Book Eugenics Classic Reprint

Download or read book Eugenics Classic Reprint written by Irving Fisher and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eugenics But it does not. Nor does eugenics propose to do violence in any other way to any humanitarian or Christian effort. Eugenics does not mean, as some have imagined, compulsory or government-made marriages. Some people have thought that eugenics was some half-baked scheme to breed the human race as we breed domestic animals, and to make a race of pug-noses or blond hair or blue eyes or any other fancy that some master of ceremonies should conceive. Nor does it mean a reduction in the proportion of love marriages. On the contrary, it means an increase of such marriages. Just as soon as men and women come to see and admire, as in ancient Greece, the ideal of physical perfection they will fall in love on that basis, as nature always intended that they should. There will be less interference with love marriages through ambition to acquire property or title. Eugenics is simply an application of modern science to improve the human race. "But," says the skeptic, "that will take millions of years!" Nevertheless, I reassert that it is easily practical to alter and improve the human race and to do so in a very short time. This Is The New Optimism Of Eugenics and it is based on solid evidence. Until recently no one realized how fast the race could improve if it would. Even Galton himself, when he first proposed eugenics, was under the impression that we inherit from our ancestors in a way which would make possible improvement extremely slow. He put forward as a theory (what we now know to be incorrect) that each child gets half of its nature from its parents, one quarter from its grandparents, one-eighth from its great grandparents, one-sixteenth from its great great grandparents, and so on indefinitely back, the sum total of those fractions being, when added up to infinity, just unity or the whole inheritance. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The' Progress of Eugenics IN offering this little book to the reader I must make acknowledgment for the invaluable help I have received in eugenic propaganda, since I left medical practice to follow Galton, ten years ago, to the National Council of Public Morals, which, for instance, granted me its platform in the autumn of 1912, for a public course of eight lectures in the Holborn Hall, London, much of which is here included; and to the Managers of the Royal Institution, for the privilege of return ing to the subject here, yet again, in the course of lectures on The Progress of Eugenics, this day completed. Let it also be recorded, for Great Britain, in this decennial volume of modern eugenics, that, at last, thanks to the help of Major Leonard Darwin, President of the Eugenics Education Society, I have succeeded in getting a reprint of Galton's Hereditary Genius and that, though the inebriates Act is yet to be, yesterday the Mental Deficiency Act, 1913, and the Order of the Local Government Board making ophthalmia neonatorum notifiable, came into Operation. We shall some day have a eugenic sociology, to which the first part of this vol ume seeks to contribute: and the sociology and poli tics which have not yet discovered that man is mortal will go to their own place. Book Readings in Evolution Genetics and Eugenics Classic Reprint

Download or read book Readings in Evolution Genetics and Eugenics Classic Reprint written by Horatio Hackett Newman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Readings in Evolution, Genetics, and Eugenics The one-man textbook is only too often written to emphasize the author's pet theories and is likely to be unduly biased. The present work is completely non-partisan. It consists Of the writ ings Of many authors and presents many diverse theories. The student is left to balance the various views one against another and to form his own judgment. It is very unfortunate, but none the less true, that even in these scientific days, the subject of evolution has a bad name in many communities and in many educational institutions with religious affiliations. The mistake is made of supposing that evolution and religion are diametrically opposed. The present writer has been at some pains to make it clear that evolution and religion are strictly compatible. We teachers of evolution in the colleges have no Sinister designs upon the religious faith Of our students. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heredity in Relation to Eugenics The Eugenics Record Office will be glad to assist in the establishment of local eugenics societies which shall become centers for the study of local blood-lines and for local in struction. The Office seeks to assist state officials in the study of the classes which are supported and protected by the State, and to assist the States to locate the centers in which their defectives and delinquents are being bred. It is believed that a little money spent in studying the sources of reproduction of persons who are destined to become state wards will prove a highly profitable investment, since it may lead to steps that will diminish such reproduction. Book Applied Eugenics Classic Reprint

Download or read book Applied Eugenics Classic Reprint written by Paul Popenoe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Applied Eugenics The science of eugenics consists of a foundation of biology and a superstructure of sociology. Galton, its founder, em phasized both parts in due proportion. Until recently, how ever, most sociologists have been either indifferent or hostile to eugenics, and the science has been left for the most part in the hands Of biologists, who have naturally worked most on the foundations and neglected the superstructure. Although we are not disposed to minimize the importance of the biological part, we think it desirable that the means of applying the biological principles should be more carefully studied. The reader of this book will, consequently, find only a summary explanation of the mechanism of inheritance. Emphasis has rather been laid on the practical means by which society may encourage the re production of superior persons and discourage that of inferiors. Book Heredity and Eugenics Classic Reprint

Download or read book Heredity and Eugenics Classic Reprint written by R. R. Gates and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heredity and Eugenics The central problem of evolution is still the nature and causes of variation, while the practical problems of eugenics centre about heredity. Variation in past ages has already endowed the human race with an almost infinite variety of types and characters, many of the latter alternative in their inheritance. We have only to compare those we know best with their relatives and ancestors to realise how minute are the resemblances and differences which may be handed on to descendants and collateral lines. These are, no doubt, chiefly a matter of biological inheritance, though similarity of environment may play a' part in certain cases. Probably in no other species of animal or plant does the number of differences between individuals approach the number to be Observed in man. This is to be expected, because of the mental and physical complexity of the human organism; but it does not imply greater intrinsic variability than in other animals or plants. Download or read book Social Heredity and Social Evolution written by Herbert William Conn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Social Heredity and Social Evolution: The Other Side of Eugenics The application of the great laws of nature to the explanation of the history of the human race is one of the fascinating phases of science. In the study of the evolutionary processes of the organic world that has followed Darwin it has been generally as sumed that the laws which govern the rest of the animal world have also governed the evolution of mankind. That man holds a unique position in nature has been generally recognized; and some times this idea has been so prominent in the minds of scientists, as well as other classes of think ers, as to lead to the assumption that the develop ment of man has been a thing apart from the rest of the living world and due to some special stimulus. Most generally, however, it has been silently as sumed that mankind has been developed under the same kind of laws and forces that have been con cerned in the formation of the lower orders of nature. One of the more recent phases of this belief has found expression in the great interest taken in the modern study of eugenics; for this school is based upon the laws of inheritance as they have been determined by the study of the lower orders of nature which have then been applied to man.
