La méthode optique est actuellement un des modes d'investigation les plus sensibles que l'on puisse utiliser pour cette étude ; elle est basée sur la mesure de l'ellipticité présentée par un faisceau de lumière monochromatique, initialement polarisé rectilignement, après réflexion dans certaines conditions sur la surface considérée comme invariable et homogène, approximation que les expériences justifient pour les différentes surfaces étudiées. Je vais d'abord indiquer comment s'est introduite cette notion de couche de passage dans la théorie de la réflexion ; puis, pour compléter ces indications générales, je passerai rapidement en revue les travaux déjà effectués et les théories proposées, dont la discussion à la lumière des idées actuelles sur la constitution des couches de transition, conduira à poser les bases du présent travail.
