Book excerpt: La sensibilité du Pouvoir Thermoélectrique (PTE) à de nombreux paramètres, et son caractère non destructif, permettent d'envisager pour cette technique une utilisation plus courante concernant la caractérisation des métaux. Même si le principe de la mesure de PTE est relativement simple, l'interprétation et la compréhension de cette grandeur pour un matériau donné, sont complexes, car le PTE est influencé par de multiples facteurs. Cette thèse a pour objectif de déterminer dans quelle mesure certains paramètres influencent la valeur du PTE des métaux. Nous avons montré que le PTE des métaux nobles évolue, dans la plupart des cas, linéairement avec l'application d'une contrainte uniaxiale. Le cas des aciers est plus particulier, puisqu'un comportement hystérétique a été observé pour le PTE en fonction de la contrainte. Ce comportement peut être modifié en faisant varier certaines caractéristiques des aciers : taux d'écrouissage et taux de carbone. En étudiant l'influence du champ magnétique sur le PTE des aciers, nous avons pu mettre en évidence que ce sont les propriétés ferromagnétiques des aciers qui sont à l'origine de cette forme hystérétique. Un appareil visant à mesurer le PTE à très basse température et en fonction de la température (4,2-400 k) a également été mis au point dans le cadre de cette thèse. Le prototype a été validé sur des métaux purs dans la gamme 77-300 K, pour des échantillons d'une dizaine de centimetres. Son utilisation future promet des avancées en ce qui concerne la déconvolution des différents parametres influençant le PTE à température ambiante.
