Book Christian Ethics and the Moral Psychologies

Download or read book Christian Ethics and the Moral Psychologies written by Don S. Browning and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2006-05-17 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest in psychology permeates our culture, with psychological solutions advanced for a host of moral dilemmas. How should ethically minded Christians include insights from such disciplines as psychoanalysis, cognitive moral development, and neuroscience in their theological reflection? Don Browning offers a serious proposal for combining these disciplines with the best in ethical reflection from a Christian standpoint. Along the way, he introduces readers to the moral psychology work of Sigmund Freud, Carol Gilligan, Antonio Damasio, and others, opening up a dialogue between their work and the hermeneutics of Hans-Georg Gadamer and Paul Ricoeur. Browning also recognizes the potential limits of the conversation between Christian ethics and the moral psychologies, pointing out where they must diverge.

Book Augustine of Hippo

Download or read book Augustine of Hippo written by Virgilio Pacioni and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Saint Augustine's philosophy, often only studied in a particular historical context, has once again shown itself to be extraordinarily modern. Virgilio Pacioni, an Augustinian scholar at the Patristic Institute Augustinianum in Rome devoted to this great Father of the Church, takes advantage of two avenues of interpretation to examine Augustine's philosophical thought: an anthropological one benefitting from the innovative analyses of Nello Cipriani (who was initially inspired by the insights of Gerard O'Daly), and a formal, logical one enhanced by the contributions of Michele Malatesta. Cipriani's research has made it possible to take a new look at all the branches of philosophy relating to anthropology - concerning the notion of human nature, the conception of history, and political questions. Malatesta's studies and, in particular, the pioneering articles on the Contra Academicos, have provided the rigorous tools needed to understand logic, especially that of the Stoics, used by the Bishop of Hippo. Thus we have been able to discover that Augustine the rhetorician was also a rigorous master of logic who did not base rational investigation on feeling or improvisation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Socialism of Fools, Michele Battini focuses on the critical moment during the Enlightenment in which anti-Jewish stereotypes morphed into a sophisticated, modern social anti-Semitism. He recovers the potent anti-Jewish, anticapitalist propaganda that cemented the idea of a Jewish conspiracy in the European mind and connects it to the atrocities that characterized the Jewish experience in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Beginning in the eighteenth century, counter-Enlightenment intellectuals and intransigent Catholic writers singled out Jews for conspiring to exploit self-sustaining markets and the liberal state. These ideas spread among socialist and labor movements in the nineteenth century and intensified during the Long Depression of the 1870s. Anti-Jewish anticapitalism then migrated to the Habsburg Empire with the Christian Social Party; to Germany with the Anti-Semitic Leagues; to France with the nationalist movements; and to Italy, where Revolutionary Syndicalists made anti-Jewish anticapitalism the basis of an alliance with the nationalists. Exemplified best in the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, the infamous document that "leaked" Jewish plans to conquer the world, the Jewish-conspiracy myth inverts reality and creates a perverse relationship to historical and judicial truth. Isolating the intellectual roots of this phenomenon and its contemporary resonances, Battini shows us why, so many decades after the Holocaust, Jewish people continue to be a powerful political target.

Book excerpt: "The Mafia? What is the Mafia? Something you eat? Something you drink? I don't know the Mafia. I have never seen it." So said Mommo Piromalli, a 'Ndrangheta crime boss, to a journalist in the seventies. In Mafiacraft, Deborah Puccio-Den explores the Mafia's reliance on the force of silence, and undertakes a new form of ethnographic inquiry that focuses on the questions, rather than the answers. For Puccio-Den, the Mafia is not a stable social fact, but a cognitive event shaped by actions of silence. Rather than inquiring about what has previously been written or said, she explores the imaginative power of silence and how it gives consistency to special kinds of social ties that draw their strength from a state of indetermination. What methods might anthropologists use to investigate silence and to understand the life of the denied, the unspeakable, and the unspoken? How do they resist, fight, or capitulate to the strength of words, or to the force of law? In Mafiacraft, Puccio-Den's addresses these questions with a fascinating anthropology of silence that opens up new ground for the study of the world's most famous criminal organization.
