Au Proche-Orient, l'Entente cordiale bâtie par Talleyrand est ébranlée. Les flottes anglaises et françaises se font face en Méditerranée. Mais le pacifique évite l'affrontement et freine Thiers, son bouillonnant président du Conseil. La France sortira humiliée de la crise orientale en 1840.
