Book ETUDE DES NON LINEARITES OPTIQUES ET DES EFFETS DE CAPTURE DES PORTEURS DANS LES LASERS SEMI CONDUCTEURS A PUITS QUANTIQUES

Download or read book ETUDE DES NON LINEARITES OPTIQUES ET DES EFFETS DE CAPTURE DES PORTEURS DANS LES LASERS SEMI CONDUCTEURS A PUITS QUANTIQUES written by Jun Yao and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LES LASERS TRANSMETTEURS SONT DES COMPOSANTS CLES DANS LES SYSTEMES DE COMMUNICATIONS OPTIQUES. GRACE A LEURS PERFORMANCES SUPERIEURES, LES LASERS SEMI-CONDUCTEURS A PUIS QUANTIQUES SONT PARTICULIEREMENT INTERESSANTS POUR LES SYSTEMES DE COMMUNICATIONS OPTIQUES A HAUTS DEBITS. CETTE THESE CONTRIBUE A L'ETUDE DU FONCTIONNEMENT ET A L'OPTIMISATION STRUCTURALE DES LASERS A PUITS QUANTIQUES, AINSI QU'A LA RECHERCHE D'UNE NOUVELLE VOIE PERMETTANT D'AMELIORER LES PERFORMANCES DYNAMIQUES DE CES STRUCTURES. DANS UNE HETEROSTRUCTURE A PUITS QUANTIQUES, LA QUANTIFICATION EN ENERGIE DES PORTEURS DANS LA DIRECTION DE CROISSANCE CONDUIT A UNE FAIBLE VALEUR ET UNE FORME EN ESCALIER DE LA DENSITE D'ETATS DE PORTEURS EN FONCTION DE L'ENERGIE. CECI PERMET AUX HETEROSTRUCTURES A PUITS QUANTIQUES D'AVOIR UN GAIN OPTIQUE ET UN GAIN DIFFERENTIEL PLUS IMPORTANTS ET UN FACTEUR DE COUPLAGE PHASE-AMPLITUDE PLUS FAIBLE QUE LES HETEROSTRUCTURES CONVENTIONNELLES. CECI CONDUIT AUSSI A DES NON-LINEARITES DE GAIN PLUS IMPORTANTES DUES AU SPECTRAL-HOLE-BURNING DANS LES HETEROSTRUCTURES A PUITS QUANTIQUES. DU FAIT DU GAIN IMPORTANT, LE COURANT DE SEUIL DANS LES LASERS A PUITS QUANTIQUES EST TRES FAIBLE ET DEPEND FORTEMENT DE LA STRUCTURE DU LASER. UNE METHODE D'OPTIMISATION STRUCTURALE DES LASERS A PUITS QUANTIQUES MULTIPLES EST PROPOSEE AFIN DE MINIMISER LE COURANT DE SEUIL. MALGRE DES NON-LINEARITES DE GAIN PLUS IMPORTANTES, LA FAIBLE VALEUR DU FACTEUR DE COUPLAGE PHASE-AMPLITUDE DANS LES LASERS A PUITS QUANTIQUES LEUR PERMET D'AVOIR UNE LARGEUR SPECTRALE PLUS FAIBLE QUE CELLE DES LASERS CONVENTIONNELS. LES EFFETS DES NON-LINEARITES OPTIQUES ET DE CAPTURE DES PORTEURS SUR LA DYNAMIQUE DES LASERS A PUITS QUANTIQUES A COUCHES DE CONFINEMENTS SEPAREES SONT ETUDIES. LES NON-LINEARITES DE GAIN PLUS IMPORTANTES DANS LES LASERS A PUITS QUANTIQUES CONDUISENT A UN RETRAIT DE LEURS PERFORMANCES DYNAMIQUES. LE PROCESSUS DE CAPTURE QUANTIQUE DES PORTEURS ENTRAINE UNE REDUCTION DU GAIN DIFFERENTIEL EFFECTIF ET UNE AUGMENTATION LEGERE DES NON-LINEARITES EFFECTIVES DE GAIN. IL EST MONTRE QUE, MALGRE CECI, LE GAIN DIFFERENTIEL RESTE TOUJOURS PLUS IMPORTANT DANS LES LASERS A PUITS QUANTIQUES ET PERMET UNE BANDE PASSANTE DE MODULATION MAXIMUM INTRINSEQUE TRES ELEVEE. CEPENDANT, LA BANDE PASSANTE DE MODULTATION REELLE EST LIMITEE PAR LE PROCESSUS DE DIFFUSION DES PORTEURS DANS LES COUCHES DE CONFINEMENT OPTIQUE. EN TENANT COMPTE DE TOUS CES EFFETS, UNE METHODE D'OPTIMISATION STRUCTURALE DES LASERS A PUITS QUANTIQUES MULTIPLES A COUCHES DE CONFINEMENTS SEPAREES EST PROPOSEE AFIN D'AMELIORER LEUR BANDE PASSANTE DE MODULATION. L'ETUDE DU FONCTIONNEMENT DES LASERS A PUITS QUANTIQUE UNIQUE SUR LE DEUXIEME NIVEAU D'ENERGIE MET EN EVIDENCE DES PERFORMANCES DYNAMIQUES SUPERIEURES PAR RAPPORT AU FONCTIONNEMENT SUR LE PREMIER NIVEAU. L'UTILISATION DES LASERS A PUITS QUANTIQUE UNIQUE OPERANT SUR LE SECOND NIVEAU D'ENERGIE EST DONC PROPOSEE COMME UNE METHODE PERMETTANT D'AMELIORER LES PERFORMANCES DYNAMIQUES DE CETTE STRUCTURE. DE NOUVELLES EQUATIONS DE BLOCH GENERALISEES POUR LES SEMI-CONDUCTEURS SONT PROPOSEES A LA FIN DE CE TRAVAIL. ELLES PERMETTENT D'ETUDIER DES PROCESSUS RAPIDES DANS LES SEMI-CONDUCTEURS.

Book Flexoelectricity in Liquid Crystals

Download or read book Flexoelectricity in Liquid Crystals written by Agnes Buka and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2013 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book intends to give a state-of-the-art overview of flexoelectricity, a linear physical coupling between mechanical (orientational) deformations and electric polarization, which is specific to systems with orientational order, such as liquid crystals. Chapters written by experts in the field shed light on theoretical as well as experimental aspects of research carried out since the discovery of flexoelectricity. Besides a common macroscopic (continuum) description the microscopic theory of flexoelectricity is also addressed. Electro-optic effects due to or modified by flexoelectricity as well as various (direct and indirect) measurement methods are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the role of flexoelectricity in pattern-forming instabilities. While the main focus of the book lies in flexoelectricity in nematic liquid crystals, peculiarities of other mesophases (bent-core systems, cholesterics, and smectics) are also reviewed. Flexoelectricity has relevance to biological (living) systems and can also offer possibilities for technical applications. The basics of these two interdisciplinary fields are also summarized.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of cooperative phenomena is one of the dominant features of contem porary physics. Outside physics it has grown to a huge field of interdisciplinary investigation, involving all the natural sciences from physics via biology to socio logy. Yet, during the first few decades following the advent of quantum theory, the pursuit of the single particle or the single atom, as the case may be, has been so fascinating that only a small number of physicists have stressed the importance of collective behaviour. One outstanding personality among these few is Professor HERBERT FROHLICH. He has made an enormous contribution to the modern concept of cooperativity and has stimulated a whole generation of physicists. Therefore, it seemed to the editors very appropriate to dedicate a volume on "cooperative phenomena" to him on the occasion of his official retirement from his university duties. Nevertheless, in the course of carrying out this project, the editors have been somewhat amazed to find that they have covered the essentials of contemporary physics and its im pact on other scientific disciplines. It thus becomes clear how much HERBERT FROHLICH has inspired research workers and has acted as a stimulating discussion partner for others. FROHLICH is one of those exceptional scientists who have wor ked in quite different fields and given them an enormous impetus. Unfortunately, the number of scientists of such distinctive personality has been decreasing in our century.

Book Fluctuations Instabilities and Phase Transitions

Download or read book Fluctuations Instabilities and Phase Transitions written by T. Riste and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the papers presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute held at Geilo, Norway, 11th - 20th April 1975. The institute was the third in a row devoted to phase transitions. The previous two dealt with 2nd- and 1st-order transitions in equilibrium systems and the proceedings have been published.i~ In order to make an overlap wi th those institutes, the first part of this institute was devoted to 1st -or der transitions with an emphasis on the problems of metast abi l i t y and instability en countered i n spinodal decomposition, nucleation etc. The main topic was, however, that of non-equilibrium systems, and the present institute was to our knowledge the first one devoted to the physics of such systems. The discovery of the analogy between phase transitions in equilibrium systems and instabilities in non-equilibrium systems was first made by Rolf Landauer in 1961 and later independently by others. The analogy was first pointed out for electronic devices (tunnel diodes, Gunn oscillators, lasers, etc. ) and the treatment of hydrodynamic instabilities followed later.

Book excerpt: In this fascinating book, Nobel Prize winner Pierre-Gilles de Gennes wittily captures the lives of personalities from both the academic and the industrial world in delightful bite-size stories. Most of the characters in this collection are like those in Aesop''s fables, but in modern-day research settings. The book provides a critical account of aberrations (fortunately rare) of the scientific community. Many lessons can be drawn from the stories. For the young researcher, this book is like a telescope: for seeing other human beings beyond his or her laboratory. For the administrator, this book is like a microscope: for seeing inside the human beings huge and complex structures. However, like Aesop''s fables, you would not offer the book as a gift to anyone other than a close and wise friend. Petit Point is not a book to be devoured in a single sitting. It is one to be savored and reflected upon OCo it shows what the world may be like and what we ourselves may become. It is like a mirror OCo to be visited from time to time. Book The Physics of Complex Systems

Download or read book The Physics of Complex Systems written by Franco Mallamace and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is widely known that complex systems and complex materials comprise a major interdisciplinary scientific field that draws on mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, and medicine as well as such social sciences as economics. The role of statistical physics in this new field has been expanding. Statistical physics has shown how phenomena and processes in different research areas that have long been assumed to be unrelated can have a common description. Through the application of statistical physics, methods developed for studying order phenomena in simple systems and processes have been generalized to more complex systems. This volume focuses on recent advances and perspectives in the physics of complex systems and provides both an overview of the field and a more detailed examination of the new ideas and unsolved problems that are currently attracting the attention of researchers. This book should be a useful reference work for anyone interested in this area, whether beginning graduate student or advanced research professional. It provides up-to-date reviews on cutting-edge topics compiled by leading authorities and is designed to both broaden the reader's competence within their own field and encourage the exploration of new problems in related fields.

Book Simple Views On Condensed Matter

Download or read book Simple Views On Condensed Matter written by Pierre-gilles De Gennes and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1992-08-06 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The works of the 1991 Nobel prize winner in Physics, Pierre-Gilles de Gennes, have transformed condensed matter physics. Over the last three decades, he has left his indelible mark on an astonishing variety of condensed matter topics — magnets, superconductors, liquid crystals, polymers, interfaces, wetting and adhesions, and chirality. In doing so, he has bridged the gap between solid state physics and physical chemistry, and has forged close links between experimentalists and theoreticians. In awarding him the 1991 Nobel prize for his theoretical studies on liquid crystals and polymers, the Nobel foundation has paid tribute to his undoubted genius in discovering mathematical simplicity and elegance in the most complex and “messy” of systems. His deep insights into these fields have enabled others to exploit liquid crystals in technology and have paved the way for physicists to work on polymers.SIMPLE VIEWS ON CONDENSED MATTER presents a personal selection of the major works of de Gennes. It comes complete with afterthoughts by the author on his main papers, explaining their successes or weaknesses, and the current views on each special problem. This collector's volume contains all the important works of de Gennes which have made a lasting impact on our understanding of condensed matter, and serves as an essential reference book for all condensed matter physicists and physical chemists. It also bears testimony to the genius of a remarkable man, and should be a source of inspiration for aspiring scientists around the world.
