Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ethnology of a-Kamba and Other East African Tribes In the face of the monumental monographs of Haddon, Rivers and others, it is with great reluctance that the observations contained in this work are being published, and I am only persuaded to do so by the assurance of various scientific advisers who are of opinion that any first-hand observations of this kind should be made accessible to those who are working at these subjects. Part I is an attempt at a systematic survey of the A-Kamba tribe of British East Africa. Although one of the first up-country tribes to be administered, I believe that very little has up to now been known about their customs and beliefs. Dr Krapf travelled among them over 40 years ago and their country has been traversed by many travellers, who hurriedly passed through, anxious to push on to the great lakes, to Kenya or some other place which possessed a fascination for the explorer. A certain amount of information about them is buried away in blue books and official reports, but, as far as I know, no effort has been made to carry out a systematic study of the tribe. Being for the last year and a half responsible for their administration I thought it desirable that some such attempt should be made, and this work is the result of several short journeys in their country; my only regret is that I have not been able to personally witness many of their important ceremonies, but the descriptions have been obtained at first-hand from some of the more important chiefs and checked as far as possible. It is only in the case of particular enquiries, specially adapted to the various races to be monographically studied, that we can go more deeply into detail. On several points, however, the headings of a general type have been left aside in order to pursue indications already somewhat detailed in character. Every science has its special methods, and ethnology has become a science. Such methods cannot be improvised, neither can they be guessed at, at least without the help of some examples of practical work. It was impossible that the least attempt at methodology, properly speaking, should enter into the wording of simple prolegomena such as these. But it was possible and in fact necessary to guide the work of investigators, who might be unfamiliar with this type of research and out of touch with recent discus sions in the domain of anthropology. Certain groups of facts or details have therefore been selected here or there in variouschapters, and more minutely analysed. This Should indicate the manner in which a given question should be tackled and sug gest similar treatment for those questions which are merely mentioned in our list. Book excerpt: First published in 1922, the author of this book was for many years a Provincial Commissioner of what was then the Kenya Colony whose main objects were to place on record the results of investigations made among the native tribes in British East Africa, particularly among the Kikuyu and Kamba people, and to endeavour from a study of their ceremonial with regard to sacrifice and taboo, to obtain a better insight into the principles which underlie the outward forms and ceremonies of their ritual. Together with natural religion and magic, the author discusses a variety of social activities influenced by religious beliefs, such as the organisation of councils, ceremonial oaths, war and peace, dances, legends, and the position of women in tribal society. The functions of some of the practices are self-evident or can be explained within the limits of psychological or anthropological terms, whilst others remain unexplained and seem inexplicable, even futile. The author’s careful analysis of this last class provides interesting ethnological comment, for in seeking a better understanding of the psychology of one particular race, he draws attention also to analogous conditions of religious customs existing amongst other widely differing races. In the last chapter, ‘Quo Vadis’, added to the second edition of 1938, the author furthers his discussion of East Africa after the war. Together with the factual analysis of the first three parts, these additional observations, invaluable once to administrators and all concerned in colonial government, today prove their value not only for students of East Africa, but for all those endeavouring to arrive at an adjustment between the old native social structure and the extraneous forces now operating with ever increasing intensity.
