La relation a été définie comme un quiproquo sur les promesses mutuelles (Grönroos, 1994). Le contenu des promesses entre fournisseur / client en milieu industriel en France est décrit à travers trois "idéaux-typiques" (Weber, 1922) : donneur d'ordre vers sous-traitant, client contre fournisseur, partenaire avec allié. Une recherche-terrain a tenté de valider ces hypothèses en mettant en évidence les écarts relationnels séparant des acheteurs des constructeurs et équipementiers automobiles et des répondants appartenant à des entreprises fournisseurs de 2° et 3° rang. Les limites de cette approche tiennent aux difficultés méthodologiques visant à saisir la relation en tant qu'objet d'observation opérationnel.
