In modern, intensive husbandry systems, the behaviour pigs would show in natural environments cannot be expressed to the degree that is necessary for the animals to maintain a positive emotional state. Health and behaviour problems arise in intensive pig husbandry, leading to stress and negative emotional states in the animals. This animal welfare problem fuels growing concerns of the public. As negative emotional states, such as stress, are more intensely expressed and potentially life threatening, they are easier to study. The expression of positive emotion, even though it is expressed more subtle, is no less important. This study was therefore conducted with the objective to identify, elicit and measure behavioural and physiological indicators of positive emotion in pigs. With the ability to facilitate a positive emotional state, the welfare of pigs kept in intensive livestock production systems can be greatly improved.

New technologies have been proposed to monitor the welfare of animals providing more objective data, but there are still very few tools that have been validated. This Research Topic aims to collect reviews of the literature on animal welfare topics, related to all species, from companion animals to livestock, and from laboratory animals to wild animals. The invited reviews, metanalysis of the literature, should highlight the acquired knowledge and the current gaps of knowledge within this field. Our main goal is to identify which topics were devoted more scientific attention in recent years concerning animal welfare and identify which topics are still overlooked by current research.

The wonder is not so much that the visual system, like other body systems, has been able to adapt in this way, but rather that these adaptations have taken such a variety of forms. In a previous volume in this series (VII/I) Eakin expressed admiration for the diversity of invertebrate photoreceptors. A comparable situation exists for the vertebrate eye as a whole and one object of this volume is to present to the reader the nature of this diversity. One result of this diversification of ocular structures and properties is that the experimental biologist has available a number of systems for study that are unique or especially favorable for the investigation of particular questions in visual science or neurobiology. This volume includes some examples of progress made by the use of such specially selected vertebrate systems. It is our hope that this comparative approach will continue to reveal new and useful preparations for the examination of important questions.

Indeed, it might be argued that it is only during the last 5-10 years that it has come to merit being regarded as a true science, rather than a collection of procedures for protecting the environment through management and monitoring of pollutant discharges into the environment. The term 'ecotoxicology' was first coined in the late sixties by Prof. Truhaut, a toxicologist who had the vision to recognize the importance of investigating the fate and effects of chemicals in ecosystems. At that time, ecotoxicology was considered a sub-discipline of medical toxicology. Subsequently, several attempts have been made to portray ecotoxicology in a more realistic light. Notably, both F. Moriarty (1988) and F. Ramade (1987) emphasized in their books the broad basis of ecotoxicology, encompassing chemical and radiation effects on all components of ecosystems. In doing so, they and others have shifted concern from direct chemical toxicity to man, to the far more subtle effects that pollutant chemicals exert on natural biota. Such effects potentially threaten the existence of all life on Earth. Although I have identified the sixties as the era when ecotoxicology was first conceived as a coherent subject area, it is important to acknowledge that studies that would now be regarded as ecotoxicological are much older. Wherever people's ingenuity has led them to change the face of nature significantly, it has not escaped them that a number of biological con sequences, often unfavourable, ensue.
