Book African Catholicism and Hermeneutics of Culture

Download or read book African Catholicism and Hermeneutics of Culture written by Joseph Ogbonnaya and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-08-05 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of Christianity in the non-Western world reveals a demographic shift in the center of Christianity from the Northern Hemisphere to the South. But the contradictory aspect of the massive African conversion to Christian faith is the grinding poverty level in Africa. This condition raises important theological and ecclesiological questions that demand urgent answers. Therefore, the research objectives of this book are to examine African Catholicism's involvement in human promotion and to seek a new way of theologizing Christianity that moves sub-Saharan African peoples to action against the massive injustices that keep them poor. Drawing on Africae Munus, the Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation of the Second African Synod (2011), and Bernard Lonergan's notion of culture, African Catholicism and Hermeneutics of Culture argues that to truly be "the spiritual 'lung' of humanity," African Catholicism must appropriate the Christian message to transform African attitudes and personhood and so foster a self-reliant commitment to integral African development.

Book Community and Trinity in Africa

Download or read book Community and Trinity in Africa written by Ibrahim S. Bitrus and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-31 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Community and Trinity in Africa recasts the African tradition of community from a theological perspective. Ibrahim S. Bitrus explains the new Trinitarian hermeneutics of God as the fundamental framework for constructing an authentic African tradition of community. The book explores the tripartite structural evils of the patriarchal tradition, the Big Man/Woman syndrome, and ethnic-religious nepotism, which distort the African tradition of community. It analyzes Trinitarian proposals that liberate the distorted African tradition of community and concludes that an authentic African tradition of community is one that embodies individuality without libertarian individualism, communality without patriarchy, and mutual multi-ethnic and religious relations without nepotism and domination. Arguing that the communion of the Triune God is not a moral ideal, but a gift for restructuring the church and society, this book is an essential read for scholars of African Christianity and Christian theology.

Book The Possibility of Convivence in Nigeria

Download or read book The Possibility of Convivence in Nigeria written by Felix Ikeagwuchi Agbara and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2011 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the present-day democratic government's commitment to human rights, socio-cultural and religious clashes still pose a threat to Nigeria. As a panacea a split according to ethnic and religious boundaries has been suggested; on the other hand upholding the different strands might spell greater benefits for the country's development. The basic assumption of both views is that ethnic and religious pluralism have led to conflicts, but that they are fuelled by politics, inequitable distribution of economic goods and the negative forces of globalization. In this project, examining these conflicts and the efforts made to resolve them, particular attention will be paid to dialogue and reconciliation. The key practice suggested is convivence: a symbiosis of interactive and interpenetrative approaches, based on intercultural and interreligious hermeneutical perspectives.

Book Inalienability of Land and Citizenship in the African Context

Download or read book Inalienability of Land and Citizenship in the African Context written by Simeon Onyewueke Eboh and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 2005 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Colonialism disrupted traditional authority over land and removed the spiritual linkage between the land and the people in exchange for simple material consideration. The colonial-received legal systems operating in Africa have no relevance to the socio-cultural make-up of the people as they lack communal sharing ethos and mechanisms for an equitable distribution of the communal wealth which are the foundations of justice, peace and harmonious co-existence. The study re-evaluates the meaning and values Africans attach to land and citizenship and their jural implications in order to provide workable compasses for the African peoples to navigate successfully through the labyrinthine jungles of globalisation."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Identity and Transformation

Download or read book Identity and Transformation written by David Wesley Ofumbi and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2012-02 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Ofumbi is convinced biblically that, Christian faith covers the entire realm of human existence. There is no dichotomy between private life and public life, or spiritual life and secular life, or an individual and a community. In fact, the whole of human life is the visible expression of the invisible God. Therefore, respective indigenous cultures and the gospel must engage and impact each other. On the one hand, Christians in respective indigenous cultures engage and adapt the gospel to the deep-level meaning and the surface-level forms of their cultures; on the other hand, the gospel transforms respective cultures continuously. African understanding and practices of Christian faith ("Africa Christianity") in this respect is both the outcome of the reciprocal impact between respective indigenous cultures and the gospel and the basis of authentic Christian response to human needs ("Christian Community Transformation"). In the first two chapters, he identifies and discusses briefly the challenges and hopes that characterize local communities in East Africa. He also defines and discusses the phrases "African Christianity" and "Christian Community Transformation". David particularly highlights that the impact of African understandings and practices of Christianity on "Christian Community Transformation" strive: (1) to instill self-confidence in native peoples by enabling them to recover and reassert their true human identities, to restore their true self-dignity, and to build just relationships; (2) to encourage the development and the use of local resources; (3) to bolster robust and enabling faith community structures and proactive responses compatible with the African Christian/ human ethos; and (4) to galvanize global relevance and impact. David Ofumbi is the team leader of Leadership Development Initiative Africa (Leadia), an indigenous leadership development ministry based in Kampala, Uganda. Leadia envisions a community of competent Christian leaders transforming ordinary people into effective followers of Christ courageously transforming Africa. He is currently pursuing post graduate studies focusing on the reciprocal influence between followership and leadership.

Download or read book Africa After the Cold War written by Adebayo Oyebade and published by Africa World Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although it is widely recognised that Africa's security problems are acute, it has never been a subject of much intellectual inquiry. This lack of scholarly discourse on the many dimensions of the problems of African security is the major consideration of this book. The approach to the questions of security differ markedly from the traditional approach that gives primacy to the threat of military aggression as sole factor in state security. A departure must be made from this dominant preoccupation in a new global order that has seen profound changes.

Book World Regional Geography

Download or read book World Regional Geography written by Lydia Mihelic Pulsipher and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2005-01-05 with total page 666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scale of [this book] encompasses vast continents and global forces, but often its descriptive focus on individual lives has the most impact. Stories of people and families make the study of geography compelling. Students begin to grasp the complex patterns at work in the world today as they see how people are affected by, and respond to, economic, social, and political processes. Through these stories of individual lives, [the authors] hope to convey the impact of globalization, a major theme of the text. To highlight global to local and interregional connections, the text includes a number of topics that have no borders: the war on terrorism, realignments in the global political order, interregional trade, the global economy, popular culture, the environment, and the Internet. Here, again, the focus on the individual person provides insight, offering local perspectives on these global trends.-Preface.
