Book excerpt: Cette thèse traite des phénomènes d'endommagement induits sous fort flux laser en régime nanoseconde, dans les substrats optiques et composants multidiélectriques pour le proche et moyen infrarouge. Un banc de mesure de l'endommagement laser dans la bande 2-5 μm a été développé afin d'obtenir des mesures précises avec un contrôle strict des conditions de tir. Les modèles permettant l'ajustement des données expérimentales ont été améliorés. L'influence sur la tenue au flux laser à 1064 nm et 2 μm des procédés de préparation des substrats optiques ont été étudiés pour la silice et le ZnSe permettant la réalisation de composants à haute tenue au flux. Une étude comparative de différentes techniques de dépôt pour la tenue au flux de monocouches de silice a permis de montrer l'intérêt de la technique de pulvérisation par faisceau d'ions. Une analyse détaillée des conditions de réalisation des empilements multidiélectriques permet de mieux comprendre leur tenue au flux à 1064 nm et 2 μm.

Un travail est tout d'abord effectué sur la métrologie d'endommagement, afin d'obtenir des mesures précises et fiables des courbes de probabilité d'endommagement tout en contrôlant scrupuleusement les conditions de tir. Ensuite, nous montrons que les densités de sites initiateurs de l'endommagement laser sont de quelques dizaines par (10 micro-m)3 dans le volume des verres, et de un parmicro-m3 cube dans le cas des surfaces. Cette analyse associée à une étude morphologique nous permet de discuter de la nature de ces précurseurs et des processus mis en jeu. L'influence de la longueur d'onde (UV à IR) et de tirs répétés est également analysée. Des simulations sont menées afin d'étudier les mécanismes d'initiation d'endommagement sur ces sites. Ces travaux nous permettent d'estimer la taille des sites précurseurs en fonction de leur indice imaginaire et de discuter de leur possible détection.

Tout d'abord, nous validons l'hypothèse des centres précurseurs de l'endommagement laser. Ensuite, nous développons un microscope photothermique haute résolution afin de détecter de façon non destructive les nano-défauts absorbants susceptibles d'initier le claquage. Le couplage de ce dispositif à un banc d'endommagement permet d'étudier avec précision l'évolution de défauts modèles (inclusions métalliques) lors d'une irradiation laser. Les données expérimentales sont comparées à des simulations d'interaction laser matière afin de mettre en évidence les mécanismes initiateurs. La connaissance du comportement de ces défauts modèles lors d'une irradiation laser et l'étude systématique de la " fatigue " des matériaux réels soumis à des tirs répétés permettent finalement de définir des procédés de conditionnement laser capables d'améliorer leur tenue au flux.
