stalin was also in attendance and played an important role. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 744 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This memoir is a masterly narrative by a participant at the very centre of British decision-making during the entire Second World War. Major General ‘Pug’ Ismay was appointed secretary of the Committee of Imperial Defence in July 1938 and from there became, in May 1940, Churchill’s senior military assistant and an additional member of the Chiefs of Staff Committee. Officially, his role was the leadership of the office of the minister of defence. Churchill was by then both prime minister and minister of defence and continued in these twin roles throughout the war. Ismay saw himself as Churchill’s ‘agent’ and was once flippantly described as his ‘Eminence Khaki’. Ismay was in a unique position to observe Churchill, who became a close confidante. Ismay has been praised by several highly-placed sources for his achievements in diplomacy and man-management during his Army service. His tact and charm kept the potential friction between the chiefs-of-staff and their political masters entirely controlled. His ability to ride the sometimes wild swings in Churchill’s temperament, yet still bring to committees the correct interpretation and thrust of Churchill’s views, was highly valued. This book is a masterpiece of prose. It is a remarkable product of its time and is in no way self-indulgent. It lacks military jargon and acronyms. It is full of interesting and humorous anecdotes and provides an excellent account of many aspects of Churchill’s non-public persona. It contains a single monotone plate of the author as well as three organisational diagrams and four maps. Not only military historians, but anyone with an interest in British history from the 1920s to the 1950s, would be greatly satisfied with it.”—Bruce Short RUSI Journal

Download or read book Churchill and Roosevelt Volume 2 written by Warren F. Kimball and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 785 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume two of the complete wartime correspondence of the two great statesmen of the twentieth century This three-volume work is the first complete collection of the correspondence of Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt. These volumes bring together every written communication that passed between Churchill and Roosevelt during their years of wartime leadership, providing rare perspective on the politics and strategy of the Second World War as conducted by two of history’s most charismatic men. Few other world leaders have communicated so regularly and on such an informal and often personal level. The topics covered in their correspondence range from the fate of nations and the shape of the postwar world to the mixing of martinis, details of fishing trips, and the swapping of doggerel verse. A major scholarly contribution, Churchill and Roosevelt: The Complete Correspondence draws on exhaustive research in American and British archives and include telegrams, letters, memos, and scrawled notes as well as transcripts made of Churchill and Roosevelt’s telephone conversations and a number of message drafts and unsent cables that offer unique insights into the thinking of the two leaders. Warren Kimball provides invaluable commentaries throughout, giving the context of specific documents and providing a chronology of the period. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. This book was released on with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume deals with strategic planning in the midwar era from January 1943 through the summer of 1944. This is the story of the hopes, fears, struggles, frustrations, and triumphs of the Army strategic planners coming to grips with the problems of the offensive phase of coalition warfare. Basic to this story is the account of planning by General George C. Marshall and his advisers in the great debate on European strategy which followed the Allied landings in North Africa and continued to the penetration of the German frontier in September 1944. During this period the great international conferences from Casablanca in January 1943 to the second Quebec in September 1944 were held and the Allies formulated the grand strategy of military victory. The volume follows the plans, issues, and decisions to the end of the summer of 1944, when the problems of winning the war began to come up against the challenges of victory and peace, and a new era was beginning for the Army Chief of Staff and his advisers. Military soldiers, veterans, especially World War II veterans adn their families, and students studying World War II may enjoy reading this primary source document that accounts the leadership and strategy during World War Two years 1943-1944.
