Book Geopolitical and Humanitarian Aspects of the Belarus EU Border Conflict

Download or read book Geopolitical and Humanitarian Aspects of the Belarus EU Border Conflict written by Elżbieta Kużelewska and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-02-16 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a broad geopolitical and legal analysis of the longer-term dispute between the Belarusian regime and the European Union, played out through conflict on the Polish–Belarusian border, which started in 2021. Although Poland finds itself at the center of this conflict, the book covers all countries whose territorial integrity has been affected, revealing a Belarusian regime taking advantage of the refugee crisis as a tool of hybrid warfare for destabilizing the political situation. As such, it also examines the role of Russia and its influence by means of its Belarusian neighbor, exposing the underlying motivations and mechanisms used by the Lukashenko regime towards the European community. This book will be of key interest to scholars and students of Central and Eastern European politics, EU politics, migration politics/studies, global governance, human rights, crisis management and, more broadly, to international relations, security studies, and international law. Chapter 5 of this book is freely available as a downloadable Open Access PDF at www.taylorfrancis.com, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non-Commercial-No Derivative Licence (CC-BY-NC-ND) 4.0 license.

Book EU and Belarus

Download or read book EU and Belarus written by Ann Lewis and published by Federal Trust. This book was released on 2002 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Belarus is perhaps the least changed of all the former Soviet states, with its authoritarian regime, non-liberalized economy and close links with Russia. Yet following enlargement of the European Community it will be an immediate neighbor and a major crossing-point between east and west, whether for people, drugs or energy supplies. This book looks at Belarus s checkered history since independence, its internal development and international relations, and considers prospects for change both before and after enlargement, with recommendations on how the European Union might best respond. Contributors include a wide range of academics and officials, professionals and practitioners, from Belarus, EU countries and beyond.

Book European Influence on a Modern Dictatorship

Download or read book European Influence on a Modern Dictatorship written by Elzbieta Szumanska and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2010-03-31 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject Politics - Topic: European Union, grade: 2,0, European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder), course: CSFP-Northern and Eastern Dimensions of the EU, language: English, abstract: Belarus became a dictatorship shortly after the young democracy there failed. Among different reasons of it not to be underestimated is the economic crisis that time and the lack of the national consciousness of Belarusians. Both made it easier to introduce violence, force order and stability mainly due to the fact that democracy was associated first of all with anarchy and empty shelves in shops. The intense relationship with Russia, mainly due to economic dependence and the Soviet tradition, caused an exclusion Belarus’ in Europe and also a self-exclusion of the Belarusians. After several years of minimal contacts between Belarus and the West, there has been an increased interest in the region to be observed. The lesson from the past has shown that isolation and political/economic pressure do not work in case of Belarus, so that the “Serbia scenario” cannot be repeated. The main reasons for an increased interest in Belarus are the Eastern enlargement of the European Union and the importance of resources, mainly gas and oil, flowing through the Republic from Russia. Next to the realistic approach that includes also the border zone pragmatism, there are also idealistic reasons to be taken under consideration. The aspirations of the new member states in Central Europe and the believe of the EU that a stabile, accountable neighborhood can be assured only through building democracy in the country made up the decision of the EU to intensify the democratization processes in Belarus.

Book EU Belarus Relations

Download or read book EU Belarus Relations written by Naja Bentzen and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Belarus--a hesitant participant in the Eastern Partnership (EaP) and traditionally one of Russia's closest allies--has long tested the limits of the EU's policy projection. The main sticking point in EU-Belarus relations has been and still remains Minsk's reluctance to commit to democracy, as well as to political and civil rights. In the light of 'positive political developments' in relations between the European Union and Belarus--owing not least to the Belarusian authorities' release of six political prisoners in August 2015--the Council lifted some restrictive measures on Belarus in February 2016, while extending others for a further year. The Ukraine crisis--during which Minsk hosted important ceasefire talks--appeared to spark a rethink in both Minsk and Brussels. Growing frictions with Moscow and the continued economic recession in Russia have put pressure on the social contract between Belarus's leadership and its citizens, increasing the incentives for Belarus to mend ties with the West, including the EU. However, Minsk's crackdown on recent protest waves have sparked criticism from the EU and rekindled concern over long-standing president Alexander Lukashenko's poor human rights record.

Book The EU and Belarus After the Election

Download or read book The EU and Belarus After the Election written by Balázs Jarábik and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Far from representing a show of strength, the brutal post-election crackdown in Belarus was a sign of the Lukashenka regime's internal weakness. The EU must seize this opportunity to isolate the President while working with Belarusian society to help the country move beyond authoritarianism. It must also take advantage of Russia's growing frustration with its ally to begin a direct conversation with Moscow about Minsk--something that Lukashenka fears. With EU foreign ministers due to meet next Monday (31st January) to decide on imposing sanctions on Belarus, the European Council on Foreign Relations and FRIDE today publish The EU and Belarus after the election. This policy memo argues that while Europe must send a strong message to Belarus and the world that it will not tolerate repression and electoral fraud, blanket punishments should be avoided. The EU and Belarus after the election was written by Balazs Jarabik, Jana Kobzova and Andrew Wilson. They argue: Belarus faces economic crisis, a battle both internally and with Russia over the privatisation of its assets and growing divisions within its leadership. The EU's position is therefore stronger than it seems. The EU should open a dialogue with Russia about Belarus. Moscow has grown increasingly frustrated with Lukashenka's geopolitical manoeuvring, and the poor value for money it gets from the regime it subsidises. Europe must not fall into the trap of focusing only on Lukashenka and his attempts to play the West and Russia off against each other. Europe must act decisively to isolate those responsible for election fraud and the post-election crackdown, while avoiding blanket punishments; it should stop high-level contacts with the regime, impose a visa ban on leading figures including Lukashenka, and freeze the assets of those people. The EU should attempt to engage ordinary Belarusians in the idea of reform by reducing the bureaucracy and cost involved in getting Schengen visas. It must also reach out beyond the current, fragmented political opposition to build contacts with those who support greater liberalisation, including bureaucrats and businessmen, and support independent media.--Publisher description.

Book excerpt: In 2020, mass anti-government protests erupted across Belarus. The brutal crackdown that followed shocked the international community: the authorities arrested tens of thousands of citizens, shut down independent media and NGOs, and fomented a migrant crisis on the European Union's border. But where many thought Belarus's dictator, Alyaksandr Lukashenka, would fall, he instead turned to Moscow for support, intensifying repression. Many of his opponents fled the country. Then, in February 2022, Belarus provided a staging area for Russia's invasion of Ukraine, allowing troops and missile systems to be based on its territory as large-scale war returned to Eastern Europe once again. Many outsiders now view Belarus as little more than a Russian military district, rather than a sovereign country. Paul Hansbury offers a wide-ranging account of these two related crises.

Book World Politics at the Edge of Chaos

Download or read book World Politics at the Edge of Chaos written by Emilian Kavalski and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2015-04-15 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why are policymakers, scholars, and the general public so surprised when the world turns out to be unpredictable? World Politics at the Edge of Chaos suggests that the study of international politics needs new forms of knowledge to respond to emerging challenges such as the interconnectedness between local and transnational realities; between markets, migration, and social movements; and between pandemics, a looming energy crisis, and climate change. Asserting that Complexity Thinking (CT) provides a much-needed lens for interpreting these challenges, the contributors offer a parallel assessment of the impact of CT to anthropocentric and non-anthropocentric (post-human) International Relations. Using this perspective, the result should be less surprise when confronting the dynamism of a fragile and unpredictable global life. Download or read book ISIS written by Michael Weiss and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-01-29 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revelatory look inside the world's most dangerous terrorist group. Initially dismissed by US President Barack Obama, along with other fledgling terrorist groups, as a “jayvee squad” compared to al-Qaeda, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has shocked the world by conquering massive territories in both countries and promising to create a vast new Muslim caliphate that observes the strict dictates of Sharia law. In ISIS: Inside the Army of Terror, American journalist Michael Weiss and Syrian analyst Hassan Hassan explain how these violent extremists evolved from a nearly defeated Iraqi insurgent group into a jihadi army of international volunteers who behead Western hostages in slickly produced videos and have conquered territory equal to the size of Great Britain. Beginning with the early days of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the founder of ISIS’s first incarnation as “al-Qaeda in Iraq,” Weiss and Hassan explain who the key players are—from their elusive leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi to the former Saddam Baathists in their ranks—where they come from, how the movement has attracted both local and global support, and where their financing comes from. Political and military maneuvering by the United States, Iraq, Iran, and Syria have all fueled ISIS’s astonishing and explosive expansion. Drawing on original interviews with former US military officials and current ISIS fighters, the authors also reveal the internecine struggles within the movement itself, as well as ISIS’s bloody hatred of Shiite Muslims, which is generating another sectarian war in the region. Just like the one the US thought it had stopped in 2011 in Iraq. Past is prologue and America’s legacy in the Middle East is sowing a new generation of terror.
