Book The Golden Age Illusion

Download or read book The Golden Age Illusion written by Michael John Webber and published by Guilford Press. This book was released on 1996-09-20 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happened to the so-called "golden age" of the postwar boom? Unprecedented rates of economic growth, profitability, and wage increases during the 1950s and 60s have given way to a global capitalist economy in disarray. Reassessing common interpretations of postwar economic history and geography, this book focuses on the evolution of the global economy from the 1950s to the present. Based on extensive research, the book assesses histories of growth, profitability, and technological change in core industrial economies (Japan and the USA), raw material dependent economies (Australia and Canada), and several newly industrializing countries (Brazil, South Korea, and Taiwan). The authors build on standard models of economic change to incorporate new developments in regional dynamics: they use nonlinear, nonequilibrium, and evolutionary arguments to frame discussions of profit rates, technological change, and interregional capital flows.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mobility regimes in which migratory careers of highly educated women are embedded have a high impact on the invisible sway between privileges and vulnerabilities in situated socio-political contexts. Between 1960s and 1990s, highly educated women began moving on their own, but, despite their qualifications, they nonetheless faced big challenges, some of which have not completely disappeared. Are highly educated migrant women really privileged? This book explores the empirical dilemma between privileges and vulnerability in the framework of conceptual transformations of the highly skilled migration and human mobility in history from the post-industrial era to the present. The book’s subject matter shows an existing sway between privileges and vulnerability in the construction process of the “migratory careers” of highly educated women, which depends on the articulation of macro, meso and micro factors and driving women historically to shape heterogeneous readaptation responses in different geo-political contexts. The case study of the Basque Country in Spain is presented as emblematic reflection of the global economy conformation. The history explored from a gender perspective shows that a critical understanding of the structures of opportunities and constraints influencing women’s mobility is relevant to overcome stereotypes and generate gender-sensitive policies for the socio-economic inclusion of more vulnerable groups.

Download or read book Developing a Cross cultural Law Curriculum written by Anthony O'Donnell (LLB.) and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work makes the case that cross cultural issues are central to the purposes of legal education, and no longer can such issues be seen as an add-on to the traditional curriculum. The authors argue instead for a critical multiculturalism that is attuned to questions of gender, class, sexuality and social justice, and that must inform the whole law school curriculum.

Book Global Restructuring

Download or read book Global Restructuring written by Robert Harold Fagan and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1994 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the early 1990s, a quiet controversy began in Australia about the nature of the ongoing global economic restructuring process, how it was initiated, and how it will affect the continent's economy and society. Global Restructuring: The Australian Experience offers a succinct, authoritative introduction to the various issues involved in this complex and important topic, one that has rekindled the debate about the future role of transnational corporations, foreign investment, the competitiveness of Australian production on world markets, and government's role in regulating global change and its impact on local economies. Bringing a geographical perspective to the debate, the authors of Global Restructuring define specific links between the processes of global change and transformations within Australia. They discuss the uneven impacts of change on major Australian economic and social sectors, and present insightful case studies of the food processing, iron and steel production, motor vehicle manufacturing, and banking industries. Provocative and fascinating, Global Restructuring adds an important voice to this emerging topic, and will be welcomed by students and researchers in social and economic geography, environmental studies, agricultural economics, and political economy.
