Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the issue of the singularity versus the multiplicity of ancient Near Eastern deities who are known by a common first name but differentiated by their last names, or geographic epithets. It focuses primarily on the Ištar divine names in Mesopotamia, Baal names in the Levant, and Yahweh names in Israel, and it is structured around four key questions: How did the ancients define what it meant to be a god - or more pragmatically, what kind of treatment did a personality or object need to receive in order to be considered a god by the ancients? Upon what bases and according to which texts do modern scholars determine when a personality or object is a god in an ancient culture? In what ways are deities with both first and last names treated the same and differently from deities with only first names? Under what circumstances are deities with common first names and different last names recognizable as distinct independent deities, and under what circumstances are they merely local manifestations of an overarching deity? The conclusions drawn about the singularity of local manifestations versus the multiplicity of independent deities are specific to each individual first name examined in accordance with the data and texts available for each divine first name.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although it is a relatively .l'oung branch of mathematics, category theorJ; has already achieved important results that are dispersed in a great number of papers and gathered in some monographs. For this reason, to write a new monograph on the theory of categories is easy, due to the abundance of material, but also difficult, due to the great quantity of ideas and results. In this work we try to give all exposition of some of the ideas and results of the theory of categories. We use current terminology and build as simple a framework as possible, but nevertheless sufficient to enable the reader of this book to understand most of the research papers deroted to this theory. In order to read this book e{fectil'ely, the reader is assumed to possess some knowledge of set theory, as well as some elementary facts from algebra and general topology. However, the reader should hare mathematical maturity. The first chapter deals with the general stud}' of categories. Here the basic notions are introduced and most of the fundamental results are proved. The second chapter discusses the problem of the completion of categories. Brief!:!-' said, this means the embedding of a gil'en category into a category that possesses some additional properties, e.lpeciallr those connected with the existence of limits and colimits. The third chapter covers the algebraic categories, i.e. categories of universal algebras and their general study. as well as the study of the functors between them.

Book The Experience of Power in Medieval Europe 950 1350

Download or read book The Experience of Power in Medieval Europe 950 1350 written by Robert F. Berkhofer III and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking their inspiration from the work of Thomas N. Bisson, to whom the book is dedicated, the contributors to this volume explore the experience of power in medieval Europe: the experience of those who held power, those who helped them wield it, and those who felt its effects. The seventeen essays in the collection, which range geographically from England in the north to Castile in the south, and chronologically from the tenth century to the fourteenth, address a series of specific topics in institutional, social, religious, cultural, and intellectual history. Taken together, they present three distinct ways of discussing power in a medieval historical context: uses of power, relations of power, and discourses of power. The collection thus examines not only the operational and social aspects of power, but also power as a contested category within the medieval world. The Experience of Power suggests new and fruitful ways of understanding and studying power in the Middle Ages.

Book The Manichaean Church in Kellis

Download or read book The Manichaean Church in Kellis written by Håkon Fiane Teigen and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-06-08 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Manichaean Church in Kellis presents an in-depth study of social organisation within the religious movement known as Manichaeism in Roman Egypt. In particular, it employs papyri from Kellis (Ismant el-Kharab), a village in the Dakhleh Oasis, to explore the socio-religious world of lay Manichaeans in the fourth century CE. Manichaeism has often been perceived as an elitist, esoteric religion. Challenging this view, Teigen draws on social network theory and cultural sociology, and engages with the study of lived ancient religion, in order to apprehend how laypeople in Kellis appropriated Manichaean identity and practice in their everyday lives. This perspective, he argues, not only provides a better understanding of Manichaeism: it also has wider implications for how we understand late antique ‘religion’ as a social phenomenon
