Book The World List of Threatened Trees

Download or read book The World List of Threatened Trees written by and published by Bright Sparks. This book was released on 1998 with total page 668 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tree species are ecologically, culturally and economically valuable components of biodiversity and their conservation is essential to the well-being of people in all countries of the world. With increasing general pressures on ecosystems and selective pressures on species, it has become apparent that many tree species are threatened with extinction. The world list of threatened trees presents the results of the first survey of the conservation status of tree species worldwide.

Book Valuable Broadleaved Forests in Europe

Download or read book Valuable Broadleaved Forests in Europe written by Heinrich Spiecker and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecological and economic considerations recently increased the interest in growing valuable broadleaved tree species. Although the demand for valuable timber is growing, and there is a notable interest among forest owners and farmers to grow valuable broad leaved tree species, the current level of knowledge about these species is insufficient. More information on how to grow valuable broadleaved species to obtain high-quality wood and more research on new options for forest management is needed. This book covers various relevant aspects of growing valuable broadleaved trees in an interdisciplinary approach. The disciplines are represented by a consortium of experts and professionals in different disciplines of forest sciences and related areas. They describe the state of the art in their research fields.

Book Incompatibility and Incongruity in Wild and Cultivated Plants

Download or read book Incompatibility and Incongruity in Wild and Cultivated Plants written by Dreux de Nettancourt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in plant cell molecular biology have considerably increased our understanding of pollen-pistil barriers, particularly those operated by incompatibility mechanisms, and, at the same time, demonstrated the complexity and diversity of rejection systems once considered to be relatively simple. This book reviews the impressive knowledge acquired in the last century on the biology, particularly the inheritance and population genetics of self-incompatibility, and presents the new approaches to the study of the structure, function and evolution of incompatibility alleles and the analysis of cell-cell recognition and pollen rejection. The different methods now available for transforming the breeding behaviour of higher plants are also discussed.

Book Post Fire Management and Restoration of Southern European Forests

Download or read book Post Fire Management and Restoration of Southern European Forests written by Francisco Moreira and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-11-02 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In spite of all the efforts made in fire prevention and suppression, every year about 45 000 forest fires occur in Europe, burning ca. 0.5 million hectares of forests and other rural lands. The management of these burned forests has been given much less attention than fire prevention or fire suppression issues, but the post-fire management of burned areas raises strong concerns (economic and social impacts, soil erosion and water quality, biodiversity loss, forest restoration). Although there are a few publications which address post-fire management, the focus of these has been either on general approaches to restoration or specific topics such as preventing post-fire soil erosion. This book is about the post-fire management of fire-prone forest types in southern Europe. It provides the first comprehensive overview of the topic, ranging from stand-level to landscape-level management, and from emergency actions to long-term restoration approaches.

Book Crop Wild Relatives

  • Author : Danny Hunter
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2012-06-25
  • ISBN : 1136538232
  • Pages : 442 pages

Download or read book Crop Wild Relatives written by Danny Hunter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-06-25 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crop wild relatives (CWR) are plant species which are more or less closely related to crops. They are a vital resource by providing a pool of genetic variation that can be used in breeding new and better adapted varieties of crops that are resistant to stress, disease, drought and other factors. They will be increasingly important in allowing crops to adapt to the impacts of climate, thus safeguarding future agricultural production. Until recently, the main conservation strategy adopted for CWR has been ex situ - through the maintenance of samples as seed or vegetative material in various kinds of genebank or other facilities. Now the need to conserve CWR in their natural surroundings (in situ) is increasingly recognized. Recent research co-ordinated by Bioversity International has produced a wealth of information on good practices and lessons learned for their effective conservation. This book captures the important practical experiences of countries participating in this work and describes them for the wider conservation community. It includes case studies and examples from Armenia, Bolivia, Madagascar, Sri Lanka and Uzbekistan, which are important centres of diversity for crop wild relatives, and covers four geographical regions - the Caucasus, South America, Africa and the Asia-Pacific Region. It provides practical, relevant information and guidance for the scaling-up of actions targeting CWR conservation around the world.

Book Biodiversity

    Book Details:
  • Author : Bilge Şener
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2002
  • ISBN : 9780306474774
  • Pages : 436 pages

Download or read book Biodiversity written by Bilge Şener and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the proceedings of the 3rd IUPAC International Conference on Biodiversity (ICOB-3), November 3-8, 2001, Antalya, Turkey, this book discusses the value of bio-resources and the need for their conservation in terms of the biomolecular chemistry of naturally occurring molecular systems. The development of pharmaceutical, agricultural and industrial products from bioresources can be used to promote incentives for conservation by providing an economic return to sustainable use of those sources. The 54 chapters inform readers on the search for insight into the species and documents how much of life remains to be scientifically identified. They also explore identification strategies and methods along with the implications for protecting biodiversity. In summary, biomolecular aspects of biodiversity and innovative utilization of bioresources are discussed from very diverse points of view ranging from their botanical, zoological, taxonomic and genomic expressions to their biomolecular, structural, mechanistic and functional aspects.
