Pero para comprenderlo no estará de más averiguar en qué negocio nos estamos embarcando, y preguntar a liberales, demócratas, socialistas, tecnólogos, representacionistas y participacionistas qué idea de democracia ofrecen en que valga la pena profundizar. Curiosamente mientras los partidarios de la democracia política representativa discuten con los de la participativa, la respuesta parece venir hoy de la sociedad civil, de aquellos sectores en que los hombres concretos, raíz de cualquier forma de organización social, exigen ser tenidos significativamente en cuenta en las decisiones que les afectan, que es en definitiva la exigencia de una democracia radical. Son , pues, los distintos ámbitos de la llamada " ética aplicada " -La bioética y la GenÉtica, la ética de la empresa y de la educación, la ética de la información y la ecoética- los que están que se realicen los ideales de una democracia que vaya a la raíz. Pero eso sí: no cualquierética aplicada, sino aquella que entiende, desde una determinada antroponomía, que cada hombre es un interlocutor válido, al que es ineludible tener en cuenta. La realización de una democracia radical exige, entonces, emprender en todos los ámbitos e instituciones una revolución ética.

Pero lo que sucederá en el futuro dependerá en muy buena medida de cómo ejerzamos nuestra libertad, si desde un "nosotros" incluyente, o desde una fragmentación de individuos en la que los ideólogos juegan para hacerse con el poder. Es en este punto donde demostraremos que hemos aprendido algo. Por primera vez en la historia el género humano se ve confrontado con retos universales y tiene que responder desde distintas instancias, una de ellas, la ética, porque es la que se ocupa de los fines. No basta entonces, aunque son necesarias, las normas y costumbres morales de los niveles micro de las sociedades, es necesaria, por primera vez en la historia una ética para el macronivel, que se haga cargo de los fines comunes de la humanidad: una ética cosmopolita. Adela Cortina, catedrática de Filosofía y premio Nacional de ensayo 2015, argumenta que en estos tiempos de pandemia nos encontramos frente a una catástrofe social y económica que requiere una ética potente. No sólo la mano visible del Estado, no sólo la mano invisible de la economía sino, y muy especialmente, la mano intangible de las virtudes cívicas y de un êthos democrático que nos ayude a hacer frente a esta situación excepcional. Pronto se hizo famoso con la publicación, en 1894, de El prisionero de Zenda, que gozó de un inmenso favor popular. Y pocas semanas después de la publicación de tal obra, Anthony Hope logró renovar su extraordinario éxito con The Dolly Dialogues Algunas de sus obras fueron llevadas al cine. Falleció en 1933.

Book excerpt: CHRISTOPH REHMANN-SUTTER, MARCUS DÜWELL, DIETMAR MIETH When we placed “finitude”, “limits of human existence” as a motto over a round of discussion on biomedicine and bioethics (which led to this collection of essays) we did not know how far this would lead us into methodological quandaries. However, we felt intuitively that an interdisciplinary approach including social and cultural sciences would have an advantage over a solely disciplinary (philosophical or theological) analysis. Bioethics, if it is to have adequate discriminatory power, should include sensitivity to the cultural contexts of biomedicine, and also to the cultural contexts of bioethics itself. Context awareness, of course, is not foreign to philosophical or theological bioethics, for the simple reason that the issues tackled in the debates (as in other fields of ethics) could not be adequately understood outside their contexts. Moral issues are always accompanied by contexts. When we try to unpack them – which is necessary to make them accessible to ethical discussion – we are regularly confronted with the fact that in removing too much of the context we do not clarify an issue, but make it less comprehensible. The context – at least some essential parts of it – is intrinsic to the issue. Unpacking in ethics is therefore a different procedure. It does not mean peeling the context off, but rather identifying which contextual elements are essential for an understanding of the key moral aspects of the issue, and explaining how they establish its particular character.

The universities had an annual intensive programme in which students and teachers of all universities came together to have try-outs of parts of the modules. These programmes contributed strongly to the network building of researchers, teachers and students. The activities have given a strong stimulus to the implementation of Education for Democratic Intercultural Citizenship in the participating universities and in educational organisations worldwide. The experiences show both the necessity and the relevance of this topic and this kind of collaboration.
