Book Grace Notes for a Year

Download or read book Grace Notes for a Year written by Norman Gilliland and published by NEMO Productions. This book was released on 2002 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This irresistible collection of stories is perfect for anyone interested in a fresh perspective on what it means to be a human being who creates art. Grace Notes for a Year sheds light on the fragile and perilous process of inspiration, composition, and performance required to create classical music, whether the final product is a masterpiece or a mess. Each page of the book corresponds to a different day of the year and features a true story about a famous figure in musical history. These delightful anecdotes—inspirational, informative, and often hilarious—disprove the myth of the artist as untouchable. Instead, Norman Gilliland exposes in them human vulnerability we can all relate to. From Beethoven to Wagner, these artists suffered from poverty, spent lazy days in bed, had scandalous love affairs, and often failed in their creative endeavors as often as they succeeded.

Book excerpt: Once called the jewel of Pennsylvania's middle anthracite coal fields, Hazleton grew up on a solid foundation of black diamonds and prospered in the coal industry. The city quickly became the financial, industrial, shopping, transportation, and entertainment center of the region. Mining gave rise to other businesses, many established to supply machinery to the numerous collieries. Silk mills and garment factories provided work to scores of people. By the close of World War II, the days of coal mining as a major industry were numbered. Slowly, the towering coal breakers fell silent, their machinery grinding to a halt. Not a single example remains standing today. Around Hazleton is an informative trip through this city and nearby towns.

Book Euryanthe and Carl Maria Von Weber s Dramaturgy of German Opera

Download or read book Euryanthe and Carl Maria Von Weber s Dramaturgy of German Opera written by Michael Charles Tusa and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1991 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weber's opera Euryanthe was written in 1823 and contains much that anticipates Wagner, as well as being a masterpiece in its own right. It was intended as the crowning work in the career of this seminal figure in the German operatic tradition of the early nineteenth century. Yet through its defective libretto it has virtually disappeared from the modern repertoire, despite containing, in Wagner's words, Weber's "most beautiful, richest, and most masterful music." In this book, Tusa provides the first full-length study of Euryanthe ever made and firmly stakes out the claim that it is "arguably the key work for understanding Weber's operatic aims." Along with close scrutiny of its dramatic aims and compositional planning, Tusa provides insight into its genre and reception history. The result is a book that not only deepens our understanding of a major neglected work but may help to restore it to its true place in the history of romantic opera.

Book Carl Maria von Weber and the Search for a German Opera

Download or read book Carl Maria von Weber and the Search for a German Opera written by Stephen C. Meyer and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2003-01-17 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stephen C. Meyer details the intricate relationships between the operas Der FreischÃ1⁄4tz and Euryanthe, and contemporary discourse on both the "Germany of the imagination" and the new nation itself. In so doing, he presents excerpts from a wide range of philosophical, political, and musical writings, many of which are little known and otherwise unavailable in English. Individual chapters trace the multidimensional concept of German and "foreign" opera through the 19th century. Meyer's study of Der FreischÃ1⁄4tz places the work within the context of emerging German nationalism, and a chapter on Euryanthe addresses the opera's stylistic and topical shifts in light of changing cultural and aesthetic circumstances. As a result, Meyer argues that the search for a new German opera was not merely an aesthetic movement, but a political and social critique as well.

Book excerpt: Music! It is the great pleasure of this city, the great occupation of the drawing-rooms, which have banished politics, and which have renounced literature, from ennui. Jules Janin, An American in Paris, 1843 Afternoon and evening entertainments in the drawing rooms of the aristocracy and upper middle classes were a staple of cultural life in nineteenth-century Paris. Music was often a feature of these occasions and private salons provided important opportunities for musicians, especially singers, to develop their careers. Such recitals included excerpts from favourite operas, but also the more traditional forms of French song, the romance and its successor the m die. Drawing on extensive research into the musical press of the period, David Tunley paints a vivid portrait of the nineteenth-century Parisien salons and the performers who sang in them. Against this colourful backdrop, he discusses the development of French romantic song, with its hallmarks of simplicity and clarity of diction. Combined with Italian influences and the impression made by Schubert's songs, the French romance developed into a form with greater complexity - the m die. Salons, Singers and Songs describes this transformation and the seeds it sowed for music by later composers such as Faur Duparc and Debussy.
