Book Audacious Euphony

  • Author : Richard Cohn
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2012-01-01

  • Pages : 288 pages

Download or read book Audacious Euphony written by Richard Cohn and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music theorists have long believed that 19th-century triadic progressions idiomatically extend the diatonic syntax of 18th-century classical tonality, and have accordingly unified the two repertories under a single mode of representation. Post-structuralist musicologists have challenged this belief, advancing the view that many romantic triadic progressions exceed the reach of classical syntax and are mobilized as the result of a transgressive, anti-syntactic impulse. In Audacious Euphony, author Richard Cohn takes both of these views to task, arguing that romantic harmony operates under syntactic principles distinct from those that underlie classical tonality, but no less susceptible to systematic definition. Charting this alternative triadic syntax, Cohn reconceives what consonant triads are, and how they relate to one another. In doing so, he shows that major and minor triads have two distinct natures: one based on their acoustic properties, and the other on their ability to voice-lead smoothly to each other in the chromatic universe. Whereas their acoustic nature underlies the diatonic tonality of the classical tradition, their voice-leading properties are optimized by the pan-triadic progressions characteristic of the 19th century. Audacious Euphony develops a set of inter-related maps that organize intuitions about triadic proximity as seen through the lens of voice-leading proximity, using various geometries related to the 19th-century Tonnetz. This model leads to cogent analyses both of particular compositions and of historical trends across the long nineteenth century. Essential reading for music theorists, Audacious Euphony is also a valuable resource for music historians, performers and composers.

Book Sounds Good on Paper

Book excerpt: Figures of speech are everywhere. Popstar or postman, president or paperboy, the chances are you've already used a whole heap of them today without realising it. For business writers, they're pure gold. They make our words more powerful, persuasive and poetic. They add flavour to dreary standard issue language. They help us get our message across in a way that's immediate and memorable. This book takes fifty of our finest figures of speech and explains how they can help anyone who works with words, regardless of profession, to express themselves with more style and impact. Sounds Good on Paper is a practical guide to every figure of speech you never knew you knew, including the chiasmus ('You can take the boy out of Essex, but you can't take Essex out of the boy'), tmesis ('abso-blooming-lutley') and kenning ('pencil pusher' or 'coffin dodger'). It shows how you can use figures to make your words work harder and pump up your powers of persuasion. If you want to inspire and engage your readers, this book is here to help.

Book The Hum of the World

Download or read book The Hum of the World written by Lawrence Kramer and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2021-06-21 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hum of the World is an invitation to contemplate what would happen if we heard the world as attentively as we see it. Balancing big ideas, playful wit and lyrical prose, this imaginative volume identifies the role of sound in Western experience as the primary medium in which the presence and persistence of life acquires tangible form. The positive experience of aliveness is not merely in accord with sound, but inaccessible, even inconceivable, without it. Lawrence Kramer’s poetic book roves freely over music, media, language, philosophy, and science from the ancient world to the present, along the way revealing how life is apprehended through sounds ranging from pandemonium to the faint background hum of the world. This warm meditation on auditory culture uncovers the knowledge and pleasure waiting when we learn that the world is alive with sound.

Book Classical Music

Download or read book Classical Music written by Phil G. Goulding and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2011-03-16 with total page 657 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MAKE A SOUND INVESTMENT IN CLASSICAL MUSIC Who are the ten most important classical composers? Who in the world was Palestrina? Why did Stravinsky's "Rite of Spring" cause a riot? Which five of each important composer's works should you buy? What is a concerto and how does it differ from a sonata? Maybe you don't know the answers to these questions; author Phil Goulding certainly didn't. When Goulding first tried to learn about classical music, he found himself buried in an avalanche of technical terms and complicated jargon--so he decided to write the book he couldn't find. The result is a complete classical music education in one volume. Comprehensive, discriminating, and delightfully irreverent, Classical Music provides such essential information as: * Rankings of the top 50 composers (Bach is #1. Borodin is #50) * A detailed and anecdotal look at each composer's life and work * The five primary works of each composer and specific recommended CDs for each. * Further great works of each composer--if you really like him * Concise explanations of musical terminology, forms, and periods * A guide to the parts and history of the symphony orchestra "This book uses every conceivable gimmick to immerse readers in the richness of classical music: lists, rankings, sidebars devoted to lively anecdotes, and catchy leads." --The Washington Post "One terrific music appreciation book...The information is surprisingly detailed but concisely presented. Goulding's writing style is breezy yet mature....[He] has raised music appreciation from a racket to a service." --The Arizona Daily Star
