Les recouvrements des communications sont des techniques très utilisées dans le but d'accélérer les exécutions de programmes parallèles. Notre première contribution est l'étude détaillée d'une implantation efficace de la bibliothèque de communication MPI sur une grappe de PC interconnectée par un réseau rapide. Cette étude montre tout d'abord que le matériel permet de recouvrir le transfert des données sur le réseau. Dans un deuxième temps, nous montrons pourquoi le logiciel de communication inter-processus, MPI, empêche le recouvrement des communications par le calcul. La sémantique des communications et l'implication du processeur de calcul dans la communication en sont les principales causes.Notre deuxième contribution est la validation des équations de gain d'un pipeline modélisées par Zory, par l'intermédiaire de l'application Sweep3D. Cette application nous a permis de montrer que sur des données de grande taille, l'utilisation de pipelines logiciels sur P processeurs peut apporter un gain en temps d'execution s'approchant d'un facteur P. Notre troisième contribution est l'évaluation a priori de la meilleurs configuration de l'espace des processeurs, c'est-à-dire mono, bi ou tridimensionnel. En établissant les équations des temps d'exécution d'une application par vague pour ces trois types de distribution en fonction des paramètres de la machine cible et de l'application, nous pouvons déterminer la distribution qui donnera le plus petit temps d'exécution.

Nous proposons notamment de nouveaux algorithmes pour réaliser une transposition de matrices carrées allouées par blocs, sur différentes topologies de réseaux d'interconnexion. Nous avons également étudié le problème de l'échange total. Ce schéma de communication se retrouve fréquemment dans les versions parallèles d'algorithmes numériques (comme dans l'algorithme du gradient conjugué). Nous proposons des algorithmes efficaces d'échange total pour des topologies toriques. La deuxième voie qui a été explorée consiste à recouvrir les communications par du calcul. Nous avons étudié quelques principes algorithmiques de base permettant de masquer au mieux les communications. Ceux-ci sont basés, notamment, sur des techniques d'enchainement de phases de calcul et de communication, ainsi que sur le re-ordonnancement local de tâches afin d'optimiser le recouvrement. Ces techniques sont illustrées sur des algorithmes parallèles de calcul de transformée de Fourier. Les différentes implantations de ces algorithmes sur de nombreuses machines parallèles à mémoire distribuée (T3D de Cray, SP2 d'IBM, iPSC-860 et Paragon d'Intel) montrent le gain en temps d'exécution apporté par ces méthodes

Book excerpt: This thesis focuses on iterative methods for the treatment of the steady state neutron transport equation in slab geometry, bounded convex domain of Rn (n = 2,3) and in 1-D spherical geometry. We introduce a generic Alternate Direction Implicit (ADI)-like iterative method based on positive definite and m-accretive splitting (PAS) for linear operator equations with operators admitting such splitting. This method converges unconditionally and its SOR acceleration yields convergence results similar to those obtained in presence of finite dimensional systems with matrices possessing the Young property A. The proposed methods are illustrated by a numerical example in which an integro-differential problem of transport theory is considered. In the particular case where the positive definite part of the linear equation operator is self-adjoint, an upper bound for the contraction factor of the iterative method, which depends solely on the spectrum of the self-adjoint part is derived. As such, this method has been successfully applied to the neutron transport equation in slab and 2-D cartesian geometry and in 1-D spherical geometry. The self-adjoint and m-accretive splitting leads to a fixed point problem where the operator is a 2 by 2 matrix of operators. An infinite dimensional adaptation of minimal residual and preconditioned minimal residual algorithms using Gauss-Seidel, symmetric Gauss-Seidel and polynomial preconditioning are then applied to solve the matrix operator equation. Theoretical analysis shows that the methods converge unconditionally and upper bounds of the rate of residual decreasing which depend solely on the spectrum of the self-adjoint part of the operator are derived. The convergence of theses solvers is illustrated numerically on a sample neutron transport problem in 2-D geometry. Various test cases, including pure scattering and optically thick domains are considered.
