That there is no ordinance in the social legislation which does not confer comfort for Obedience, and no well-established usage that has not been founded for that reason. There might have been an excuse, or some semblance of a cause, for our borrowing an etiquette from England, while our own habits were unfounded. There is certainly none now. Ameri can ways are running in well-oiled grooves; American customs, American hours are the arbiters, and the only arbiters, of America's code of man ners. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Etiquette, the American Code of Manners: A Study of the Usages, Laws, and Observances Which Govern Intercourse in the Best Circles of American Society Many books of etiquette are as useless as Ollen dorfl' 's French Grammar, which gives the scholar phrases which be can never use, as llave you the cotton nightcap oi' the shoemaker, instead oi? Telling him how to ask for his dinner, or teaching him how to form a sentence. The experts of society are, on the contrary, as certainly skilled in the laws which govern that great world as are the oilicers of the army in the regulation code. Oiiicers of the army know not alone the art oifi war, but they know the etiquette of the camp - the proper dress, the salute due to each oiiiccr. It is a study. No man can enter the army from the ranks of civil life, without committing some ilagrant solecism which, to a regularly-educated oillcer, would be impossible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Domestic Manners of the Americans It is easy to imagine the total want of beauty in such a landscape; but yet the form and hue of the trees and plants, so new to us, added to the long privation we had endured of all sights and sounds of land, made even these swampy shores seem beautiful. We were, however, impatient to touch as well 'as see the land; but the navigation from the Balize to New Orleans is difficult and tedious, and the two days that it occupied appeared longer than any we had passed on board. Book The Book of Business Etiquette Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Book of Business Etiquette Classic Reprint written by Nella Braddy Henney and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book of Business Etiquette was written by author Nella Henney's, who's goal in writing this book was to introduce the basics of appropriate business etiquette to the American masses at a time when more and more people were joining the white-collar workforce. The book begins with a general introduction to the new American businessman. The author's light-hearted approach to the subject is apparent early, describing the businessman as, "not so dashing perhaps as a knight in armor or a soldier in uniform, but he is not without the noble (and ignoble) qualities which have characterized the tribe of man since the world began." Following this brief introduction, the book tackles a series of specific aspects of etiquette, from table manners and telephone etiquette, to proper manners while travelling and large-group dining behaviors. While the book seems primarily directed at men, Henney concludes her work with a chapter specifically for the working woman. Business etiquette is constantly evolving, and what may have been considered good etiquette in the 1920's is no longer the norm. Thus, the real value of this work is the portrait it paints of a specific time in history. Reading Henney's work will transport you back to the roaring 20's, that brief postwar time where business was booming and thousands of Americans entered the white-collar workforce for the very first time. While no longer useful for its intended purpose, The Book of Business Etiquette remains an entertaining and insightful read. The modern reader may chuckle at some of the passages and will surely delight in others discussing the do's and don't's of business etiquette in the 1920's. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from "Dame Curtsey's" Book of EtiquetteIt is always an acceptable clue to people who are being introduced if the hostess IS thoughtful enough to mention some thing that will start the conversation, as, Mrs. Edwards has just returned from Europe, going over much Of the ground you covered last year; or, Mr. Green is devoted to golf, so I know that you will have much ln common. It is these personal touches that make a woman popular in society. When two women are to be introduced the elder Of the two is always addressed, but when there is no marked inequality in age or distinction either name is mentioned first. The proper response to an introduction is, I am happy to meet you 0r I am very glad to meet you. If two women are seated and the hostess makes an introduction, both should rise, but if one is Old, or an invalid, it is proper to remain seated. A woman need not rise when a man is presented, but a man always rises, and Shakes hands when presented to another man.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Men and Manners in America My next occupation was to look over my letters of introduction. Of these I found above thirty addressed to New York, and being by no means anxious to become involved in so wide a vortex of acquaintance, I request ed one of my American fellow-passengers to select such, as, from his local knowledge, he imagined might prove of more immediate service to a traveller like myself. In consequence of this arrangement, about half the let ters with which the kindness of my friends had furnished me, were discarded, and I can truly say, that the very warm and obliging reception I experienced from those to whom I forwarded introductions, left me no room to r ret the voluntary limitation of their number. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Success in Society: A Manual of Good Manners, Social Etiquette, Rules The great purpose Of the rules of etiquette is to inculcate good manners, and thereby render people mutually agreeable. It is, therefore, especially incumbent upon all Americans to know and Obey them. We are all forced, in spite of individual Objections and protests, to put into practice the national theory of equality. We must mix together, and it therefore behooves us, for our own comfort, to make the mixture as smooth and agree able as possible. In no nation in the world are general good manners so indispensable as in this democratic country. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
