Book excerpt: Beginning in 1949, China responded to so-called Uyghur separatism and the quest for Eastern Turkestan (Xinjiang) independence as a domestic problem. Since the mid-1990s, however, when it became aware of the international aspects of this problem, Beijing has begun to pressure Turkey to limit its support for Uyghur activism. Aimed not only at cultural preservation but also at Eastern Turkestan independence, Uyghur activism remained unnoticed until the 1990s, despite the establishment in 1971 of Sino-Turkish diplomatic relations. Possibly less concerned about the Uyghur threat than it suggests, Beijing may simply be using the Uyghurs to intimidate and manipulate Turkey and other governments, primarily those in Central Asia.

Thus far, however, the lack of international community resolve to present a common position, and the intransigence of both the Serbian and Kosovar parties, has enabled the belligerent leaders to manipulate the situation. This thesis will explore Serbian and Kosovar historical national identities and their development, and the modern nationalist movements in the region and their leaders. Finally, the utility of the current leaders and levers that may be used by the international community to pressure or influence them will be evaluated. Presenting policy options and analysis for conflict resolution without the use of peacekeeping military forces, this thesis highlights the most feasible options which allow for U.S. and international community involvement, while enabling the Serbs and Kosovars to solve the crisis in a way that is amenable to both parties and will bring long-term stability to the region.

The absence of or sincere Interfaith Diplomacy was the greatest of all that the book discovered hence, recommending emphatically, the Strategic Role of Interfaith Diplomacy as the latest approach to managing ethno-religious conflicts such as these happening in Jos and beyond.

Sociological and historical connections in particular are eschewed, in favor of national (hi)stories and short-term analysis. Yet actors tend to found their intents and actions on complex kinetics, rooted in their core identities. To study the way identity is built and expressed opens the way for a more comprehensive analysis of actors on the international stage, through a recontextualization of social competition and the mechanisms of fear, hate and sacrifice. These kinetics also shine a light on the new, contemporary facets of power, which no longer exists as a unilateral flux but rather as a combination of action, expression and shaping of the superstructure. The example of the East China Sea, one of the most crucial lynch points of the 21st century, offers concrete evidence of this model's heuristic and prospective value, and opens the way for further development of analysis of complex systems as a science.
