Book excerpt: L'étude des collisions de noyaux lourds dans le domaine d'énergie 200-2000 MeV par nucléon a pour objectif de déterminer l'équation d'état et les propriétés de la matière nucléaire dense et chaude. L'absence de sensibilité des mesures inclusives à l'équation d'état a conduit les expérimentateurs à construire des détecteurs à grand angle solide capables de mesurer simultanément plusieurs dizaines de particules. De telles mesures permettent d'évaluer le paramètre d'impact et de reconstruire le plan de réaction de chaque collision, et d'accéder à de nouvelles variables dites "globales", qui font intervenir l'ensemble des particules de chaque événement. Dans cette thèse, nous étudions particulièrement les variables "globales" caractérisant un écoulement collectif de la matière nucléaire, dans une direction différente de celle du mouvement relatif cible-projectile, pour les systèmes argon-noyau à 400 et 600 MeV par nucléon et néon-noyau à 400 et 800 MeV par nucléon. Les mesures ont été effectuées avec le détecteur DIOGENE installé auprès de SATURNE. Pour les expériences en argon, deux chambres à plaques parallèles ont été utilisées pour localiser le point d'interaction du faisceau avec la cible, ce qui améliore la reconstruction des trajectoires des particules détectées. Les sections efficaces doublement différentielles, dans le plan de réaction et dans le plan orthogonal au plan de réaction, sont ajustées par des gaussiennes à deux dimensions, afin d'estimer, en s'affranchissant des effets d'acceptante du détecteur, les paramètres caractéristiques de l'écoulement collectif (angle de flot, rapports d'aspect, "paramètre de flot"), qui sont ensuite corrigés des incertitudes liées à la reconstruction du plan de réaction. Pour les collisions argon-noyau, les résultats expérimentaux s'écartent des prédictions du modèle de cas cades intranucléaires de Liège, d'autant plus que l'asymétrie du système est élevée.

Un tel état de la matière a existé dans l'univers une dizaine de microsecondes après l'explosion primordiale. Des pions chargés négativement ont été étudiés ici dans le cadre de l'expérience WA98 au CERN. L'analyse de spectres à une particule et de corrélations de Bose-Einstein ont été combinées en leur appliquant un modèle hydrodynamique pour décrire l'expansion de la source. Une température de 90 MeV et une vitesse d'expansion transverse moyenne égale à 0.5"c" ont été obtenues, impliquant une densité d'énergie initiale de l'ordre de 2 GeV par fermi cube, soit davantage que les prédictions de la CDQ sur réseau pour une transition de phase vers un état déconfiné de la matière nucléaire.

Book excerpt: The post World War II era witnessed a tremendous growth in the research carried out in neutron-induced reactions and especially in neutron capture y-ray studies. This growth was stimulated by the availability of neutron sources, such as reactors and accelerators, and by the development of high resolution y-ray and conversion electron detectors. Today the combination of high flux reactors and precise instrumentation has produced spectral data of exceptional quality, as the pages of these proceedings illustrate. The world-wide community of the practioners of the art of cap ture y-ray spectroscopy has met three times in the last decade: the first international symposium on this subject was held at Studsvik, Sweden in 1969, and the second at Petten, The Netherlands in 1974. A smaller meeting, of mostly u. S. and some European parti cipation, was held at Argonne National Laboratory in 1966. A perusal of the proceedings of these meetings shows the striking ad vances in this now mature field of physics over the last dozen years. Each meeting has seen a small but perceptible increase in the number of papers presented and the number of laboratories repre sented. More importantly, each meeting has documented the increasing impact of (n,y) reasearch, not only on other areas of basic physics, but also on commercial and medical applications of this technology. A total of 29 invited papers and 97 contributed papers were presented at this symposium.
