This book was released on 2012-06-25 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how membership of the European Union has affected life in the ten former communist countries of Eastern Europe that are now members of the European Union. For each country, political, economic and social changes are described and discussed, together with people’s perceptions of the effects of EU membership. Overall, the book shows how the benefits of EU membership have differed between different countries, and how perceptions about the benefits also differ and have changed over time.

Book The Unnoticed Effects of EU Accession

Download or read book The Unnoticed Effects of EU Accession written by Vesela Kovacheva and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-08 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study provides empirical evidence on the considerable but often unnoticed impact of EU accession on the mobility and integration of migrants from Bulgaria in Germany. Original data from a time-location sampling survey in Hamburg reveal that free movement not only induced a high level of mobility among EU citizens from Bulgaria after 2007 but also enabled their more permanent settlement in Germany. The study also provides statistical evidence that EU citizenship contributed to better legal integration of Bulgarian migrants in Germany, but national policies shaped to a greater extent their integration in terms of participation in the core areas of life. Restrictive policies such as transitional periods in the freedom of work hampered labour market integration and created more disadvantaged positions for workers. Inclusive policies such as the dual citizenship policy facilitated the naturalisation of settled migrants and led to exceptionally high naturalisation rates for Bulgarians that point to their successful integration in society. However, integration successes remain almost unnoticed in public discourse, which is dominated by the image of Bulgarian migration as a challenge.

Book Tourism in European Microstates and Dependencies

Download or read book Tourism in European Microstates and Dependencies written by Dallen J. Timothy and published by CABI. This book was released on 2020-11-06 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tourism in European Microstates and Dependencies carefully examines the nuances and realities associated with tourism, social and economic development, geography, and geopolitics of Europe's smallest microstates and dependencies. Through case study-based material, the book covers the smallest states of Europe, the European dependencies inside Europe, and other unique territorial anomalies and unrecognized de facto states. It looks at how, besides small size and economy of scale, one of the characteristics that connects these unique states and territories is their dependence on tourism, or their desire to develop it, for their socio-economic well-being.

Book Sustainability of Tourism

Download or read book Sustainability of Tourism written by Metin Kozak and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2011-07-12 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of sustainability has become central to the discussion of how to succeed in the stable development of the tourism industry, due to the uncontrollable nature of supply and demand over the past few decades. Thus, this book examines policies and practices associated with the introduction of various methods in order to maintain sustainable tourism development. The list of policies and practices is based on a selection of the most recent topics, providing many real-world examples and cases in relation to culture and nature-based environmental issues, representing both individual businesses and tourist destinations with an international focus, namely Australia, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Portugal, South Korea, Taiwan, Turkey, and the USA. Structured with 15 chapters altogether, the principles and guidelines discussed apply equally to different product levels in tourism such as museums, cities, regions, and countries. This volume is intended as a supplementary textbook for further reading. The editors believe that the book will gain attention from colleagues worldwide because of relevant educational courses on sustainable tourism, environmental tourism and cultural heritage management.

Book The EU s Transformative Power

Download or read book The EU s Transformative Power written by H. Grabbe and published by Springer. This book was released on 2005-11-10 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1989 and 2004, the EU's conditionality for membership transformed Central and East Europe. The EU had enormous potential power over the whole range of domestic politics in the candidate countries. However, the EU was able to use that power at a few key points in the process leading to their accession. The EU's long-term influence worked primarily through soft power and through voluntary rather than coercive means. During the membership preparations, the EU built many different routes of influence into the candidate countries' domestic policy-making through 'Europeanization'. The Central and East Europeans voluntarily took on the Union's norms and methods, guided by the European Commission, in a massive transfer of policies and institutions. However, the EU missed important opportunities to effect change as well. The EU's Transformative Power explores in detail how the EU used its influence to control the movement of people across Europe, through both coercive use of conditionality and voluntary methods of Europeanization.

Book Soft or Hard Borders

Download or read book Soft or Hard Borders written by Joan DeBardeleben and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing together leading European and North American experts, this timely volume answers questions about the implications and management of the new external borders of the European Union following another phase of enlargement. Implications of the EU's new external border, especially its eastern border with Russia and Ukraine, will be a key issue for the new member countries, for the EU, and for the new neighbouring regions. The contributors address this emerging question from two perspectives. They examine whether an expanded Europe will create a new dividing line in Europe between 'insiders' and 'outsiders', and also consider the concrete problems of border management and how the issues will be handled. The book will be of particular value to those concerned with European politics and the expansion of Europe, and to those with an interest in political sociology.

Book The European Union s 2007 Enlargement

Download or read book The European Union s 2007 Enlargement written by Cristina Chiva and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-07-10 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book fills a significant gap in recent literature on European Union politics by examining the EU’s ‘other’ eastern enlargement, completed in 2007 with the accession of Bulgaria and Romania. It focuses on both the process and the effects of the 2007 enlargement within the wider context of the post-communist countries’ accession to the EU, and, more broadly, within the context of the history of EU enlargement. The book brings together in-depth analyses of a wide range of issues, both from a comparative perspective and through single case studies. Individual contributions shed new light onto EU enlargement through a theoretical re-evaluation of the ‘strategic action’ paradigm, as well as through historical analyses of the 2007 enlargement and of its implications for future EU enlargements. Further insight into the process of EU enlargement is gained through systematic exploration of the impact of accession on policy-making and institutional structures in Bulgaria and Romania. Altogether, the contributions exemplify the multi-faceted nature of EU enlargement and accession, as well as the extent to which the process of acceding to the EU is not completed with membership, either for the EU or for the candidate countries. This book was published as a special issue of Perspectives on European Politics and Society.

Download or read book Europe Undivided written by Milada Anna Vachudova and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2005-02-17 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Europe Undivided analyzes how an enlarging EU has facilitated a convergence toward liberal democracy among credible future members of the EU in Central and Eastern Europe. It reveals how variations in domestic competition put democratizing states on different political trajectories after1989, and how the EU's leverage eventually influenced domestic politics in liberal and particularly illiberal democracies. In doing so, Europe Undivided illuminates the changing dynamics of the relationship between the EU and candidate states from 1989 to 2004, and challenges policymakers to manageand improve EU leverage to support democracy, ethnic tolerance, and economic reform in other candidates and proto-candidates such as the Western Balkan states, Turkey, and Ukraine. Albeit not by design, the most powerful and successful tool of EU foreign policy has turned out to be EU enlargement -and this book helps us understand why, and how, it works.
